Book Great Travellers Volume 1

Download or read book Great Travellers Volume 1 written by Various and published by VM eBooks. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next to actual travel, the reading of first-class travel stories by men and women of genius is the finest aid to the broadening of views and enlargement of useful knowledge of men and the world’s ways. It is the highest form of intellectual recreation, with the advantage over fiction-reading of satisfying the wholesome desire for facts. With all our modern enthusiasm for long journeys and foreign travel, now so easy of accomplishment, we see but very little of the great world. The fact that ocean voyages are now called mere “trips” has not made us over-familiar with even our own kinsfolk in our new dependencies. Foreign peoples and lands are still strange to us. Tropic and Arctic lands are as far apart in condition as ever; Europe differs from Asia, America from Africa, as markedly as ever. Man still presents every grade of development, from the lowest savagery to the highest civilization, and our interest in the marvels of nature and art, the variety of plant and animal life, and the widely varied habits and conditions, modes of thought and action, of mankind, is in no danger of losing its zest. These considerations have guided us in our endeavor to tell the story of the world, alike of its familiar and unfamiliar localities, as displayed in the narratives of those who have seen its every part. Special interest attaches to the stories of those travellers who first gazed upon the wonders and observed the inhabitants of previously unknown lands, and whose descriptions are therefore those of discoverers. One indisputable advantage belongs to this work over the average record of travel: the reader is not tied down to the perusal of a one-man book. He has the privilege of calling at pleasure upon any one of these eminent travellers to recount his or her exploit, with the certainty of finding they are all in their happiest vein and tell their best stories.

Book excerpt: An epic action-adventure series set in Blizzard's popular World of Warcraft game franchise. Features a young cast of characters discovering the mysteries and majesty of the world around them. It's been years since twelve-year-old Aramar Thorne, a clever boy who is never without his precious sketch book, has seen his father. So when Captain Greydon Thorne comes ashore and asks his son to join him at sea, it feels as if someone has redrawn Aram's entire world. At sea, Aram struggles to get along with the Wavestider's crew -- especially second mate Makasa, a tough teenaged girl who has been reluctantly placed in charge of him. Just as Aram starts to get his head above water, a band of vicious pirates attack the Wavestrider, turning his world upside down once again. As Aram and Makasa try to find their way home, they encounter creatures both terrible and wondrous, and Aram will seek to understand Azeroth's denizens as he draws them in his sketchbook, forming unlikely friendships along the way. But the journey is hindered by Greydon's compass, which never points north. If the compass isn't leading Aram and Makasa home -- to safety -- to what destiny is it leading?

Download or read book With the World s Great Travellers Vol 6 Classic Reprint written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the World's Great Travellers, Vol. 6 In any excursion we just see what we take with us to see. According to mood or stock of information we see the bricks that hide the poetry, or the picture minus its paint ing. A ruin may be the visible foundation of a castle in the air, or simply a stone-heap. If there is one sacred spot where the stones cry out for the passer-by to hear their ser mons, songs, or wails, it is Rome. One treads on the dust of the mightiest people of the past. All around are the symbols of power and pomp. We drop the thread of ancient story only to find we have to link it with present achieve ments. The old and new meet here on common ground, with the Colosseum for their greeting-place and St. Peter's as a living force of to-day. The eternal city keeps its sn tiquities as of old, of course, and adds to them by dragging others from the earth, but since the court moved to Rome from Florence much modernizing of the city has been in progress. This will be less regretted when we consider that in digging foundations for new buildings there are constant ly being unearthed precious treasures of art. In the fifteen years ending with 1888 it was officially reported that one hundred and ninety-two marble statues; two hundred and sixty-six busts, seventy-seven columns, four hundred bronzes, and no fewer than thirty-seven thousand gold and silver coins had been discovered in this way.
