Book Effects of Specialized Grazing Systems on Upland Nesting Birds in Southcentral North Dakota

Download or read book Effects of Specialized Grazing Systems on Upland Nesting Birds in Southcentral North Dakota written by Terry A. Messmer and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of season-long grazing, short duration and twice-over deferred rotation grazing systems, and idle non-use areas on upland nesting birds were evaluated from the results of nesting studies, breeding bird surveys, and visual obstruction readings of vegetative cover. Higher nesting densities of upland nesting birds were found in the undisturbed vegetation of idled areas, the ungrazed areas of season-long grazing treatments, and on the pastures or cells of grazing systems where grazing was deferred until later in the nesting season. This strong relationship between higher nest densities and undisturbed cover was clearly related to the presence of nesting cover, residual or new growth, of sufficient height and density to attract nesting hens.Dense nesting cover with low levels of disturbance were safer nest sites. Findings suggest that well-managed grazing practices and grazing systems, employing pasture deferments, may be beneficial to upland nesting birds if implemented on a.

Book Changes in Vegetation Structure in Seeded Nesting Cover in the Prairie Pothole Region

Download or read book Changes in Vegetation Structure in Seeded Nesting Cover in the Prairie Pothole Region written by Kenneth F. Higgins and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sample of 365 stands of seeded nesting cover (mixtures of cool-season grasses and legumes) was studied in the glaciated prairie pothole region during 1977-79. Measurements of species composition, canopy cover, plant height, and visual obstruction values differed with stand age but only in a general way when results from over the entire region were pooled. Maximum values for plant height and visual obstruction occurred once per stand during the first 10 growing seasons. Although the year of maximum growth was variable and unpredictable, stands showed trends of degeneration in height and visual obstruction after the year of maximum growth.

Book Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West

Download or read book Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West written by Mark C. McKinstry and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands and riparian areas between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada are incredibly diverse and valuable habitats. More than 80 percent of the wildlife species in this intermountain region depend on these wetlands—which account for less than 2 percent of the land area—for their survival. At the same time, the wetlands also serve the water needs of ranchers and farmers, recreationists, vacation communities, and cities. It is no exaggeration to call water the "liquid gold" of the West, and the burgeoning human demands on this scarce resource make it imperative to understand and properly manage the wetlands and riverine areas of the Intermountain West. This book offers land managers, biologists, and research scientists a state-of-the-art survey of the ecology and management practices of wetland and riparian areas in the Intermountain West. Twelve articles examine such diverse issues as laws and regulations affecting these habitats, the unique physiographic features of the region, the importance of wetlands and riparian areas to fish, wildlife, and livestock, the ecological function of these areas, their value to humans, and the methods to evaluate these habitats. The authors also address the human impacts on the land from urban and suburban development, mining, grazing, energy extraction, recreation, water diversions, and timber harvesting and suggest ways to mitigate such impacts.

Book Ecology and Economics of the Great Plains

Download or read book Ecology and Economics of the Great Plains written by Daniel S. Licht and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Plains were once characterized by vast expanses of grass, complex interdependence among species, and dynamic annual changes due to weather, waterways, and fire. It is now generally accepted that less than one percent of the original tallgrass prairie remains. Habitat fragmentation, the loss of natural predator-prey associations, changes in species composition, and various commercial practices continue to threaten grassland biodiversity. Recently scholars and conservationists have discussed opportunities for large-scale restoration projects in the Great Plains, but they have provided few details. Daniel Licht offers here a bold new approach to restoring and conserving the grassland ecosystem. In describing hypothetical reserves, he explains how they could help conserve grassland biodiversity, reduce federal expenditures on agriculture, increase recreational opportunities, and sustain rural economies outside the reserves.
