Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study is not strictly prosopographical or a socially aristocratic account of historiography depicting the lives of three selected individuals; it is an attempt to portray the way that these three individuals blended their resources and socio-economic standings with their involvement in communal affairs to benefit the Greek community and enhance the image of Hellenism in the mainstream society. The three Australian Greek voices appearing in this volume could be treated as a sample pattern; they are all unique cases of settlers with advanced civic conscience, who acquire national and international reputation dedicating their charisma to the common cause."-- Introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's introduction is clear about where culturally diverse women stand in the 2020s: 'while we have made some meaningful inroads towards equality, we are nowhere near enough to where we need to be.' Such women face the glass ceiling of their gender, and a cultural ceiling as well. It assembles the voices of over 40 women from many walks of life, many of them high achievers, who detail the difficulties and the triumphs they have met within their lives. Their stories, strength and resilience inspire. Her Voice arose from the Food for Thought network, founded 20 years ago in Melbourne, made up of Greek Australian women originally, but quickly drawing in other migrant women and daughters of migrants through friendship, love and the recognition of how much they had in common. ----------------------- "...a beautiful book! it's such a triumph - the content, the design, the intent." - Maggie Hamilton, Sydney "...A monumental book, a gift not only to Greek women but to multicultural Australia, a historical reference point for future generations ... it should be read by all men and women ... Touching, and inspiring" - Bill Papastergiadis OAM, Melbourne "...Narrated with an authentic voice, this book is a treasure trove of life journeys." - Zografina Kopanidis, Melbourne "Varvara's story and her book is beautiful and inspiring, a true display of intelligence, determination and empowerment ... These small windows into other womens choices reminds me how important relatable role models and mentors are for our girls." - Dora Kordakis, Melbourne "I couldn't put the book down because literally and metaphorically I heard their voices. I cried. I giggled. I rejoiced. I connected with all of them. A brilliant book of historic importance." - Maria Makris, Melbourne "Many thanks to Varvara for introducing me to so many wonderful and inspirational women. In particular, I found the key events that shaped and assisted each woman in her journey, to be very interesting! There is certainly valuable advice for younger women who read "Her Voice: Greek Women and their friends". - Sandra Keown "...Amazing book ... a valuable resource for anyone who seeks to understand the role of women within our community and beyond and Varvara Ioannou deserves our heartfelt gratitude ... she is a national treasure ... many of the achievements of women are glossed over, effaced or obscured. This volume allows Greek women of all ages and others connected to our community to speak for themselves. What they choose to say about themselves and their worldview is significant." - Dean Kalimniou, Melbourne "It is a wonderful book with a lot to offer and Varvara should be very proud of having brought it all to us women from all backgrounds but especially for women of Greek origin." - Marina Marangos, Brisbane

Book Australian Voices

Download or read book Australian Voices written by Ray Willbanks and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Australian fiction is attracting a world audience, particularly in the United States, where a growing readership eagerly awaits new works. In Australian Voices, Ray Willbanks goes beyond the books to their authors, using sixteen interviews to reveal the state of fiction writing in Australia—what nags from the past, what engages the imagination for the future. Willbanks engages the writers in lively discussions of their own work, as well as topics of collective interest such as the past, including convict times; the nature of the land; the treatment of Aborigines; national identity and national flaws; Australian-British antipathy; sexuality and feminism; drama and film; writing, publishing, and criticism in Australia; and the continuous and pervasive influence of the United States on Australia. The interviews in Australian Voices are gossipy, often funny, and always informative, as Willbanks builds a structured conversation that reveals biography, personality, and significant insight into the works of each writer. They will be important for both scholars and the reading public.

Book Reading Greek Australian Literature through the Paramythi

Download or read book Reading Greek Australian Literature through the Paramythi written by Anna Dimitriou and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comparative textual analysis of a body of relatively neglected works by Greek Australian writers Dimitris Tsaloumas, Antigone Kefala, Stylianos Charkianakis, Dean Kalimnios, Christos Tsiolkas, Fotini Epanomitis and Helen Koukoutsis. The focus is on reading their texts as a bridge between multiculturalism and world literature given each writer identifies in various ways with peripheral cosmopolitanism as they merge high-brow literary forms with the quotidian paramythi, or the storytelling oral tradition. The different ways they do this registers the writers’ ambivalent relationship with their origins through their transculturally mediated expression. Discovering new possibilities in literary texts which have oral traces becomes a productive way to look at the question of translatability as posed by scholars of multiculturalism and world literature, such as Sneja Gunew, Emily Apter and Pheng Cheah.

Book The Transnational Voices of Australia s Migrant and Minority Press

Download or read book The Transnational Voices of Australia s Migrant and Minority Press written by Catherine Dewhirst and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection invites the reader to enter the diverse worlds of Australia’s migrant and minority communities through the latest research on the contemporary printed press, spanning the mid-nineteenth century to our current day. With a focus on the rare, radical and foreign-language print culture of multiple and frequently concurrent minority groups’ newspaper ventures, this volume has two overarching aims: firstly to demonstrate how the local experiences and narratives of such communities are always forged and negotiated within a context of globalising forces – the global within the local; and secondly to enrich an understanding of the complexity of Australian ‘voices’ through this medium not only as a means for appreciating how the cultural heritage of such communities were sustained, but also for exploring their contributions to the wider society.

Book Memory and Migration in the Shadow of War

Download or read book Memory and Migration in the Shadow of War written by Joy Damousi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an engaging and original contribution to the field of memory studies, Joy Damousi considers the enduring impact of war on family memory in the Greek diaspora. Focusing on Australia's Greek immigrants in the aftermath of the Second World War and the Greek Civil War, the book explores the concept of remembrance within the larger context of migration to show how intergenerational experience of war and trauma transcend both place and nation. Drawing from the most recent research in memory, trauma and transnationalism, Memory and Migration in the Shadow of War deals with the continuities and discontinuities of war stories, assimilation in modern Australia, politics and activism, child migration and memories of mothers and children in war. Damousi sheds new light on aspects of forgotten memory and silence within families and communities, and in particular the ways in which past experience of violence and tragedy is both negotiated and processed.

Book Antigone Kefala

Download or read book Antigone Kefala written by Elizabeth McMahon and published by UWA Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antigone Kefala is one of the most significant of the Australian writers who have come from elsewhere; it would be difficult to overstate the significance of her life and work in the culture of this nation. Over the last half-century, her poetry and prose have reshaped and expanded Australian literature and prompted us to re-examine its premises and capacities. From the force of her poetic imagery and the cadences of her phrases and her sentences to the large philosophical and historical questions she poses and to which she responds, Kefala has generated in her writing new ways of living in time, place and language. Across six collections of poetry and five prose works, themselves comprising fiction, non-fiction, essays and diaries, she has mapped the experience of exile and alienation alongside the creativity of a relentless reconstitution of self. Kefala is also a cultural visionary. From her rapturous account of Sydney as the place of her arrival in 1959, to her role in developing diverse writing cultures at the Australia Council, to the account of her own writing life amongst a community of friends and artists in Sydney Journals (2008), she has reimagined the ways we live and write in Australia.
