Book Grattan s Failure

Download or read book Grattan s Failure written by Danny Mansergh and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throws new light on the underlying causes of the 1798 rebellion and 1800 Act of Union, by examining the connection between parliamentary and extra-parliamentary agitation between 1779 and 1800. Despite the title the book is not biographical but centres upon aspects of the ideology and political practice of Henry Grattan. This is because it is contended that Grattan was the Irish MP most deeply and frequently involved in manipulating popular movements in this period - contrary to the prevailing historiographical and biographical portraits of him as a strictly constitutional statesman. His vision of the Irish constitution included both broad popular participation and (through it) effective as well as theoretical legislative independence: hence his pivotal position within the study. It is argued that the existing histories have understated the importance of his role, along with that of his parliamentary collaborators, in sowing the ideological seeds of an attempted revolution and in personally encouraging extra-parliamentary agitation. He is popularly credited as the founder of the independent Irish constitution of 1782-1800 - but he also played a part in its destruction.

Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE 2022 LA TIMES ART SEIDENBAUM AWARD FOR FIRST FICTION. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/HEMMINGWAY AWARD FOR DEBUT NOVEL. A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. "A wonderful, immersive debut novel . . . in [Thomas] Grattan’s hands, life’s joys are magnetic." --Patrick Nathan, The New York Times Book Review An extraordinary family saga following a mother and two teens as they navigate a new life in East Germany Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Beate Haas, who defected from East Germany as a child, is notified that her parents’ abandoned mansion is available for her to reclaim. Newly divorced and eager to escape her bleak life in upstate New York, where she moved as an adult, she arrives with her two teenagers to discover a city that has become an unrecognizable ghost town. The move fractures the siblings’ close relationship, as Michael, free to be gay, takes to looting empty houses and partying with wannabe anarchists, while Adela, fascinated with the horrors of the Holocaust, buries herself in books and finds companionship in a previously unknown cousin. Over time, the town itself changes—from dismantled city to refugee haven and neo-Nazi hotbed, and eventually to a desirable seaside resort town. In the midst of that change, two episodes of devastating, fateful violence come to define the family forever. Moving seamlessly through decades and between the thoughts and lives of several unforgettable characters, Thomas Grattan’s spellbinding novel is a multigenerational epic that illuminates what it means to leave home, and what it means to return. Masterfully crafted with humor, gorgeous prose, and a powerful understanding of history and heritage, The Recent East is the profoundly affecting story of a family upended by displacement and loss, and the extraordinary debut of an empathetic and ambitious storyteller.

Book The Origins of Ethical Failures

Download or read book The Origins of Ethical Failures written by Dennis Gentilin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thoroughly updated new edition of his ground-breaking and award-winning book, Dennis Gentilin draws on both his personal experience as a well-known whistleblower and recent events in the Australian financial services industry to provide insights into how widespread, systemic ethical failure can take hold in an industry and, crucially, what leaders need to focus on to avoid it. In 2001, as a young university graduate, Dennis Gentilin became a member of an FX trading desk at one of Australia’s largest banks, the National Australia Bank. In the years that followed, the desk became involved in a trading scandal that resulted in the resignation of the chairman and CEO, the collapse of the board, significant financial loss and incalculable reputational damage. Over the past decade, the frequency of ethical failure within the Australian financial services industry has only increased. Among other failures, there have been multiple breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act, rigging of the benchmark BBSW interest rate, mis-selling of consumer credit insurance and predatory sales practices. In this new edition, Gentilin draws on experimental research from economics and finance to illustrate how, when the conditions are permissive, humans have a predisposition towards dishonesty, and therefore, to reduce the likelihood of ethical failure, leaders must focus obsessively on putting in place appropriate institutional arrangements. Gentilin’s combination of intellectual rigour and real-life reflections makes this book a must-read for students, practitioners and leaders alike who would like to develop a deeper understanding of corporate ethics, governance and conduct.
