A book that closes the generation gap one little bit, Grumpy Grandpa captures childhood and grandpa-hood with humor, hyperbole, and heart

Book The Verbal Games of Pre school Children

Download or read book The Verbal Games of Pre school Children written by Susan Grohs Iwamura and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980 The Verbal Games of Pre-school Children states that in the course of acquiring language, every child recognizes that verbal interaction is a powerful tool which can be used to interpret and manipulate the world. During the last previous two decades developments in the study of both language acquisition and linguistic theory had begun to illustrate that the acquisition of a first language involves considerably more than the mere learning of grammatical structure. This view of learning had led researchers gradually to see children as more than grammarians devising grammatical constructs. The tendency at the time was to see the child as an active partner in what are essentially games of communication and invention during which the rules of usage as well as the rules of grammar are discovered. This study is based on extensive and detailed observation of the verbal interaction of two pre-school children, and as such offers far-reaching ideas and conclusions concerning the manner in which all children determine the role of language in their lives, whilst simultaneously learning how to piece it together.

Book Reassembling Motherhood

Download or read book Reassembling Motherhood written by Yasmine Ergas and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word “mother” traditionally meant a woman who bears and nurtures a child. In recent decades, changes in social norms and public policy as well as advances in reproductive technologies and the development of markets for procreation and care have radically expanded definitions of motherhood. But while maternity has become a matter of choice for more women, the freedom to make reproductive decisions is unevenly distributed. Restrictive policies, socioeconomic disadvantages, cultural mores, and discrimination force some women into motherhood and prevent others from caring for their children. Reassembling Motherhood brings together contributors from across the disciplines to consider the transformation of motherhood as both an identity and a role. It examines how the processes of bearing and rearing a child are being restructured as reproductive labor and care work change around the globe. The authors examine issues such as artificial reproductive technologies, surrogacy, fetal ultrasounds, adoption, nonparental care, and the legal status of kinship, showing how complex chains of procreation and childcare have simultaneously generated greater liberty and new forms of constraint. Emphasizing the tension between the liberalization of procreation and care on the one hand, and the limits to their democratization due to race, class, and global inequality on the other, the book highlights debates that have emerged as these multifaceted changes have led to both the fragmentation and reassembling of motherhood.

Book Ideas of a Twentieth Century Grandfather

Download or read book Ideas of a Twentieth Century Grandfather written by James M.H. Gregg and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am a husband, a parent, a grandparent, a friend, a neighbor and a citizen of my state and nation. In my work I have served my nation as a soldier and as an executive in the service of the US Federal Government. I am now retired from paid employment but spent many hours working to better understand nature and human behavior. I'm now writing a book on social justice in which I hope to bring together many of my ideas about human behavior, human society, and the art of human living. I greatly enjoy living my life and believe it is important to live with joyful intensity. I particularly enjoy intense physical expression, exploring nature and wilderness, gardening, love, family, music, travel, and contemplating the wonderful beauty and mystery of being. I also believe it is important to give back what I can to life and particularly to human life. I have tried to do this in my career, in the creation and continued support of my family, and now in the creation of ideas that may empower my fellow humans for justice and life.
