Book excerpt: Nathan Raab, America’s preeminent rare documents dealer, delivers a “diverting account of treasure hunting in the fast lane” (The Wall Street Journal) that recounts his years as the Sherlock Holmes of historical artifacts, questing after precious finds and determining their authenticity. A box uncovered in a Maine attic with twenty letters written by Alexander Hamilton; a handheld address to Congress by President George Washington; a long-lost Gold Medal that belonged to an American President; a note that Winston Churchill wrote to his captor when he was a young POW in South Africa; paperwork signed and filled out by Amelia Earhart when she became the first woman to fly the Atlantic; an American flag carried to the moon and back by Neil Armstrong; an unpublished letter written by Albert Einstein, discussing his theory of relativity. Each day, people from all over the world contact Nathan Raab for help understanding what they have, what it might be worth, and how to sell it. The Raab Collection’s president, Nathan is a modern-day treasure hunter and one of the world’s most prominent dealers of historical artifacts. Most weeks, he travels the country, scours auctions, or fields phone calls and emails from people who think they may have found something of note in a grandparent’s attic. In The Hunt for History, “Raab takes us on a wild hunt and deliciously opens up numerous hidden crevices of history” (Jay Winik, author of April 1865)—spotting a letter from British officials that secured the Rosetta Stone; discovering a piece of the first electric cable laid by Edison; restoring a fragmented letter from Andrew Jackson that led to the infamous Trail of Tears; and locating copies of missing audio that had been recorded on Air Force One as the plane brought JFK’s body back to Washington. Whether it’s the first report of Napoleon’s death or an unpublished letter penned by Albert Einstein to a curious soldier, every document and artifact Raab uncovers comes with a spellbinding story—and often offers new insights into a life we thought we knew.

Book 50 Most Forged Sports Autographs Autograph Reference Guide

Download or read book 50 Most Forged Sports Autographs Autograph Reference Guide written by Autograph Reference and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Every day, uneducated buyers spend good money on non-authentic autographs. Most thinking they are getting a great deal or “nobody else must know about this!” Sadly, most educated buyers do and watch in wonderment why someone would spend hundreds (even thousands) of dollars on a worthless item. This can be seen at local live auctions, online auctions/sales and even retail stores. That is the core reason why we spent the time and effort on creating this guide. Although there are only 50 profiles within this book, we feel it covers a large magnitude of the most common forgeries currently available to buyers. How to Use This Guide The purpose of the guide is to help educate and show buyers, collectors and dealers what to look for when reviewing an autograph and to make a better decision on whether or not to buy. Although this guide is very comprehensive and has an in depth view of what's good and bad, it shouldn't be viewed as the “final authority” for authenticating autographs. An educated buyer is a smart buyer, but we encourage you to use authentication services when purchasing your valuable collectibles. We hope this information will help you avoid bad purchases and make wiser buying decisions. Autograph Examples Each profile will have a variety of different examples on different items such as: Balls, Jerseys, Bats/Sticks, Helmets, Gloves, Flats (Photos, Index Cards, Postcards), etc. Our attempt was to get high resolution examples for both authentic and non-authentic signatures – in some cases that was difficult (mainly forgeries). As for authenticity, we used certified authentic examples and the non-authentic examples are, in our opinion, not authentic. All authentic signatures will have a black border framing the image, the non-authentic will have a grey border.

Download or read book American Heroes written by Oliver North and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Heroes Proved, a moving collection of “straightforward, honest testimonials to the courage American troops display on and off the battlefield” (Kirkus Reviews). For more than a dozen years, combat-decorated Marine Oliver North and his award-winning documentary team from FOX News Channel’s War Stories traveled to the frontlines of the War on Terror to profile the dedicated men and women who serve our nation. This time, he follows them from the battlefield to the homefront and finds extraordinary inspiration in their triumph over life-altering adversity. In this new volume of his New York Times bestselling American Heroes series, North describes the courage, commitment, and strength of those who serve—and those who love them. The term “selfless devotion” may be a cliché to many—but not to the men and women on the pages of this book. Their stories resound with bravery, a warrior ethos, and spiritual strength that will encourage us all. Heroes are people who knowingly place themselves at risk for the benefit of others. Since the terror attack of September 11, 2001, more than two million young Americans have volunteered to serve in difficult and dangerous places. No military force in history has been asked to do more than those who have served and sacrificed in this long fight. They are American heroes. So too are their loved ones here at home. These are their stories.
