Somthing that had been locked in Teresa's subconscious until recently. Why had God spared her. It wasn't a question, not really, she knew the reason. Could she do it? Time was not her friend. Unconsciously touching her heart as if trying to erase something only visible to her, Teresa straightened her shoulders when she heard the knock at the door, it begins. "Come in," she said to her grandaughter Kay. Kay drove from the Commuity Center in a daze. She clutched the tape in her pocket as id her life depended on it. She couldn't imagine the strength it must have taken her grandmother to hold on to this information for eighty years. Kay knew about the midwives, Melana and Meira, but what she heard on the tape was amazing and scary. She was stunned. "Shit," she said as she threw on the brakes, How was she going...? She needed help. Again Kay wondered if she could do what her grandmother asked. She she have the courage to act?

As the story unfolds the characters develop enabling us to recognise their strengths and weaknesses. It is about a family who are shaped by great tragedy, cruel hardship, intrigue and Victorian snobbery. Martha Moon's husband and his brother are Master Mariners who loose their lives at sea leaving their wives to provide for their children. When Martha's only son then dies tragically of a deadly disease in Australia, her daughters are left to make the most of their poverty with dignity and the 'hope' of a lost legacy. Matilda, Martha's eldest daughter struggles to bring up nine children with little help from her husband and it is then left to Minnie, her eldest daughter to try to regain lost ground. A feisty character, Minnie is ready to uphold the poor and needy and the rights of both women and children. She surprises everyone by marrying against her principles and looses her home twice to fire, at the same time loosing any hope of motherhood or personal fulfilment; but inspired by her grandmother, she keeps her faith in God and lives to be over a hundred years old. Her brother's daughter, Sabina is the one remaining descendent of the 'Moon" family in England. She has an uncertain future and poor health, but Min sees to it that she will inherit what is left of their legacy, and together they discover that it is 'All Moonshine'.

Book excerpt: Finalist for the 1991 National Book Award and a New York Times Notable book, Praying for Sheetrock is the story of McIntosh County, a small, isolated, and lovely place on the flowery coast of Georgia--and a county where, in the 1970s, the white sheriff still wielded all the power, controlling everything and everybody. Somehow the sweeping changes of the civil rights movement managed to bypass McIntosh entirely. It took one uneducated, unemployed black man, Thurnell Alston, to challenge the sheriff and his courthouse gang--and to change the way of life in this community forever. "An inspiring and absorbing account of the struggle for human dignity and racial equality" (Coretta Scott King)

The cops don’t know if it was suicide, but for days, her body has lain in a cabin, her wheelchair toppled, her hand around a shotgun—and her terrified dog starving. So they call in Raine Stockton, known among these parts for her canny way with canines… Busy with a thriving kennel business, an annoying new neighbor, four dogs, and an estranged husband looking to reunite, Raine hardly has time for the poor dog she’s named Hero. But as she falls for him, questions surface: Why were there no groceries, luggage, or dog food in the cabin? And if Michelle was paralyzed on her right side, why was the gun in her right hand? Only Hero knows…and it’s up to Raine to find out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ozarks conveys a different mental image for everyone. Some visualize long black beards, moonshine whiskey, and corncob pipes, while others imagine canoe trips down clear, free-flowing, gravel-bottom streams, oak and hickory forests, a log cabin nestled in a wooded grove, and a wisp of blue-gray smoke floating above a native stone chimney. Life in the Missouri Ozarks was hard and taken seriously. At the same time, the folks who scratched out a living from the rocky ground never lost their sense of humor and the zest for life. Pie suppers, turkey shoots, and church were time for folks to get together and catch up on what was happening with their neighbors. Between the covers of this book, you will experience colorful characters, boyhood shenanigans, and a real feel for what is was like to be a big-city kid moving back to his ancestral roots. If you haven't experienced the sweetness of a ripe watermelon chilled in a cold spring and laced with high-quality moonshine, you should add it to your bucket list. Or better yet, discover the experience through the tale of an innocent boy's first taste.
