Book The Dynamics and Social Outcomes of Education Systems

Download or read book The Dynamics and Social Outcomes of Education Systems written by J. Janmaat and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some scholars argue that education systems across the western world are becoming increasingly similar due to the influence of transnational discourses and organizations. Others believe that education is the panacea for all problems of social cohesion. After all, aren't the well-educated usually more tolerant, civically engaged and trusting than the poorly educated? This book critically examines both claims. It finds that western countries still differ markedly on key aspects of their education systems and that these differences reflect distinct political traditions and different responses to a set of competing normative and political principles. The findings further suggest that raising the average education level is unlikely to be an effective strategy for promoting social cohesion. Instead, more promising are policies targeting the opposite ends of the lifelong learning continuum: universalizing pre-school education and care and promoting adult education with a pronounced second chance character.

Book Trajectories in the Development of Modern School Systems

Download or read book Trajectories in the Development of Modern School Systems written by Daniel Tröhler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As contemporary education becomes increasingly tied to global economic power, national school systems attempting to influence one another inevitably confront significant tensions caused by differences in heritage, politics, and formal structures. Trajectories in the Development of Modern School Systems provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical critique of the reform movements that seek to homogenize schooling around the world. Informed by historical and sociological insight into a variety of nations and eras, these in-depth case studies reveal how and why sweeping, convergent reform agendas clash with specific institutional policies, practices, and curricula. Countering current theoretical models which fail to address the potential pressures born from these challenging isomorphic developments, this book illuminates the cultural idiosyncrasies that both produce and problematize global reform efforts and offers a new way of understanding curriculum as a manifestation of national identity.

This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latvian economy contracted with significant disinflation against the backdrop of geopolitical headwinds. Persistent services inflation, driven by strong nominal wage growth amid tight labor markets, keeps core inflation elevated. Productivity growth has failed to match real wage increases, weighing on competitiveness. The economic consequences of Russia’s war in Ukraine continue to depress private investment and productivity, thus compromising further Latvia’s lagging income convergence. The government needs to address long-term spending pressures related to its priorities and multiple transitions around climate change and energy, aging and skilled labor shortages, and rising defense costs. The coalition’s priorities include managing the fallout from the war in Ukraine, ensuring energy independence, addressing social issues, and pursuing tax reform.
