Book Great Catholic Laymen Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Catholic Laymen Classic Reprint written by John J. Horgan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Catholic Laymen The only reason I can advance for prefixing this introduction to a book, which will speak eloquently for itself, is that I believe that it was I who had the good fortune of inspiring the writer with the idea of the necessity in our age of some such handbook of Catholic biography, as this proves to be. For the need, though perfectly apparent, of such a series of Catholic lives, never seems to have attracted Catholic writers; or if it did, they must have assured themselves that the time was not ripe for such a publication, or that Catholic sense and intelligence were not ripe enough to demand it. And yet, who has not felt the want of some such compilation as that now presented to the public? The great writers, thinkers, and workers of other religions, or no religion, have been glorified by studies, memoirs, biographies, or reminiscences without number. Their reliques, letters - everything appertaining to them have been published, and read eagerly by a public, who delight in probing into the secrets of its heroes. Book The Catholic Layman Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Catholic Layman Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Arthur Edward Gayer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Layman, Vol. 1 The originators were not satisfied with the prevailing tone and spirit of religious controversy in Ireland, and aimed at improving it and, while doing so, desired to facilitate the researches of the student or religious inquirer, by rendering more easy of access the learned writers usually referred to in such controversies, and by furnishing those who have not a ready access to extensive libraries with extracts and authorities, on the accuracy and honesty of which they might safely rely. The conviction that some such work was needed was based upon the known facts, that good theological libraries are not everywhere accessible to general readers, and that the parochial clergy, even when themselves possessing the necessary col lection of books, are generally so much occupied by their laborious pastoral duties, that they have not the leisure needful to enable them to give their personal assistance in guiding religious inquirers to the sources from which an accurate knowledge on such subjects can alone be derived. It was thought also that it would be more easy to render such subjects generally interesting by treating of them in a monthly periodical, than by publishing at once the same amount of matter, in a more elaborate and systematic form, in a volume which would, from its very bulk, have been more likely to deter than attract the general reader. It also occurred to the originators of the work that the novelty of the experiment of opening the pages of such a periodical freely to the best writers on both sides of the questions in dispute, without any restriction, except that the combatants should preserve a kindly tone and Christian temper, would tend not only to secure a fair and accurate discussion of the great ques tions at issue, but to excite attention and public interest, without rousing bad passions or sacrificing Christian charity. In these expectations they were not disappointed. The work attained such extensive popularity that, (had the object partaken in any degree of the nature of a pecuniary speculation, ) it might have been profitably continued at the very time of its voluntary termination; inasmuch as for, the year preceding it had attained the almost unparalleled circulation of copies monthly. As the writers, however, had accomplished, to the best of their powers, the task they had imposed upon themselves, the success and popularity of the periodical afforded no inducement to them to continue it; and they deemed it more consistent with the character of the work to close its pages while its popularity and success were at the highest, than to wait until either failing health on the part of the Editor, or satiety on the part of the public, might compel its termination with a more questionable success. You may not have a mind capable of perceiving the gross indelicacy of such a pro ceeding. Book The Catholic Faith in Practice

Download or read book The Catholic Faith in Practice written by Francis Underhill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Faith in Practice: In English Parishes It might have been thought that a method which in general outline has been worked with such excellent results throughout the great body of the Catholic Church would have been accepted by the leaders of the English Church without the opposition with which the Catholic Revival has been almost every where met. It is indeed true that if the method of working out of the Catholic Revival in all its implications is a circumstance which ought to cause trembling, then there are good grounds for fear for there is no doubt whatever that the movement is making ground everywhere, among clergy and lay people alike. It is being found highly effective, and the need for a living religion which has been brought home to us by the War is making its suppression an impossibility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Church, Her Children and Institutions, Vol. 3 of 3 Indeed, one of the primary responsibilities which the Catholic layman owes in this country to his God and to his Church, is his zealous encouragement of these various societies and organizations. The society of Catholic laymen that stands preeminent in all work tending to Catholic unity is the order of the Knights of Columbus. In this great Order may be gathered all Catholic men, whose object is the welding of such into one compact body, devoted to the interests of Catholicity. It has been well called an apostolate of the laity. It has the approbation of the hierarchy, and many dignitaries of the church are enrolled as members. Book The Holy Catholic Church

Download or read book The Holy Catholic Church written by Henry Barclay Swete and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Catholic Church: The Communion of Saints; A Study in the Apostles Creed This book contains the substance of courses of lectures given at Cambridge in 1913-14 to classes consisting chiefly of candidates for the ministry of the Church of England. There are few questions of more practical importance to Christian people, whether clergy or laity, than those which are raised by a study of the character, the work, and the functions of the Catholic Church. Upon the answer which we give to those questions depends our attitude, as individuals, towards the great society of which we are members. It determines for each of us whether he shall march in the war against sin and unbelief as a soldier in the army of Christ, under the command of its officers, conscious of the honour and the joy of serving in the ranks of a trained and disciplined force; or as an irresponsible adventurer, brave and loyal at heart, but a member of an irregular company, which follows no leaders but such as are chosen by itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Goodly Heritage: Papers on Some Catholic Doctrines But sin, through the weakness of Adam and the malice of the devil and his angels, entered into the world. By sin grace was instantly lost and with the loss of grace came the loss of heaven. So man was deprived of the twofold heritage of grace here and of glory in the world to come. God's plan (to speak in human fashion) was changed. From the depths of the eternal wisdom, which foresaw the fall of man, came forth the plan of restoration, the marvellous scheme of salvation, that should undo the evil of sin, build up again the ruin of our race, give back, enhanced by the wonder and beauty of the manner of its restoration, the lost inheri tance, bringing out of the woe and evil of sin a greater good to man and greater glory to God than if the fall had never taken place. Book The Catholic Church Alone

