Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bowl Full of Memories: 100 Years of Football at the Yale Bowl covers the Yale football from its inception in 1872 and pays tribute to the historic Yale Bowl, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014. Based on more than 150 interviews—more than 100 of which were conducted with former players—the book serves as a time-capsule of Yale football by those who took part in this most storied college football program. Players, coaches, writers, broadcasters and fans give their view of the spectacle, people, places, and contests that make Yale football history come to life. Marazzi, who has seen almost every game in the Yale Bowl in the last 50 years, gives due attention to the career of towering figures like legendary Yale football coach Walter Camp, whose story is important to understanding Yale football and the evolution of the game as we know it. And of course he covers the one of the oldest rivalries in college sports, between Yale and Harvard. The book takes readers into the huddle, the locker room, the practice field, the campus, and the hearts and minds of Yalies over the past century. Bowl Full of Memories: 100 Years of Football at the Yale Bowl is a book that every Yale alum, Ivy League and college football fan will want to own and refer to often. Download or read book Lincoln Memorial University and the Shaping of Appalachia written by Earl J. Hess and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located near Cumberland Gap in the rugged hills of East Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) was founded in 1897 to help disadvantaged Appalachian youth and reward the descendents of Union loyalists in the region. Its founder was former Union General Oliver Otis Howard, a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, who made it his mission to sustain an institution of higher learning in the mountain South that would honor the memory of the Civil War president. In Lincoln Memorial University and the Shaping of Appalachia, LMU Professor Earl J. Hess presents a highly readable and compelling history of the school. Yet the book is much more than a chronology of past events. The author uses the institution’s history to look at wider issues in Appalachian scholarship, including race and the modernization of educational methods in Appalachia. LMU offered a work-learn program to help students pay their way, imparting the value of self-help, and it was hit by a massive student strike that nearly wrecked the institution in 1930. LMU has played an important role in shaping what higher learning could be for young people in its region of southern Appalachia. The volume examines the involvement of O. O. Howard and his unflagging efforts to establish and fund the school; the influence of early twentieth-century industrial capitalism— Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller were benefactors—on Appalachia and LMU in particular; and the turn-of-the-century cult of Lincoln that made the university a major repository of Lincolniana. Meticulously researched and richly illustrated, Lincoln Memorial University and the Shaping of Appalachia is a fresh look at the creation, contributions, and enduring legacies of LMU. Students, alumni, and friends of the university, as well as scholars of Appalachian culture and East Tennessee history, will find this book both enlightening and entertaining. Earl J. Hess holds the Stewart W. McClelland Chair in History at Lincoln Memorial University. He is the author of more than a dozen books on Civil War military history, the latest of which is Into the Crater: The Mine Attack at Petersburg.

Download or read book A New History of German Cinema written by Jennifer M. Kapczynski and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2012 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic, event-centered exploration of the hundred-year history of German-language film. This dynamic, event-centered anthology offers a new understanding of the hundred-year history of German-language film, from the earliest days of the Kintopp to contemporary productions like The Lives of Others. Eachof the more than eighty essays takes a key date as its starting point and explores its significance for German film history, pursuing its relationship with its social, political, and aesthetic moment. While the essays offer ampletemporal and topical spread, this book emphasizes the juxtaposition of famous and unknown stories, granting attention to a wide range of cinematic events. Brief section introductions provide a larger historical and film-historicalframework that illuminates the essays within it, offering both scholars and the general reader a setting for the individual texts and figures under investigation. Cross-references to other essays in the book are included at the close of each entry, encouraging readers not only to pursue familiar trajectories in the development of German film, but also to trace particular figures and motifs across genres and historical periods. Together, the contributionsoffer a new view of the multiple, intersecting narratives that make up German-language cinema. The constellation that is thus established challenges unidirectional narratives of German film history and charts new ways of thinkingabout film historiography more broadly. Jennifer Kapczynski is Associate Professor of German at Washington University, St. Louis, and Michael Richardson is Associate Professor of German at Ithaca College.

When pharmacist Jim Gatchell opened his drugstore in 1900, it had an immediate impact on the Johnson County community. Before his arrival in Buffalo, Gatchell had grown up on a Lakota Sioux reservation. Because of this and his caring nature, he became a trusted friend of the region's Native Americans. They brought him many gifts, and as word spread, friends and acquaintances began donating mementos of historic people, places, and events from Johnson County and the Powder River region. After Gatchell's death in 1954, his family donated his collection to Johnson County with the provision that a museum be built to house it. The museum opened its doors in 1957 and became a nationally accredited museum in 2002.

It contains a brief account of Mr Frost's life written by his wife, as well as poems, the funeral sermon by Mr James Dickens of Rotherfield, some of Mr Frost's letters and four of his sermons. One of the sermons was an address given to the congregation of Christ Church, Crowborough Cross which was at the time a Free Church of England place of worship. Mr Frost accepted the invitation on the basis that he would be allowed to preach in accordance with his own faith and order. This book has been reprinted as a facsimile of the original.
Download or read book The Securitization of Memorial Space written by Nicholas S. Paliewicz and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Securitization of Memorial Space argues that the National September 11 Memorial and Memorial Museum is a securitized site of memory--what Foucault called a dispositif--that polices visitors and publics to remember trauma, darkness, and victimage in ways that perpetuate the "necessity" of the Global War on Terrorism. Contributing to studies in public memory, rhetoric and argumentation, and critical security studies, Nicholas S. Paliewicz and Marouf Hasian Jr. show how various human and nonhuman actors participated in complicated argumentative formations that have mobilized political, performative, and militaristic practices of anti-terroristic violence in other parts of the world. While there were times that certain argumentative stakeholders--such as local New Yorkers--questioned the necessity of securitizing this site of memory, agentic factions including the families of those who died on 9/11, public supporters, security agents, and politicians created an ideologically oriented security assemblage that remembers 9/11 through counter-terroristic performances at Ground Zero. In chronological order from the 2001 "dustbowl" to the present popularization of 9/11 memories, the authors present seven chapters of rich rhetorical analysis that show how the National September 11 Memorial and Memorial Museum perpetuates grief, uncertainty, and angst that affects public memory in multidirectional ways.

Once it was decided the revolution John Lennon sang about was over, a new revolution began. The Poodles are the grandchildren of that revolution. Instead of "power to the people," it was "power to the pink." Before the day's end, the Poodles would know just how far the power of pink had come. The stage was set. The St. Percy Poodles vs. the Nugget State Tigers on homecoming week-end with the national championship at stake. Draglove, AZ was pink "ground zero" as 85,000 strong gathered at Poodle Stadium for the "Treat in the Heat".
