Book excerpt: This book is a journal that will take you on a roller coaster ride traipsing through my severely distressed mind as I work through the recovery process from past childhood sexual abuse. Going to a counselor twice a week, journaling daily, and experiencing the extreme emotional highs and lows all while keeping these secrets from my family was very painful and tricky. You will go step by step with me as I work through many issues such as feelings of shame and worthlessness, playing the blame game, and low self-esteem, just to name a few, in an attempt to regain my sanity.

Book excerpt: "I compare this book to Mary McCarthy's The Group, and feel it has every chance to be a mini-series or as a big screen blockbuster. It's also perhaps the finest description of addiction and its effects on lovers, family, and friends in contemporary American fiction....use that quote in any manner you wish. - John Frederick, Documentary Producer, California This book is incredible. I read it twice! First, very fast. The second time I couldn't believe that you can be so uplifting - almost like Dr. Wayne Dyer - not only great with your quotes but your fiction is alive all the time. It reminded me of my own life story - my first marriage and surviving with two smart handsome boys in a tough city like New York. - Eva Pollack, Physical Therapist, New York I wanted to tell you that I read the first five chapters of your book and I couldn't stop reading though I am in the midst of moving. Though I spent many years in NYC City, it was at a later period. I am European. Yet, I loved the very human qualities of this dysfunctional family, the Brooklyn touches and certainly the Yiddish terms. I used to hear those from all my Jewish friends. It is all sooo New York. I'm looking forward to reading the rest! - Annouk Van de Voorde, Belgian writer who grew up in Africa and now lives in Arizona"

Download or read book Connecting Childhood and Old Age in Popular Media written by Vanessa Joosen and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Gökçe Elif Baykal, Lincoln Geraghty, Verónica Gottau, Vanessa Joosen, Sung-Ae Lee, Cecilia Lindgren, Mayako Murai, Emily Murphy, Mariano Narodowski, Johanna Sjöberg, Anna Sparrman, Ingrid Tomkowiak, Helma van Lierop-Debrauwer, Ilgim Veryeri Alaca, and Elisabeth Wesseling Media narratives in popular culture often assign interchangeable characteristics to childhood and old age, presuming a resemblance between children and the elderly. These designations in media can have far-reaching repercussions in shaping not only language, but also cognitive activity and behavior. The meaning attached to biological, numerical age—even the mere fact that we calculate a numerical age at all—is culturally determined, as is the way people “act their age.” With populations aging all around the world, awareness of intergenerational relationships and associations surrounding old age is becoming urgent. Connecting Childhood and Old Age in Popular Media caters to this urgency and contributes to age literacy by supplying insights into the connection between childhood and senescence to show that people are aged by culture. Treating classic stories like the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales and Heidi; pop culture hits like The Simpsons and Mad Men; and international productions, such as Turkish television cartoons and South Korean films, contributors explore the recurrent idea that “children are like old people,” as well as other relationships between children and elderly characters as constructed in literature and media from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. This volume deals with fiction and analyzes language as well as verbally sparse, visual productions, including children's literature, film, television, animation, and advertising.

Download or read book Witnessing Sadism in Texts of the American South written by Claire Raymond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at works by Carrie Mae Weems, Toni Morrison, Emily Dickinson, Flannery O'Connor, Dorothy Allison, Carson McCullers, and Zora Neale Hurston, Claire Raymond uncovers a pattern of femininity constructed around representations of sadistic violence in American women's literature and photography from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Dickinson's poetry is read through its relationship to the Southern Agrarian critics who championed her work. While the representations of violence found in Carrie Mae Weems's installation From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried, Morrison's Beloved, Dickinson’s poetry, O'Connor's 'A View of the Woods' and 'A Good Man Is Hard to Find,' Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina, McCullers' Ballad of the Sad Café, and Hurston's Mules and Men are diverse in terms of artistic presentation, all allude to or are set in the antebellum and Jim Crow South. In addition, all involve feminine characters whose subjectivity is shaped by the practice of seeing acts of violence inflicted where there can be no effective resistance. While not proposing an equivalence between representing violence in visual images and written text, Raymond does suggest that visual images of violence can be interpreted in context with written evocations of violent imagery. Invoking sadism in its ethical sense of violence enacted on a victim for whom self-defense and recourse of any kind are impossible, Raymond's study is ultimately an exploration of the idea that a femininity constructed by the positioning of feminine characters as witnesses to sadistic acts is a phenomenon distinctly of the American South that is linked to the culture's history of racism.
