Book Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition written by Graham Speake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 2407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hellenism is the living culture of the Greek-speaking peoples and has a continuing history of more than 3,500 years. The Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition contains approximately 900 entries devoted to people, places, periods, events, and themes, examining every aspect of that culture from the Bronze Age to the present day. The focus throughout is on the Greeks themselves, and the continuities within their own cultural tradition. Language and religion are perhaps the most obvious vehicles of continuity; but there have been many others--law, taxation, gardens, music, magic, education, shipping, and countless other elements have all played their part in maintaining this unique culture. Today, Greek arts have blossomed again; Greece has taken its place in the European Union; Greeks control a substantial proportion of the world's merchant marine; and Greek communities in the United States, Australia, and South Africa have carried the Hellenic tradition throughout the world. This is the first reference work to embrace all aspects of that tradition in every period of its existence.

Book Socrates Daimonic Art

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increasing interest in the figure of Socrates and in love in ancient Greece, no recent monograph studies these topics in all four of Plato's dialogues on love and friendship. This book provides important new insights into these subjects by examining Plato's characterization of Socrates in Symposium, Phaedrus, Lysis and the often neglected Alcibiades I. It focuses on the specific ways in which the philosopher searches for wisdom together with his young interlocutors, using an art that is 'erotic', not in a narrowly sexual sense, but because it shares characteristics attributed to the daimon Eros in Symposium. In all four dialogues, Socrates' art enables him, like Eros, to search for the beauty and wisdom he recognizes that he lacks and to help others seek these same objects of erôs. Belfiore examines the dialogues as both philosophical and dramatic works, and considers many connections with Greek culture, including poetry and theater.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superior account of the development of Jewish nationalism offers one of those rare glimpses into the past that can truly illuminate the present. In The Rise and Fall of Jewish Nationalism Doron Mendels combines his unique insight into ancient Palestine with a careful analysis of historical and literacy sources, from Josephus to New Testament apocrypha, to explore the development of Jewish nationalism within the context of the Hellenistic world. Originally published as part of the Anchor Bible Reference Library, this study is of interest not only for its brilliant discussion of Jewish nationalism during the Second Temple period but also because its subject matter echoes the thorny questions raised by the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks of today.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Plato
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2023

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Cratylus written by Plato and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plato's conversation is known as Cratylus (Ancient Greek: Kratylos). In it, Socrates is questioned about whether names are ""conventional"" or ""natural,"" or if language is merely a set of random signals, or if words have an essential connection to the things they symbolize. The majority of contemporary academics concur that it was mostly composed during Plato's supposedly middle era. As an artist employs color to convey the core of his topic in a painting, Socrates compares the production of a word to the labor of an artist in Cratylus. The best way to talk is to use names that are similar to the things they name (that is, names that are appropriate for them), and the worst way to speak is to use names that are not like the things they name. According to one theory, names have developed owing to tradition and convention, thus individuals who use them can replace them with something unrelated. The opposite approach holds that names come about because they express the essence of their topic. Many of the terms that Socrates gives as examples may have originated from a concept that was formerly associated with the name, but they have since evolved.