Download or read book The Catholic Church Alone written by Henry Dodridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church Alone: The One True Church of Christ, Sumptuously; Illustrated With Famous Paintings by the Great Masters As in corporal distempers a total loss of appetite, which no medicine can restore, forbodes certain decay and death; so in the spiritual life of the soul, a neglect or disrelish of pious readings and instruction is a most fatal symptom. What hopes can we entertain of a person to whom the science of virtue and eternal salvation doth not seem interesting or worth his application? "It is impossible," says St. Chrysostom, "that a man should be saved, who neglects assiduous pious reading." No less criminal and dangerous is the disposition of those who misspend their precious moments in reading romances, which fill the mind with a worldly spirit, with a love of vanity, pleasure, idleness, and trifling, which destroy and lay waste all the generous sentiments of virtue in the heart, and sow there the seeds of every vice, which extend their influence over the whole soul. Who seeks nourishment from poison? What food is to the body, that our thoughts and reflections are to the mind: by them the affections of the soul arc nourished. The chameleon changes its color as it is affected by sadness, anger, or joy, or by the color upon which it sits; and we see an insect borrow its lustre and hue from the plant or leaf upon which it feeds. In like manner, what our meditations and affections are, such will our souls become, either holy and spiritual, or earthly and carnal. By pious reading the mind is instructed and enlightened, and the affections of the heart are purified and inflamed. Reading religions books is commended by St. Paul as the summary of spiritual advice. (2 Tim. 14, 13.) Devout persons never want a spur to assiduous reading, or meditation; they are insatiable in this exercise, and according to the golden motto of Thomas a Kempis, they find their chief delight in a closet with a good book. Worldly and tepid Christians stand certainly in the most need of this help to virtue. The world is a whirlpool of business, pleasure and sin. Its torrent is always beating upon their hearts, ready to break in and bury them under its flood, unless frequent pious reading oppose a strong fence to its waves. The more deeply a person is immersed in its tumultuous cares, so much the greater ought his solicitude to be to seek repose, after the fatigues and dissipations of business and company; to plunge his heart by secret prayer in the ocean of the divine immensity, and by pious reading to afford his soul some spiritual reflection; as the wearied husbandman, returning from his labor, recruits his spent vigor and exhausted strength by allowing his body necessary refreshment and repose. Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, has declared that He was sent by His heavenly Father "to preach the Gospel to the poor." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concerning the Church: Course of Sermons I am induced to publish these Sermons in the hope that some of my brother clergy may think them not unsuited for reading in their Churches or for lending or recommending to their parishioners. To one who believes, as I do most firmly, that the Church is God's own society, His chosen instrument and organization for the regeneration of mankind through Christ, and the ordinary channel of His gifts of grace, few things are more distressing than the ignorance, and, I may add, indifference of so many Churchmen as to what this same Church, of which they are members, is; as to its raison d'etre, its principles and constitution and claims on their allegiance. As far as my experience extends, not one Churchman in a thousand can give a valid reason, as distinguished from mere preferences, for his Churchmanship, or even say, often as he professes his faith in it, what he "believes" about "the Holy Catholic Church." Download or read book History of St Benedict the Moor Catholic Colored Mission Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Colored Mission The sole purpose'of Our Blessed Lord's coming on earth was to gather into the fold of divine mercy the lost sheep of Israel. Therefore He says of Himself: I am the Good Shepherd. His great, apostolic Heart beat only for souls. They were His meat and drink, in quest of souls He traversed the hills and dales of Palestine, sacrificed His night's rest, bore hunger and thirst, heat and cold, insult and Opprobrium, even death itself. The Good Shepherd giveth his life for his sheep. The one longing of this Divine Shepherd, we might say His ideal, was to have one fold and one shepherd. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring and they shall hear my voice and there shall be one fold and one shepherd. (john This ideal He left to be realized in His Church. Thus the Catholic Church is in principle a missionary institute. Its aim is to bring those other sheep that are not of this fold that they may hear the voice of the Good Shepherd and be saved. Therefore every priest and every Catholic layman is a mission ary by the WW fact that as a member of the Church of Christ he partici pates in its aim: the one is officially a shepherd of souls; the other by reason of the union of faith and love which makes the interests of Jesus Christ his own. Dear Reader, all over the broad, prosperous land of these United States we see wandering aimlessly without shepherd or fold thousands and millions of straying souls whom the Good Shepherd longs to carry home on His shoulder. I speak of the Colored Race, of the despised, neglected, helpless Negroes. Oh, how it pierces the priestly heart to be hold this so promising and naturally religious people crying for the bread of faith, but there is no one to break it to them! Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into, the Truth of Dogmatic Christianity Comprising a Discussion With a Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church Some time ago, for reasons of no interest to the public, I engaged in a friendly controversy on religious topics, running in a rather desultory way through several years, with a Bishop (since Archbishop) of the Roman Catholic Church. A mass of arguments on both sides of the question was thus accumulated, and friends, who think they have been benefited by reading the discussion, have urged its publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Faith, or Doctrines of the Church of Rome Contrary to Scripture and the Teaching of the Primitive Church My object in making this quotation and in the foregoing history, is simply to show my connection with the work and how I became so deeply interested in its publication. That the original plan may be fully carried out, and the faithful and devoted layman of the Church, who is the author, be in some degree rewarded for his life-long labor and study in that department of learning. Is my most earnest prayer nor have I any doubt that the catholic faith will eventually become as much a standard work as any that can be named for the use of theological students and for the clergy.
