Book excerpt: We use administrative, survey, and online vacancy data to analyze the short-term labor market impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown in Greece. We find that flows into unemployment have not increased; in fact, separations were lower than would have been expected given trends in recent years. At the same time, employment was about 12 percent lower at the end of June than it would have been without the pandemic. Our interrupted time series and difference-in-differences estimates indicate that this was due to a dramatic slowdown in hiring during months when job creation typically peaks in normal years, mostly in tourism. While we do not formally test the reasons for these patterns, our analysis suggests that the measures introduced to mitigate the effects of the crisis in Greece have played an important role. These measures prohibited layoffs in industries affected by the crisis and tied the major form of income support to the maintenance of employment relationships.

As such "psychological contract" is defined by Rousseau (1995) as "the belief that a person for the terms and conditions of a mutual agreement transaction between him/her and another participant, in this case between the employee and the organization". More specifically, the term "psychological contract" refers to mutual obligations, values, expectations and desires of employees from their employers, beyond any formal employment contract. In other words, it is a transaction relationship, where employees and employers have certain expectations about their mutual obligations, which are, of course, different for each employee and significantly affect what each side believes is its obligation. The psychological contract has been characterized in a various ways, for example, as "unstable, subjective, unconscious, indirect, alive, something that employees know it exists, only when it is changed" (Appelbaum et al.).

The data used are classified by the number of insured employees, their wages as well as the number of active firms. The number of employees and the number of firms have been trending downwards since the summer of 2008, with the trend intensifying particularly in 2011 and 2012. However, since January 2013 a recovery has been recorded. The latter changes appear to partly reflect the effect of the labour market reforms implemented during the crisis. The evolution of the variables examined shows that if wage adjustment had been implemented earlier, the employment losses or equivalently the size and duration of unemployment may not have been so high.

Book excerpt: The aim of the study is to explore developments in key labour market aggregates, such as the unemployment rate, the participation rate and the employment rate, and to highlight the fact that in the current environment of deep and protracted economic downturn, these developments varied significantly compared with the period before the crisis. The empirical analysis, employing a two-regime threshold cointegration model, shows that the labor force participation rate has increased throughout the period from 1990 onwards, reflecting the long-term trend for increasing female employment. However, prior to 2010, this upward trend is found to be independent of the level of the unemployment rate. Conversely, after the period of Greece's entry into the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the participation rate appears to be associated with a particularly high level of unemployment rate that characterizes this period, while accompanied by a sharp fall in the employment rate. It is concluded that the recent high level of unemployment does not discourage potential workers from seeking employment. It appears, however, that new entrants have low employment chances.
