Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, Walt Whitman described his admiration for the Union soldiers' loyalty to the ideal of democracy. His argument, that this faith bonded Americans to their nation, has received little critical attention, yet today it raises increasingly relevant questions about American patriotism in the face of growing nationalist sentiment worldwide. Here a group of scholars explores the manner in which Americans have discussed and practiced their patriotism over the past two hundred years. Their essays investigate, for example, the extent to which the promise of democracy has explained citizen loyalty, what other factors--such as devotion to home and family--have influenced patriotism, and how patriotism has often served as a tool to maintain the power of a dominant group and to obscure internal social ills. This volume examines the use of patriotic language and symbols in building unity in the early republic, rebuilding the nation after the Civil War, and sustaining loyalty in an increasingly diverse society. Continuing through the World Wars to the Clinton presidency, the essay topics range from multiculturalism to reactions toward masculine power. In addition to the editor, the contributors include Cynthia M. Koch, Cecilia Elizabeth O'Leary, Andrew Neather, Stuart McConnell, Gaines M. Foster, Kimberly Jensen, David Glassberg and J. Michael Moore, Lawrence R. Samuel, Robert B. Westbrook, Wendy Kozol, George Lipsitz, Barbara Truesdell, Robin Wagner-Pacifici, and William B. Cohen.

Book From the Outside In

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bartholomew H. Sparrow
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2014-07-14
  • ISBN : 1400864216
  • Pages : 371 pages

Download or read book From the Outside In written by Bartholomew H. Sparrow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Outside In examines the profound impact of World War II on American government. The book argues that the wartime and immediate postwar experiences of the 1940s transformed and redirected the policies and government institutions of the New Deal. In a work that makes significant contributions to the study of U.S. politics and history, Bartholomew Sparrow proposes a new model of the state and of "state-building." The author applies this model, which derives from the resource dependence perspective, to the historical record of four areas of public policy: social security, labor-management relations, public finance, and military procurement. This book is the first to use recently available archival materials documenting the consequences of World War II for the programs and political agendas of the welfare state. It is also the first to apply the resource dependency perspective to the U.S. federal government as a complex organization. The book will lead readers to reevaluate the impact of international factors on American political development, to reappraise the role of the New Deal in shaping the postwar federal government, and to reconsider the application of organizational theory to American government. From the Outside In will be of particular interest to political scientists, political sociologists, and historians. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in the comprehensive effects of the Second World War on domestic policies and U.S. government itself. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Myth and the Greatest Generation

Download or read book Myth and the Greatest Generation written by Kenneth Rose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myth and the Greatest Generation calls into question the glowing paradigm of the World War II generation set up by such books as The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw. Including analysis of news reports, memoirs, novels, films and other cultural artefacts Ken Rose shows the war was much more disruptive to the lives of Americans in the military and on the home front during World War II than is generally acknowledged. Issues of racial, labor unrest, juvenile delinquency, and marital infidelity were rampant, and the black market flourished. This book delves into both personal and national issues, calling into questions the dominant view of World War II as ‘The Good War’.

Book When Conscience and Power Meet

Download or read book When Conscience and Power Meet written by Eugene N. Zeigler and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeigler made a name for himself in South Carolina politics through his campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1972 against Strom Thurmond and a subsequent candidacy in the states 1974 Democratic gubernatorial primary. Unsuccessful in both, Zeigler nonetheless distinguished himself as a man of passionate convictions in the value of public service. His memoir recounts these and other defining moments from a life spent pursuing the public good, often against insurmountable opposition. A native of Florence, South Carolina, Zeigler represents a vanishing breed of public servantthe classically educated progressive rising from modest small-town roots and driven by a genuine sense of responsibility to better his community, state, and country. Throughout his career, Zeigler has faced the frustration of being on the verge of high office or important reform, yet ending up on the losing side or having played just a minor role in victory. Undaunted by these near misses, he takes satisfaction in the effort over the results.
