Download or read book A Dictionary of American Proverbs written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 1348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have a gift for coining proverbs. "A picture is worth a thousand words" was not, as you might imagine, the product of ancient Chinese wisdom -- it was actually minted by advertising executive Fred Barnard in a 1921 advertisement for Printer's Ink magazine. After all, Americans are first and foremost a practical people and proverbs can be loosely defined as pithy statements that are generally accepted as true and useful. The next logical step would be to gather all of this wisdom together for a truly American celebration of shrewd advice.A Dictionary of American Proverbs is the first major collection of proverbs in the English language based on oral sources rather than written ones. Listed alphabetically according to their most significant key word, it features over 15,000 entries including uniquely American proverbs that have never before been recorded, as well as thousands of traditional proverbs that have found their way into American speech from classical, biblical, British, continental European, and American literature. Based on the fieldwork conducted over thirty years by the American Dialect Society, this volume is complete with historical references to the earliest written sources, and supplies variants and recorded geographical distribution after each proverb. Many surprised await the reader in this vast treasure trove of wit and wisdom. Collected here are nuggets of popular wisdom on all aspects of American life: weather, agriculture, travel, money, business, food, neighbors, friends, manners, government, politics, law, health, education, religion, music, song, and dance. And, to further enhance browsing pleasure, the editors have provided a detailed guide to the use of the work. While it's true that many of our best known proverbs have been supplied by the ever-present "Anonymous," many more can be attributed to some very famous Americans, like Ernest Hemingway, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, J. Pierpont Morgan, Thomas Alva Edison, Abigail Adams, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, to name but a few offered in this fascinating collection.Who wouldn't want to know the origin of "the opera ain't over till the fat lady sings?" This uniquely American proverb and many more are gathered together in A Dictionary of American Proverbs. A great resource for students and scholars of literature, psychology, folklore, linguistics, anthropology, and cultural history, this endlessly intriguing volume is also a delightful companion for anyone with an interest in American culture.
Download or read book The Red and the Green written by Iris Murdoch and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel about a troubled Irish family on the eve of the Easter Rising by a Man Booker Prize–winning author. In 1916, with the First World War raging across Europe, Andrew Chase-White, lieutenant in the British army, travels to Ireland to see his family. Though he was raised in England by Protestant parents, many of his relations still live on the Emerald Isle, and are Catholic and nationalist through and through. Andrew’s arrival in Dublin is the only spark needed to ignite old resentments, new passions, political tensions, and religious crises, sending the family into a torrent of fights and alliances, affairs and betrayals. And as the historic gunfire begins at the General Post Office on the day of the Easter Rebellion, the lives of Andrew and his relations will be indelibly changed. At once an exploration of the tumultuous political landscape of World War I Dublin and an examination of family, love, and loyalty, The Red and the Green is a compelling novel of Englishness and Irishness that continues to stand the test of time and history.

Book excerpt: On Easter Monday, between 1,000 and 1,500 Irish Volunteers and members of the Irish Citizen Army seized the General Post Office and other key locations in Dublin. The intention of their leaders, including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, was to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent thirty-two county Irish republic. For a week battle raged in the Irish capital until the Rising collapsed. The rebel leaders were executed soon afterwards, though in death their ideals quickly triumphed.lluminating every aspect of that fateful Easter week, The Easter Rising is based on an impressive range of original sources. It has been fully revised, expanded and updated in the light of a wealth of new material and extensive use has been made of almost 2,000 witness statements that the Bureau of Military History in Dublin gathered from participants in the Rising. The result is a vivid depiction of the personalities and actions not just of the leaders on both sides but the rank and file and civilians as well. The book brings the reader closer to the events of 1916 than has previously been possible and provides an exceptional account of a city at war.

A gentleman with a backpack and a long beard came up and sat down next to me and began to talk. The first bus passed and the second. Download or read book Once Upon a Clearing written by BERNICE BERGER MILLER and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once there was a Clearing. It was several acres of green grass ringed by an umbrella of lush trees with fat bushes at their roots. At one point in time the clearing sat uninhabited. And then it wasnt. Small cabins emerged and a few people appeared and occupied them. Louis Johnson, a mountain of a man, gently led his petite wife, Lily, and their two children into Berthas cabin. As a youth, he had assumed the role of protecting his mother and little sister from his violent father. Without any formal anointment he was the designated leader of the small community. Ethan and Emily were the parents of three boys, two of whom were twins that were born in the flat bed of a wagon. And with Doc, Bertha, and her son young son Peter, the community was created in the clearing. In the encircling woods, Kate had stumbled on a thick root that snaked along the ground. Peter, searching for rabbits, saw her and dragged her to his cabin where Bertha stood on their unpainted porch. She carried Kate to her big bed that stood in the corner of the cabins main room. Peter summoned Doc who occupied another small cabin. Doc announced that Kate had broken her hip. The community, now twelve including the children, gathered at Berthas to see the broken hip. They had not seen one before. Their way of life was nearly independent of the bustling controlling world from which they all had come. Their world was pristine. Louis and Lily, along with their daughter, Venus, awakened the soft slumber of their community with a decision they made. Will the Clearing still remain green with an arch of a rainbow protecting it?

Download or read book Epic Eggs written by Jennifer Sartell and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This isn't a typical egg cookbook or guide to raising chickens, Epic Eggs takes a deep dive on the eggs themselves and tells you how to raise birds that will produce the best eggs you've ever seen. It may be true that most poultry found on small homesteads or in backyards especially are viewed as pets, but they are inarguably pets with benefits--namely eggs. In Epic Eggs, homesteader and writer Jennifer Sartell looks at the eggs of the most common types of poultry you’d find in your backyard: chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guineas, and quail. Don’t jump to conclusions! This isn’t an egg cookbook or a guide to raising poultry. Jennifer delves into the eggs themselves and explains reproductive systems, egg anatomy, and how and why different colors are distributed to egg shells. Jennifer will show you a variety breeds of birds, and what sizes, shapes, and even colors of egg they produce; from white to blue, brown, chocolate, olive, and speckled, plus heritage breeds and how to breed for specific colors. Illustrated with fantastic color photography of eggs and their birds, Epic Eggs goes on to address how to optimize living conditionsand diet for the healthiest and most-flavorful eggs, the process of grading and storing eggs, and the eternal washing debate. There’s also discussion of nutrition, baking, cooking, preserving, pickling, and dehydrating. The book ends with advice for homesteaders looking to create business plans and a section on troubleshooting.
