Book Geometry of Grief

Download or read book Geometry of Grief written by Michael Frame and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-05-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This engaging short book is both a mathematician's reflections on grief and a mathematically-informed theory of grieving. Michael Frame retired in 2016 as a professor of mathematics at Yale University, where students fought for a place in his course on fractal geometry. Students appreciated his use of accessible examples- decalcomania paintings and illustrations of cats to explain mathematical concepts-and stories of his work and friendship with the founder of fractal geometry, Benoit Mandelbrot. In this book, he continues his work to make mathematics accessible, using his experiences with grief to give uninitiated readers insights into advanced topics in geometry. The inability to repeat an "aha moment", when you first learn something, is one type of grief that Frame examines. He connects this irreversible loss of perspective to more consequential grief-loss of a career or of a loved one-and explains ways he has thought mathematically about grieving and coping with grief. Frame is an authentic and sympathetic voice. He retired after discovering that he had an inoperable brain tumor and feeling the effects of his cancer on his teaching career. His connections and insights make this a timely and moving book in our time of personal and collective grief"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leader in the fields of animal ethics and neurology, Dr. Aysha Akhtar examines the rich human-animal connection and how interspecies empathy enriches our well-being. Deftly combining medicine, social history and personal experience, Our Symphony with Animals is the first book by a physician to show that humans and animals have a shared destiny—our well-being is deeply entwined. Dr. Akhtar reveals how empathy for animals is the next step in our species’ moral evolution and a vital component of human health. When we include animals in our circle of empathy, we not only liberate animals, we also liberate ourselves. Drawing on the accounts of a varied cast of characters—a former mobster, a pediatrician, an industrial chicken farmer, a serial killer, and a deer hunter—to reveal what happens when we both break and forge bonds with animals. Interwoven is Dr. Akhtar’s own story, an immigrant who was bullied in school and abused by her uncle. Feeling abandoned by humanity, it was only when she met Sylvester, a dog who had also been abused, that she find the strength to sound the alarm for them both. Humans are neurologically designed to empathize with animals. Violence against animals goes against our nature. In equal measure, the love we give to animals biologically reverberates back to us. Our Symphony with Animals is the definitive account for why our relationships with animals matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gift of a Father gives specific things that my father, Leonard James, Jr. did throughout my life that were truly gifts and blessings to me. He did these things by way of example, teaching and mentoring that have been real blessings over the entire seventy-five plus years of my existence. Key points in his teachings are: 1. The sovereignty of God emphasizes that everything that man uses in technology and commerce was created by God. We can do nothing apart from our Creator whether we acknowledge Him or not. 2. My father set forth God’s model for manhood by his example and teaching. He emphasized that God set forth the model or pattern in the first two chapters of Genesis. 3. He established that my identity must be set by Godly principles and not by the thinking and behavior of the people and culture around me. 4. He stressed the importance of having a vision for life and to avoid wandering aimlessly. 5. As I entered puberty he impressed upon me the importance of commitment in marriage and a relationship with a female. This means there is more that just sex involved. He set the example in that he was married to my mother for 59 years before his death. 6. Life is filled with traps and snares. He taught me to be careful when dealing with temptations and “bait”. 7. Racism was a major issue while I was growing up in Mississippi in the 1950s and 1960s. He and my mother emphasized that my success was possible and I had to assume responsibility for it. 8. He raised me and my sisters to look to God’s unconditional love and His Grace even though we made mistakes.
