Book Crucible of Hell

    Book Details:
  • Author : Saul David
  • Publisher : Hachette Books
  • Release : 2020-05-05

  • Pages : 448 pages

Book excerpt: From the award-winning historian, Saul David, the riveting narrative of the heroic US troops, bonded by the brotherhood and sacrifice of war, who overcame enormous casualties to pull off the toughest invasion of WWII's Pacific Theater -- and the Japanese forces who fought with tragic desperation to stop them. With Allied forces sweeping across Europe and into Germany in the spring of 1945, one enormous challenge threatened to derail America's audacious drive to win the world back from the Nazis: Japan, the empire that had extended its reach southward across the Pacific and was renowned for the fanaticism and brutality of its fighters, who refused to surrender, even when faced with insurmountable odds. Taking down Japan would require an unrelenting attack to break its national spirit, and launching such an attack on the island empire meant building an operations base just off its shores on the island of Okinawa. The amphibious operation to capture Okinawa was the largest of the Pacific War and the greatest air-land-sea battle in history, mobilizing 183,000 troops from Seattle, Leyte in the Philippines, and ports around the world. The campaign lasted for 83 blood-soaked days, as the fighting plumbed depths of savagery. One veteran, struggling to make sense of what he had witnessed, referred to the fighting as the "crucible of Hell." Okinawan civilians died in the tens of thousands: some were mistaken for soldiers by American troops; but as the US Marines spearheading the invasion drove further onto the island and Japanese defeat seemed inevitable, many more civilians took their own lives, some even murdering their own families. In just under three months, the world had changed irrevocably: President Franklin D. Roosevelt died; the war in Europe ended; America's appetite for an invasion of Japan had waned, spurring President Truman to use other means -- ultimately atomic bombs -- to end the war; and more than 250,000 servicemen and civilians on or near the island of Okinawa had lost their lives. Drawing on archival research in the US, Japan, and the UK, and the original accounts of those who survived, Crucible of Hell tells the vivid, heart-rending story of the battle that changed not just the course of WWII, but the course of war, forever.

Book V Bombs and Weathermaps

Download or read book V Bombs and Weathermaps written by Brock McElheran and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards the end of World War II Germany unleashed its weapons of vengeance on the British population - the V-1 flying bomb (a pilotless aircraft) and the V-2 rocket (the precursor of the ballistic missile). Brock McElheran experienced these fearsome weapons first-hand. In V-Bombs and Weathermaps he recounts his own experience of being under attack and pays tribute to the brave civilians in southern England. He shows that the German assault on the British population was as much a battle as any of the more familiar campaigns on the continent. A meteorological officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, McElheran studied at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich and served at naval air stations in southern England. During a V-1 attack he was seriously injured when his rooming house in Greenwich was hit. Taken to the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, famous for its pioneering work in plastic surgery, he underwent several operations and months of treatment. Back in Canada, McElheran worked in operations rooms in Ottawa and Halifax. His memoirs include previously untold stories of naval warfare off Canada's east coast. Using the journal that he kept at the time as his primary source, he combines personal experience, anecdote, and historical fact in this highly readable account of a tense but exhilarating time. Written for the general reader, the mood varies from gripping drama to delightful humour, and the author's personal experiences are placed within the larger historical context of World War II.

Book Aim for the Heart

  • ISBN : 0857710214
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book Aim for the Heart written by Howard Hughes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clint Eastwood is one of the world's most popular action stars, who has matured into a fine American producer-director. Entertaining, illuminating and packed with information, up to and including "The Changeling", this is the first book to cover his full life in the movies, from his beginnings in 1950s B-movies and in TV's "Rawhide" to "Gran Torino" showing how as both actor and filmmaker Eastwood aims for the heart of the drama, whatever the story. Howard Hughes follows Eastwood's craft through over 50 movies. He looks at his launch into superstardom in Sergio Leone's 1960s spaghetti westerns. Back in America, he built on his success as western hero with such films as "High Plains Drifter" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales", winning an Oscar for "Unforgiven" in 1992. He blasted his way through the seventies and eighties as Inspector Harry Francis Callahan, the last hope for law enforcement in San Francisco. He also monkeyed around in two phenomenally popular films with Clyde the orang-utan, which brought tough-guy Eastwood to a whole new audience and made him the biggest box office star of his generation. "Aim for the Heart" also looks at Eastwood's more unusual roles, including "The Beguiled", "The Bridges of Madison County" and "Million Dollar Baby". Since 1970, he has enjoyed parallel success as director-producer of his own Malpaso Productions, with "Bird", "Mystic River" and "Letters from Iwo Jima", demonstrating formidable directing credentials. "Aim for the Heart" covers all Eastwood's movies of many genres in detail, and Eastwood's story is illustrated with film stills, glimpses behind the scenes, and rare poster advertising material. "Aim for the Heart" also includes the most comprehensive credits filmography has ever compiled on Eastwood's work, as star and director.
