Download or read book Greenie S Path written by Greenie and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-10-26 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenies Path: The Search for Christopher Hiltaychuk presents a unique look at an adopted childs life told from the childs perspective. It is also a testament to the people who chose to take the challenge of raising anothers child as their own and loving that child as much as any birth parent could, if not more. Author Greenie is grateful for the loving care that his adoptive parents gave him, but he is also naturally very curious about the people who gave him up for adoption. Greenie is intrigued by the knowledge that there are people in this world with the same genetic history as hispeople with whom he shares an unspoken bond. He describes his life, thoughts, and feelings for his birth parents, the people who felt their own world and circumstances were not ideal for raising a child at that time. He considers whether they ever wondered what happened to one of their own, one of their brothers, uncles, or grandchildren. Greenies Path is the true story of the path his life has takenthe man he has become. No matter what paths lay ahead, Greenies Path captures that need for a sense of belonging to a family is such an integral foundation to their success in the world.

Book excerpt: In the Royal Navy vernacular, the term 'greenie' describes the officers and ratings responsible for the electrical engineering functions of the fleet. Electrical engineering has 'driven' the Royal Navy for far longer than one might imagine, from solving the problem of magnetic interference with the compass by the ironclad early in the 20th century onward. Author Commander Moore traces the development of technology from 1850 to today's integrated micro computers that control almost every aspect of navigation, intel, and strike capacity. At the same time, he describes how the Navy's structure and manpower changed to accommodate the new technologies, changes often accelerated in wartime, particularly in World War II. Without the full cooperation of naval establishments and organisations and various public and private museums and manufacturers, this work would have been impossible to produce. Written in an anecdotal, narrative style but with a complete mastery of the science itself, it will appeal not only to those interested in the history of the Royal Navy but also those many thousands, past and present, who can claim the honour of calling themselves one of the Greenies.

Lilli, an Auschwitz survivor, has also been orphaned and is waiting patiently for a new life in Canada. Dreaming of a place where food doesn’t have to be secretly hoarded, where dogs are friendly and people don’t treat you like cattle, the two teens—like all teens—just want to fit in. But Canadians turn out to be strange and perplexing people. Haunted by their past, Danny and Lilli fear they will always remain outsiders. The Greenies is an inspiring novel based on the real-life experiences of those “green” newcomers, a group of over 1,000 orphaned Jewish teens who, with the help of the Canadian Jewish Congress, immigrated to Canada after World War II.

Book excerpt: SCIENCE / FANTASY set in the far future's distant past...with a thread of ROMANCE running throughout: Three planets doomed to extinction, and only a handful of heroes are equipped to save them from time paradoxes and nasty aliens. WEBS OF PARADOX is a complete story-arc, HIGH ACTION / ADVENTURE you will find difficult to put down. Amazon Reviews on Part One [previously published as Reins of Time]: - The world is complete, and the characters vivid. Obviously, a lot of effort was put into making this world work, and the mesh of the two worlds blends completely. The action is nonstop as the characters are tumbled from one precarious situation to another, and the ending comes together nicely. This was an enjoyable read, well worth the greater story depth and thoughts required to follow the story. TiggerKat

