Book excerpt: This exciting new work collects together for the first time the evidence for hoards, buried treasure and other finds of numismatic material from the Americas. An inventory enumerates approximately 900 coin finds, chiefly from the United States, but also from Canada and most other countries in the Americas. This is supplemented with a listing of 150 finds of American coins outside the Americas. Each entry contains the find spot, date of discovery, date of deposit, detailed description of the contents, and a bibliography. The inventory exploits the numismatic, shipwreck, and archaeological literatures, newspapers, and law reports of treasure trove cases more thoroughly than has ever been done before.

The period covered by this catalogue is from the reign of Anastasius I (491518) until the capture of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453. When this catalogue was first published in 1974 it was hailed as containing more information in a concise form than any other single volume on the Byzantine series.

Book excerpt: Of the many traditions we have inherited from the ancient Greeks, the use of coins should rank as one of the most important. From its first appearance in the region of Lydia (western Turkey) in the late-17th century BC, coinage gradually spread throughout the Greek world, and the history of the ancient Greeks is reflected in its evolution. Designs on Greek coins include the badges of city-states, portraits of rulers, images of Greek gods, scenes from myths and objects of daily life, and are often works of art in themselves. The dies, carved by craftsmen, sometimes bear the name or initials of the mint official responsible for their issue, and the coins might have circulated in trade, been used as gifts or dedications, or hoarded as valuables.
Download or read book Greek Roman and Byzantine coins in the Museum at Amasya Ancient Amaseia Turkey written by S. Ireland and published by British Institute at Ankara. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich numismatic collections of Turkish provincial museums are still relatively unknown and this volume presents for the first time the coinage in the museum of Amasya, which, under its ancient name of Amaseia, was one of the major centres of north-east Anatolia. In the Hellenistic period it was capital of the powerful kingdom of Pontus, while under the Roman empire it boasted the title of `Metropolis and First City' of its province. Over 4,500 coins held in the museum are catalogued, ranging in date from the 5th century BC until the 11th century AD. Most are finds from the surrounding region, so that there are rich holdings from the mints of Amaseia, Amisus, Sinope and Cappadcian Caesarea; but over 50 other mints in Asia Minor are represented and some coins come from as far afield as Alexandria in Egypt and Arles in Gaul.

Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the Byzantine series amongst coin collectors is a recent phenomenon which prompts enquiry into what may have brought it about. Undoubtedly there is an element of investment value as coins can be both works of art and antiques which, under modern conditions it seems, often prove more attractive to investors--great and small--than market stocks and shares. The Byzantine series provides a prolific gold coinage with many rarities and some outstanding works of art, although little so obviously attractive to the investor or art collector as the Greek or even the Roman Imperial and English Hammered series have done. -- Pg. 11.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue is unique in providing the collector with the only comprehensive and authoritative guide devoted specifically to the local coinages of the Roman Empire, undoubtedly the most neglected series in the whole of ancient classical numismatics. Greek Imperial coins span more than three centuries from Augustus to Diocletian, and were issued at over six hundred mints from Spain to Mesopotamia.

Book excerpt: This book covers coins of the Eastern Roman Empire from Anastasius I (491518) to Constantine XI (14481453) with an overview of the period of Diocletian in 284 to the succession of Anastasius I as an introduction to the coinage. It is not intended to be a scholarly book but rather a quick reference for coin identification. It does not cover the holdover aureusfrom the Western Empire, coins from the collateral areas of the ArabByzantine, or the coins of the Turks and other successors who produced coins of similar design. It also does not cover forgeries. Caveat Emptor.

Book excerpt: All but 9 of the 6,449 Islamic coins found at Athenian Agora up to the date when this book was written belong to the Ottoman period. The earliest datable Ottoman coin is from the reign of Mehmed I (1413-21). Most of the coins come from overseas mints such as those of Istanbul, Cairo, Macedonia, Serbia, and Bosnia. Although the name of Athens cannot be read on any coin, the author thinks that many of the crude coppers of the 15th to 16th centuries A.D. were locally struck.
