Book Public Transportation s Role in Responding to Climate Change

Download or read book Public Transportation s Role in Responding to Climate Change written by Tina Hodges and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fed. Transit Admin. (FTA) collects and analyzes data from across the country on public transportation (PT) fuel use, vehicles deployed, rides taken, etc. These data provides valuable insight into the impacts of auto, truck, SUV, and PT travel on the production of greenhouse gas emissions. There are significant greenhouse gas emission savings by using PT. This paper presents an analysis of the data and frames it in a broader context. It concludes with a description of FTA actions that address climate change. PT can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by: Providing a low emissions alternative to driving; Facilitating compact land use, reducing the need to travel long distances; and Minimizing the carbon footprint of transit oper.

Book Urban Form Transportation and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Download or read book Urban Form Transportation and Greenhouse Gas Emissions written by Irmeli Harmaajärvi and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban sprawl has continued to spread in the Nordic countries over the past few decades, increasing the amount of transportation and transport-related greenhouse gas emissions. Urban planners need to take measures to reduce these ecological effects. Accessible, functional public transportation and high-quality cycling and walking networks will help reduce greenhouse gases, improve air quality and traffic safety, and create a more livable urban environment. We can further control the development of urban form and transportation systems through urban design, certain types of taxation, financing of urban infrastructure, traffic pricing, and parking policies. Planning alone cannot stop the urban sprawl. When considering and assessing different measures on a national level, we need to seriously consider legislative and fiscal issues, citizen participation, and other background forces. We need cooperation between researchers, politicians, civil servants, and citizens to better understand the economic, social, and environmental long-term effects of decisions concerning urban development, and we need a continuing discussion of urban-form problems in the Nordic countries to develop national solutions. This publication explores these issues.

Book excerpt: The report and the TravelMatters website (developed as part of this project) are designed to present information on climate change and to examine how greenhouse gas emissions from transportation may be reduced. Both the print and web-based research products review the capacity of public transportation to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and present this information in a format accessible to transportation professionals and the general public. Key strategies for reducing transportation emissions--increasing the use of transit, changing land-use patterns, and adopting energy-efficient technologies and fuels in transit fleets--are discussed.

Book Moving Cooler

Download or read book Moving Cooler written by Cambridge Systematics and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Both the public and private sectors are grappling with decisions regarding policies that will lead to reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Moving Cooler analyzes and assesses the effectiveness and costs of almost 50 transportation strategies for reducing GHG emissions, as well as evaluates combinations of those strategies. The findings of this study can help decision makers coordinate and shape effective approaches to reducing GHG emissions at all levels - national, regional, and local - while also meeting broader transportation objectives." --Book Jacket.

Book Decarbonising Urban Mobility with Land Use and Transport Policies The Case of Auckland New Zealand

Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing global society. The debate over what to do is confounded by the uncertain relationship between increasing greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and the impact of those changes on nature and human civilization. Driving Climate Change will provide professionals and students alike with the latest information regarding greenhouse emissions while presenting the most up-to-date techniques for reducing these emissions. It will investigate three broad strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions: 1) reducing motorized travel, 2) shifting to less energy intensive modes, and 3) changing fuel and propulsion technologies. Findings will be presented by the leaders in the field with contributions from professors, researchers, consultants and engineers at the most prominent institutions - commercial, academic and federal - dealing with environmental research and policy. Includes a comprehensive evaluation of current industrial practice Provides technologically sound and manageable techniques for engineers, scientists and designers Incorporates guidelines for a sustainable future

Book Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Urban Travel

Download or read book Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Urban Travel written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study develops a model of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from personal urban transportation given variations in neighbourhood characteristics, including comunity and housing design, socioeconomic make-up, and locational factors. The results provide valuable insight into how communities can be designed and planned to reduce GHG emissions from passenger travel in urban areas. The main purpose of the study is to develop a user-friendly spreadsheet tool to make the mathematical model easy to use in evaluating development proposals in terms of GHG emissions. The user inputs data on the characteristics of the neighbourhood and the tool forecasts the annual per household GHG emissions from transportation. In this study, the results supplied by the tool are used in discussing the sustainability of nine neighbourhood scenarios that embody a wide range of contrasting locational and neighbourhood design characterstics.

Book Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Measures in Urban Transport of Mekelle City

Download or read book Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Measures in Urban Transport of Mekelle City written by Tewelde Gebre and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: Excellent, course: Urban Environment and Climate Change Management, language: English, abstract: Urban transport is one of the necessities that cities require to perform their day-to-day activities. At the same time, it is also the major treat to global climate change. Transport sector has emitted more than 7200 billion tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This study therefore intends to assess the greenhouse gas emission reduction measures in urban transport of Mekelle city. It employs a descriptive research with qualitative and quantitative research approaches and survey research strategy. Data for the study were collected from primary and secondary data sources. Questionnaire, interview, and observation were used to gather primary data from owners of private automobiles and transport office, whereas, archives were used to gather secondary data. These data were analyzed through qualitative (narrative analysis) and quantitative (descriptive and statistical analysis) methods. Tables, charts, graphs and plates are used to present the data. This study finds that Atoz and Yaris car models; and Hyundai and Daihatsu motors emit lesser amount of carbon dioxide, while Land cruiser and WllB car models; and Mercedes Benz and Suzuki motors emit more. The average emission level of private automobiles in Mekelle city is found to be 209.93grams of CO2/km with an average fuel efficiency of 12.115km/liter. The number of motor vehicles in Mekelle city is increasing with an average annual growth rate of 17.34% for the last ten years. The growth rate is highest for Code 5 cars and is lowest for code 2 cars. Most of the cars in the city are below five years of service. The current share of motorized vehicles in urban transport of Mekelle city is 33.44% and the vehicle ownership rate of the city is 35.6 vehicles/1000 people, which is above the national average. Rapid urban population growth, inte
