Book Greek Moulds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Moulds Classic Reprint written by Campbell Cowan Edgar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Moulds S 2. The general way in which the moulds were made can be easily inferred. Let us take the simplest case, a mould of two parts only, such as n 3 2 02 o (pls. IV and XXIX). A coat of plaster, more or less liquid, was first applied to one side of the model. The edge of this coat was made clean and smooth, and notches were cut at intervals round the outer side of it. The first half of the mould having been allowed to harden (and remaining or being once more attached to the model), the other side of the model was then enveloped in a similar coat of slip. The second half of the mould would thus receive an equally clean edge, with projections fittings into the notches of the first half. At one end of the mould an opening was either left or made, and this orifice, it may be observed, is always halved between the two sections. Bringing together an international cast of contributors from Greece, Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany, and the United States, the volume incorporates new areas of research, such as the sculptures of Messene and Macedonia, sculpture in Roman Greece, and the contribution of Greek sculptors in Rome, as well as important aspects of Greek sculpture like techniques and patronage. The written sources (literary and epigraphical) are explored in dedicated chapters, as are function and iconography and the reception of Greek sculpture in modern Europe. Inspired by recent exhibitions on Lysippos and Praxiteles, the book also revisits the style and the personal contributions of the great masters.

Book Hellenistic Pottery and Terracottas

Download or read book Hellenistic Pottery and Terracottas written by Homer A. Thompson and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles collected and reprinted here appeared originally in the pages of Hesperia. "Two Centuries of Hellenistic Pottery," by Homer A. Thompson, presented in 1934 some of the pottery found in the early excavations of the American School in the Athenian Agora. The series titled "Three Centuries of Hellenistic Terracottas," by Dorothy B. Thompson, includes ten articles that were published between 1952 and 1966. The working chronology that the authors established has made these studies basic references for investigations of Attic pottery and terracottas of the Hellenistic period, wherever found. In recognition of subsequent discoveries, the Thompsons' work has now been augmented by a preface with bibliography for each, prepared by Susan I. Rotroff, which comments particularly on the changes in chronology resulting from the continuing excavations in the Agora and elsewhere. In "Afterthoughts" Dorothy Thompson has made new observations concerning certain terracottas.

Presented here is the small collection of molds and figurines from southern Italy now in the possession of the Getty Museum, with an expert discussion focusing on the original form and function of the figures.

Book Archaeology History and Science

Download or read book Archaeology History and Science written by Marcos Martinon-Torres and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a combination of historical, archaeological, and scientific data is not an uncommon research practice. Rarely found, however, is a more overt critical consideration of how these sources of information relate to each other, or explicit attempts at developing successful strategies for interdisciplinary work. The authors in this volume provide such critical perspectives, examining materials from a wide range of cultures and time periods to demonstrate the added value of combining in their research seemingly incompatible or even contradictory sources. Case studies include explorations of the symbolism of flint knives in ancient Egypt, the meaning of cuneiform glass texts, medieval metallurgical traditions, and urban archaeology at industrial sites. This volume is noteworthy, as it offers novel contributions to specific topics, as well as fundamental reflections on the problems and potentials of the interdisciplinary study of the human past.
