Book At the Margins of Planning

Download or read book At the Margins of Planning written by Stephen A. Jay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offshore wind farms are being developed on a major scale around the UK coastline as part of the drive to increase renewable energy production. This presents a new departure for the renewables sector. Having fewer physical constraints than on land, they avoid the planning system, which currently ends at low water mark. However, planning authorities and the communities they represent are deeply concerned about the consequences of offshore wind farms along their coastal zones. This book presents an empirical investigation into the attitudes of local planning authorities into the development of offshore wind farms, examining these findings in light of wider debates about the use and management of the seas and the potential contribution of the mechanisms of planning. The book also raises questions about the geographical limits of planning and how to go about establishing a form of spatial planning to cover the marine environment.

Book The Impact of Networks on Unemployment

Download or read book The Impact of Networks on Unemployment written by J. M. Hurst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates why networks, some with joined-up governance remits, appeared ineffective in handling neighbourhood unemployment even in periods when the national unemployment levels dropped. It deploys a multi-theoretical and methodological framework to investigate this empirical puzzle, and to test and analyse the causal factors influencing network outcomes. Chapters examine network concepts, network theories, outcome indicators, the historical infrastructure and management of unemployment policy, and governing network trends in post-war urban regeneration interventions. Comparative network case studies offer empirical evidence and a high degree of local variation. Mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative approaches), including social network analysis, uncover formal and informal networks, and eighty-six interviews in two English local authorities with persistent unemployment, give voice to network practitioner experiences. Findings explain why sub-optimal network outcomes prevail and operational difficulties persist on the ground. Students and academics, professionals and activists can use the results to challenge network governance theories and the policy status-quo.

Book The City s Hinterland

Download or read book The City s Hinterland written by Keith Hoggart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that the rural commuter belts of cities are major loci of population change, economic growth and dynamic social change within city regions, most research tends to ignore this area while focusing on the built-up city core. However, with the current emphasis on the role of rural areas in policy debates, it is vital to recognize the importance of the 'commuter belt'. By comparing four major European cities (in England, France, Germany and Spain), this book offers the first comparative investigation of the dynamism of city rural hinterlands. It assesses whether rural areas will become effectively integrated into quality of life improvements as a result of their inter-dependencies with cities, focusing on the critical arenas of employment change, housing and service provision. In doing so, it investigates how change in these three fields impact on the quality of life and physical environment of rural hinterlands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the full colour version of a detailed and intensively researched technical report that literally rewrites the local history of a substantial area of Norfolk, with over 80 original illustrations dealing with elements of past and present vehicular highway law in England and Wales and its specific application to the locality. It examines some of the responsibilities of a highway authority and several of the shortcomings of the Norfolk Highway Authority in particular. Highlighted is a number of the resultant 'lost', obstructed but still legally active ancient routes in, around and through the Halvergate marshes including its immediate environs within south east Norfolk. The report concludes with specific recommendations made in the light of recent changes in the law that are intended to generate public consideration and discussion.
