Download or read book Graphene and Other 2D Layered Nanomaterial Based Films written by Federico Cesano and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to highlighting some relevant advances in the field of thin films and coatings based on two-dimensional crystals and layered nanomaterials. Due to their layered structure, graphene and a variety of new 2D inorganic nanosystems, called “graphene analogues”, have all attracted tremendous interest due to their unprecedented properties/superior performance, and may find applications in many fields from electronics to biotechnology. These two-dimensional systems are ultrathin and, hence, tend to be flexible, also presenting distinctive and nearly intrinsic characteristics, including electronic, magnetic, optical, thermal conductivity, and superconducting properties. Furthermore, the combination of different structures and synergetic effects may open new and unprecedented perspectives, making these ideal advanced materials for multifunctional assembled systems. As far as the field of coatings is concerned, new layered nanostructures may offer unique and multifunctional properties, including gas barrier, lubricant, conductive, magnetic, photoactive, self-cleaning, and/or antimicrobial surfaces. This book contains new findings on the synthesis and perspectives of multifunctional films that are at the forefront of the science and coating technologies.

Book Multiscale Mechanics of Graphene Oxide and Graphene Based Composite Films

Download or read book Multiscale Mechanics of Graphene Oxide and Graphene Based Composite Films written by Changhong Cao and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical behavior of graphene oxide is length scale dependent: orders of magnitude different between the bulk forms and monolayer counterparts. Understanding the underlying mechanisms plays a significant role in their versatile application. A systematic multiscale mechanical study from monolayer to multilayer, including the interactions between layers of GO, can provide fundamental support for material engineering. In this thesis, an experimental coupled with simulation approach was used to study the multiscale mechanics of graphene oxide (GO) and the methods developed for GO study are proved to be applicable also to mechanical study of graphene based composites. GO is a layered nanomaterial comprised of hierarchical units whose characteristic dimension lies between monolayer GO (0.7 nm â 1.2 nm) and bulk GO papers (1 um). Mechanical behaviors of monolayer GO and GO nanosheets (10 nm- 100 nm) were comprehensively studied this work. Monolayer GO was measured to have an average strength of 24.7 GPa,, orders of magnitude higher than previously reported values for GO paper and approximately 50% of the 2D intrinsic strength of pristine graphene. The huge discrepancy between the strength of monolayer GO and that of bulk GO paper motivated the study of GO at the intermediate length scale (GO nanosheets). Experimental results showed that GO nanosheets possess high strength in the gigapascal range. Molecular Dynamic simulations showed that the transition in the failure behavior from interplanar fracture to intraplanar fracture was responsible for the huge strength discrepancy between nanometer scale GO and bulk GO papers. Additionally, the interfacial shear strength between GO layers was found to be a key contributing factor to the distinct mechanical behavior among hierarchical units of GO. The understanding of the multiscale mechanics of GO is transferrable in heterogeneous layered nanomaterials, such as graphene-metal oxide based anode materials in Li-ion batteries. The novel methods developed in this work to study GO multilayered structures were also applied to study the mechanics of graphene-TiO2 composites. It was found that a critical thickness range of TiO2 deposition on graphene is required for the observed stiffness enhancement effect of graphene to influence the mechanical behavior of the composite.

Book Langmuir Films of Graphene based Materials

Download or read book Langmuir Films of Graphene based Materials written by Luzhu Xu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphene-based materials have attracted considerable interest due to their potential use in a broad range of applications including membrane separations, electronic devices and biomaterials. Their performance in many of these applications relies on the ability to precisely control the layer number and density of films over large areas. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is one of the most promising methods to produce single layer graphene. However, the high cost, limited choice of substrates and error-prone transfer processes limit its application. On the other hand, laboratory-scale film processing approaches like spin/spray-coating, filtration and drop-casting are incapable of producing films with nanometer-scale control of film thickness and uniformity and/or over the large length scales required for many applications. Recently, the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition technique has been applied to graphene and graphene oxide with some success. In this method, the material is dispersed at the air-water interface, the floating material, held up by surface tension, is densified by the compression of two floating barriers and the resulting film is transferred onto substrates by dip coating. While good control over layer number and film density has been achieved, the technique is currently limited to small area films and suffers from the challenge that only ~1% of the material is retained at the interface during transfer while the rest is lost in the sub-phase. In this work, we developed a directed assembly process for producing GO monolayers at the air-water interface which assemble into densely tiled films without the requirement to use adjustable barriers. We demonstrate that the resulting directional film growth is amenable to roll-to-roll fabrication. By choosing a suitable spreading solvent, we obtained high-yield transfer to the air-water interface measuring Langmuir surface areas as high as 800 m2/g. Furthermore, we used both in situ Brewster angle microscopy and a custom-made Langmuir-Adam balance to study the mechanism of film formation. We also successfully extended our process to monolayer films of other 2D nanomaterials such as MoS2. As a first example of the utility of these films, we deposit dense GO monolayers onto silver nanowire transparent electrodes and demonstrate their ability to protect the nanowires from degrading under high currents.
