Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World We Want compares the future world that Enlightenment intellectuals had hoped for with our own world at present. In what respects do the two worlds differ, and why are they so different? To what extent is and isn't our world the world they wanted, and to what extent do we today still want their world? Unlike previous philosophical critiques and defenses of the Enlightenment, the present study focuses extensively on the relevant historical and empirical record first, by examining carefully what kind of future Enlightenment intellectuals actually hoped for; second, by tracking the different legacies of their central ideals over the past two centuries. But in addition to documenting the significant gap that still exists between Enlightenment ideals and current realities, the author also attempts to show why the ideals of the Enlightenment still elude us. What does our own experience tell us about the appropriateness of these ideals? Which Enlightenment ideals do not fit with human nature? Why is meaningful support for these ideals, particularly within the US, so weak at present? Which of the means that Enlightenment intellectuals advocated for realizing their ideals are inefficacious? Which of their ideals have devolved into distorted versions of themselves when attempts have been made to realize them? How and why, after more than two centuries, have we still failed to realize the most significant Enlightenment ideals? In short, what is dead and what is living in these ideals?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable introduction to Henry IV Part Two as a performance text draws on traditional methods of performance analysis as well as theatre semiotics, historical analysis, feminism and cultural materialism. Barbara Hodgdon demonstrates how each intersects with sociocultural circumstances, producing a dialogue between a transhistorical 'Merrie England' and the historically local circumstances of present-day theatrical and political cultures. The key stagings discussed include those of Michael Redgrave, Terry Hands, Trevor Nunn and Michael Bogdanov. Ranging beyond the bounds of the conventional theatre, Barbara Hodgdon also looks at Orson Welles' film adaptation, Chimes at Midnight, and at David Giles' production for the BBC/Time-Life Shakespeare series.

Book Power and the Pursuit of Peace Theory and Practice in the History of Relations Between States

Download or read book Power and the Pursuit of Peace Theory and Practice in the History of Relations Between States written by F. H. Hinsley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1967-10 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last years of the nineteenth century peace proposals were first stimulated by fear of the danger of war rather than in consequence of its outbreak. In this study of the nature and history of international relations Mr Hinsley presents his conclusions about the causes of war and the development of men's efforts to avoid it. In the first part he examines international theories from the end of the middle ages to the establishment of the League of Nations in their historical setting. This enables him to show how far modern peace proposals are merely copies or elaborations of earlier schemes. He believes there has been a marked reluctance to test these theories not only against the formidable criticisms of men like Rousseau, Kant and Bentham, but also against what we have learned about the nature of international relations and the history of the practice of states. This leads him to the second part of his study - an analysis of the origins of the modern states' system and of its evolution between the eighteenth century and the First World War.

Book The Congress of Vienna and its Legacy

Download or read book The Congress of Vienna and its Legacy written by Mark Jarrett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1814 the five reigning dynasties of Europe, Alexander I of Russia and ministers such Metternich and Talleyrand, descended upon Vienna. The Vienna Congress marked one of the great turning points in diplomatic history; the first attempt to create an 'international order' to secure peace for the nineteenth century. The blueprint for modern-day global governance models such as the UN, it was a response to Napoleon's expansion across Europe, and sought to build upon the state systems he left behind whilst shoring up the privileges and power of Europe's elite. Here, Mark Jarrett argues that the Congress of Vienna in fact marked the beginning of the end for the Ancien Regime, yet, despite its disintegration following the suicide of Castlereagh, the 'congress system' has had an enormous influence up to the present day. The role of diplomacy as a means to conflict resolution, the workings of multi-lateralism and the emphasis on international organizations to guarantee national sovereignty were all long term by-products of the 'congress system'. A new synthesis of archival material, The Congress System is a fresh exploration of a key event in the history of International Relations and Diplomacy.

Book Trust in Early Modern International Political Thought 1598 1713

Download or read book Trust in Early Modern International Political Thought 1598 1713 written by Peter Schröder and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can there ever be trust between states? This study explores the concept of trust across different and sometimes antagonistic genres of international political thought during the seventeenth century. The natural law and reason of state traditions worked on different assumptions, but they mutually influenced each other. How have these traditions influenced the different concepts and discussions of trust-building? Bringing together international political thought and international law, Schröder analyses to what extent trust can be seen as one of the foundational concepts in the theorising of interstate relations in this decisive period. Despite the ongoing search for conditions of trust between states, we are still faced with the same structural problems. This study is therefore of interest not only to specialists and students of the early modern period, but also to everyone thinking about ways of overcoming conflicts which are aggravated by a lack of mutual trust.

These methods permit (1) an account of the human endowment taking up thought, feeling, and behavior from fruitful new perspectives, (2) a correspondingly new account of the course of Western history seen from the point of view of the degrees of retention, surrender, and deformation of fundamental elements of the human endowment over time, and (3) a therapeutic program based on the present condition of that endowment.
