Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gros Morne is the largest and most spectacular national park in eastern Canada-one of the best known parks yet one of the least visited. It is renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and for its unexpected landscapes: massive cliffs, fjords, alpine tundra, white sand beaches, and the golden Tablelands plateau. The geology, plants, and wildlife have drawn naturalists and researchers for decades, and the human story of the coast stretches back over 4,500 years. This guidebook reveals both the accessible park and its hidden treasures. It explores coast and forest, mountain and lowland, backcountry and frontcountry. An indispensable guide for planning a trip at any season, or a companion during a visit, it also describes services, campgrounds, trails, and other facilities.

Book The Killdevil Lodge Experience in Gros Morne National Park

Download or read book The Killdevil Lodge Experience in Gros Morne National Park written by Stewart Payne and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2019 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre, situated in the scenic Bonne Bay area of Lomond, Newfoundland and Labrador, in Gros Morne National Park. The twofold purpose of this book is to tell when and how the site was acquired in 1959 by the Diocese of Newfoundland and developed over those sixty years, and to hear first-hand the experiences of people who have spent time at Killdevil, particularly campers and staff. Thirty-five people have sent the author stories of their experiences. Some stories pay tribute to certain volunteers who gave many years of service directing camps and to making Killdevil what it is today. Bishop and Mrs. Robert Seaborn came to Newfoundland in 1958, Bishop Seaborn to be the assistant bishop in the Diocese of Newfoundland. They naturally brought with them their experiences and love of church camping and planted the same in what has become known as the Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre. In 1959 a large house known as Killdevil Lodge was purchased on a fourteen-acre site. Bowaters Pulp and Paper in Corner Brook deeded 30.6 acres of adjoining land to the developers. When Gros Morne National Park came to life in Bonne Bay forty years ago, Parks Canada expropriated the Killdevil property and paid out $200,000. From there on the property has been leased and has carried on church camps and conferences. In the beginning the focus was on church camps for children and young people, but almost immediately it expanded to include a conference centre. All the people who pass through the gate at Killdevil are visitors to Gros Morne National Park, which is important to Parks Canada. In addition to the thousands of people who have experienced Killdevil in one way or another, the organizers have had, during the author's time as Bishop of Western Newfoundland, three Boy Scout Jamborees, in 1987, 1991, and 1995. In 1987 there were more than 1,600 scouts and leaders on the site. This book shows through personal anecdotes, historical narrative, and photos the Killdevil experience from its beginnings to present day.

Book The Colony Of Unrequited Dreams

Download or read book The Colony Of Unrequited Dreams written by Wayne Johnston and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, a Canadian bestseller, is a novel about Newfoundland that centres on the story of Joe Smallwood, the true-life controversial political figure who ushered the island through confederation with Canada and became its first premier. Narrated from Smallwood's perspective, it voices a deep longing on the part of the Newfoundlander to do something significant, “commensurate with the greatness of the land itself.” Smallwood’s chronicle of his development from poor schoolboy to Father of the Confederation is a story full of epic journeys and thwarted loves, travelling from the ice floes of the seal hunt to New York City, in a style reminiscent at times of John Irving, Robertson Davies and Charles Dickens. Absorbing and entertaining, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams provides us with a deep perspective on the relationship between private lives and what comes to be understood as history and shows, as E. Annie Proulx commented, “Wayne Johnston is a brilliant and accomplished writer.” The New York Times said, “this prodigious, eventful, character-rich book is a noteworthy achievement: a biting, entertaining and inventive saga.... a brilliant and bravura literary performance.”

Book excerpt: For twelve generations, the inhabitants of a remote island in Newfoundland have lived and died together. Now, in the second decade of the 21st century, they are facing resettlement. They have each been offered a generous compensation package to leave the island for good. There’s just one proviso: everyone must go. Gradually, all of the residents surrender to the inevitable. All of the residents, that is, but one: old Moses Sweetland. Motivated in part by a sense of history and belonging, and concerned that his somewhat eccentric great-nephew will wilt on the mainland, Moses resists the coercion of family and friends in order to hold onto the only place he’s ever called home. As his options dwindle, Moses Sweetland concocts a scheme to remain the island’s only living resident. Cut off from the outside world, with the food supply diminishing and weather shredding away the last evidence of human habitation, Sweetland finds himself, finally, in the company of ghosts . . . Written with incomparable emotional power and depth, Sweetland is a story about loyalty and courage, about the human will to persist even when all hope seems lost.

Book excerpt: An adventure story from award-winning author Gary Collins: Newfoundland's Favourite Storyteller! "There is a feeling that comes to one who goes unafraid into the wilderness. For the very few who experience it comes a sense of belonging; of being a fragile part of the mysterious whole; of profound peace; of wanting never to leave," says Gary Collins in describing the inspiration that overtook him when he penned the final pages in this, the biography of Mattie Mitchell, a hunter, trapper, and guide of Mi'kmaq descent whose daring feats became known worldwide, but which history books somehow forgot. In researching the life and times of Mattie Mitchell, critically acclaimed author Gary Collins (author of the award-winning What Colour is the Ocean?) gleaned much insight on his subject from the diary and other personal papers of Marie Sparkes, granddaughter to the remarkable Mi'kmaq woodsman. Now, for the first time, Mattie Mitchell's legendary deeds are revealed in full, comprehensive detail. In 1998, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador recognized Mattie Mitchell's contribution to the growth and prosperity of the province by opening its Mattie Mitchell Prospectors Resource Room. In 2001, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada recognized Mattie Mitchell as a person of national historic significance. In 2005, a plaque in Mattie Mitchell's honour was placed in Gros Morne National Park.