Book MATT ARCHER OMNIBUS

Download or read book MATT ARCHER OMNIBUS written by Kendra C. Highley and published by Kendra C. Highley. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MATT ARCHER SERIES Omnibus includes Matt Archer: Monster Hunter (MA1), Matt Archer: Monster Summer (Novella, MA1.5), Matt Archer: Blade's Edge (MA2), and Matt Archer: Legend (MA3), along with exclusive, brand new short stories, and interviews with the author and characters. About the MATT ARCHER series: Monster Hunter (Matt Archer #1) Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park. Monsters are real. And living in his backyard. But that's not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle's bag has a secret, one that will change Matt's life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it's chosen Matt as its wielder. Now Matt's part of a world he didn't know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries. His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date? Blade’s Edge (Matt Archer #2) When Matt Archer was fourteen, he discovered monsters are real. As if that wasn’t enough to go on for a few decades, Matt also found out that he’d been chosen to hunt those monsters--with a sentient, supernatural knife. Now fifteen, Matt has spent the last year working with a clandestine military unit, trying to rid the world of monsters, demons and other vicious creatures, all while keeping it a secret from nearly everyone he knows back home in Billings. Including his mom. Add in a new girlfriend, family secrets, sibling drama and enough homework to sink an aircraft carrier, and Matt’s life has become more complicated than he ever imagined. Worse, the knife-spirit has developed some very definite opinions about Matt’s personal life and it interferes in his business whenever it wants. More and more, Matt’s coming to realize that sharing brain-space with a spirit kind of sucks. When stories of decimated towns and hordes of zombies start pouring into the Pentagon from Afghanistan, Matt knows he’ll be called up soon. Between the new mission and the knife’s increasing control over his mind, Matt wonders if he’ll survive long enough to take his driver’s exam. Legend (Matt Archer #3) When Matt Archer was fourteen, he was chosen—by a magic, spirit-inhabited knife—to hunt monsters with a special paranormal division of the Army. When he was fifteen, he was thrown into a global war the rest of the world didn’t know existed. Now Matt’s sixteen and the war has cost him more than he ever thought it would. He’s also learned that the knife-spirits have an agenda he doesn’t totally agree with. The only problem? The spirits have the upper hand, and they plan to control the fight—and Matt. Then things get worse: the next lunar eclipse cycle is starting, a prominent physicist has gone missing, and Matt’s best friend is thinking about quitting the team. If he loses Will—after everyone else he’s lost—Matt’s not sure how he’ll fight alone. As the source of his nightmares starts to creep out of the shadows, Matt knows he’ll need all the help he can get…because being alone could prove deadly.

Book Moving the Chains

Download or read book Moving the Chains written by Erin Grayson Sapp and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2022-11-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We remember the 1966 birth of the New Orleans Saints as a shady quid pro quo between the NFL commissioner and a Louisiana congressman. Moving the Chains is the untold story of the athlete protest that necessitated this backroom deal, as New Orleans scrambled to respond to a very public repudiation of the racist policies that governed the city. In the decade that preceded the 1965 athlete walkout, a reactionary backlash had swept through Louisiana, bringing with it a host of new segregation laws and enough social strong-arming to quash any complaints, even from suffering sports promoters. Nationwide protests had assailed the Tulane Green Wave, the Sugar Bowl, and the AFL’s preseason stop-offs, and only legal loopholes and a lot of luck kept football alive in the city. Still, live it did, and in January 1965, locals believed they were just a week away from landing their own pro franchise. All they had to do was pack Tulane Stadium for the city’s biggest audition yet, the AFL All-Star game. Ultimately, all fifty-eight Black and white teammates walked out of the game to protest the town’s lingering segregation practices and public abuse of Black players. Following that, love of the gridiron prompted and excused something out of sync with the city’s branding: change. In less than two years, the Big Easy made enough progress to pass a blitz inspection by Black and white NFL officials and receive the long-desired expansion team. The story of the athletes whose bravery led to change quickly fell by the wayside. Locals framed desegregation efforts as proof that the town had been progressive and tolerant all along. Furthermore, when a handshake between Pete Rozelle and Hale Boggs gave America its first Super Bowl and New Orleans its own club, the city proudly clung to that version of events, never admitting the cleanup even took place. As a result, Moving the Chains is the first book to reveal the ramifications of the All-Stars’ civil resistance and to detail the Saints’ true first win.

Book excerpt: What If? What if a very long time ago there existed on this Earth a species as intelligent as Homo sapiens and maybe more intelligent? What if this ancient creature ruled the entire planet and half the solar system? What if this creature's civilization rose and fell and disappeared into the mists of Time? What if evidence of this lost world remained buried for tens of millions of years? What if – one day – a modern human paleontologist looking for fossilized bones finds an artifact instead? What if this artifact turns up at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, the dividing line between the Age of Mammals and the Age of Reptiles? What if this thing reemerges into the sunlight after being buried for sixty-five million years? It was madness even to contemplate that this man-made thing – no, this dinosaur-made thing – could exist. It was mad, crazy, insane, impossible. But there it was. Day of the Dragon tells this incredible tale....
