  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2013-04-08
  • ISBN : 1481728210
  • Pages : 149 pages

Download or read book A Can of Mixed Nuts written by Gary S. Anglin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Can of Nuts is just that...short stories, poem, essays and fish stories. Some are very funny, some will make you stop and think and some will make you feel good. There is a tribute to his adopted father, Jim L. Anglin, who was a song writer and a very early influence in the writer's life both as a person and a lover of music. The essays have subjects far ranging from the treatment of African Americans in the 1950's to what's good to eat for the holidays. The short stories just as varied in nature. One is about a murder while one is about a holiday gathering of a family whose members come from far away to be with their parents and siblings. Some of the poems are heart felt while others are of a whimsical nature. One outstanding entry is Homeless. For the lighter side there is a selection of fishing stories that come from Arkansas to Georgia to Florida and Tennessee. Most are actually true but some are, let's say, enhanced. Altogether, it is a good read. Enjoy!

Grandma Tull's Stories is a fairy tale with a touch of fantasy, a bit of magic and the menace of evil. It is a story of good versus evil; a tale of how the wondrous powers of love and justice will prevail over those things that haunt the land and stalk the night. It is the stories Grandma Tull tells to her granddaughter, Rosie, over the course of Rosie's life as she grows to young womanhood. Growing up listening to her grandmother's stories, stories ranging from Grandma Tull's narrative taken from her own life to tall tales and legends of the land, Rosie came to understand that within every story lies a heart of truth. She began to realize that each of Grandma Tull's stories build upon the previous events to form a rich history she must draw on in order to battle an ancient evil: a Troll King suspended long ago into the shape of a tree; a creature no longer troll, no longer tree, but something else, something sleek and powerful that hatred gave purpose and evil gave power. This ancient evil slides from his swamp home poisoning the land, and now he hunts Rosie.

Download or read book More Reid s Short Stories written by Alex S. Reid and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I doubt that one person would claim to have written a book without help. I certainly wouldn?t. Mary, my wonderful wife of 52 years, along with my family have encouraged me through thick and thin. Friends have helped in many ways. Then there are those I?ve met through life who?ve provided the rich material. When asked, ?Where do you get your ideas for a story I laugh because they?re all around. In my search for an illustrator, I contacted the art teacher at our local High School. One student, Arianna Palmer was thrilled at the opportunity of being published. When I saw her work, I too was excited. Thank you, Arianna, for your wonderful work. I know Rand Darrow from Books Etc., our Macedon, NY, local writers group. Rand is both author and illustrator of, Witches, Wolves and Water Spirits. He illustrated my story, Purple Man. Thanks Rand. Thank you, Paul Bagdon, my mentor, advisor and editor of my stories for sixteen years. Your encouragement has been invaluable. Paul has authored thirty-four books including, Deserter, Bad Medicine and The Busted Thumb Horse Ranch. Since a small boy growing up in England, writing short stories has been my passion. They remained hidden away until I retired and enjoyed the time to prepare them for publication. My experiences in Britain and America provided the material for these stories. The incidents, and adventures, both real and imagined are the paint for these, my pictures, illustrating my love of colorful people and of life. Some are funny, some sad, a few are strange, but all are interesting, and reflect life with its many unexpected twists and turns.

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR by New York Public Library • Kirkus Reviews • Booklist • Publishers Weekly In this gorgeous debut graphic novel, fairy tales are the only way one boy can communicate with his Vietnamese immigrant parents. But how will he find the words to tell them that he’s gay? A powerful read about family, identity and the enduring magic of stories. “One of the most astounding graphic novels of the year" –Entertainment Weekly Tien and his mother may come from different cultures—she’s an immigrant from Vietnam still struggling with English; he’s been raised in America—but through the fairy tales he checks out from the local library, those differences are erased. But as much as Tien’s mother’s English continues to improve as he reads her tales of love, loss, and travel across distant shores, there’s one conversation that still eludes him—how to come out to her and his father. Is there even a way to explain what he’s going through in Vietnamese? And without a way to reveal his hidden self, how will his parents ever accept him? This beautifully illustrated graphic novel speaks to the complexity of family and how stories can bring us together even when we don’t know the words. “A lyrical masterpiece.” –BuzzFeed
