Book Critical Approaches to Rub n Dar o

Download or read book Critical Approaches to Rub n Dar o written by Keith Ellis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1974-12-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rubén Darío (1867-1916) of Nicaragua was the leader of the important Latin American literary movement known as Modernism. He is considered by many to be the greatest poet in Latin American literature, and the volume of writings devoted to his work since 1884 is perhaps greater than that on any other writer in the history of Spanish American literature. The celebration in 1967 of the centenary of his birth gave rise to a formidable number of new analyses, increasing the need for the classification and assessment of the many studies. In this book Professor Ellis examines and evaluates the wide range of methods and perspectives available to the reader of Darío's works. He considers the biographical approach, social and political questions, influences and sources, structural analysis (providing three structural studies of his own), and, in an appendix, Darío's own concept of the role of the literary critic. His book is comprehensive both in time and in range, and includes an up-to-date bibliography. This is the first systematic study of the critical works on a Spanish American writer. It is significant not only in its treatment of the work on an individual author, but also as a reflection on and an indication of the trends, methods, and preoccupations of modern appraisals of Latin American writing.

Book excerpt: "In a study which covers the entirety of Montejo's career as poet and essayist, this book examines how the work of this seminal Venezuelan writer explores and deals with the experiences of loss in the twentieth century. This represents the first book-length study in English of Montejo's work and the first monograph in any language to offer a sustained thematic analysis of his entire output. In the process, it serves to bring out from the academic shadows one of the most important and commanding poetic voices to emerge from Latin America to the last fifty years." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: To the Iroquois, "extending the rafters" meant adding onto the longhouse, both in the literal sense of making room for new families and in the figurative sense of adding adopted individuals or tribes to the League of Five Nations. Similarly, this book extends Iroquois studies. The distinguished contributors represent such diverse areas of anthropology as ethnology, ethnohistory, and archaeology. They address issues that cut across disciplinary lines, making this book a significant, state-of-the-art survey. The topics explored revolve around the influence, contributions, field work, and teachings of anthropologist William N. Fenton, a founder of the discipline of ethnohistory. The essays run the gamut from prehistory to contemporary political issues, from individuals to women and nations, and from language to ritual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a theoretically based approach to the integration of language and content in primary and secondary contexts. Drawing on their wide experience as CLIL educators and researchers, the authors explore data collected in real CLIL classrooms from two interrelated perspectives: the CLIL classroom as an interactional context for developing language and content, and the genres and registers through which the meanings of the different academic subjects are enacted. From the analysis of this corpus of data, the authors provide a rich description of how CLIL students' language works and may be expected to develop. Also available separately as a hardback.

Book Communication Digital Media and Everyday Life

Download or read book Communication Digital Media and Everyday Life written by Tony Chalkley and published by OUP Australia and New Zealand. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication, Digital Media and Everyday Life (Second Edition) uses stories to explain the journey from 'new media in communication' to 'digital media is communication' and provide a clear introduction to communication and media theory and practice. For Generations Y and Z, digital media is now embedded into most aspects of daily life and integrated into contemporary communication as much as speaking, reading and writing. This book encourages readers to understand how they use 'new' media to do 'old' things and explores how concepts of communication, digital media and everyday life intersect with one another. The first section part of the book introduces the building blocks of communication; its basic tools, devices and approaches. The second section part takes these ideas and concepts in the first part and applies them to 'new' media: it considers including ideology in film and television; organisational communication; and values in the new digital world; and how identity, privacy, deception and truth have been redefined. The third part section part looks at communication today-including the redefinition of identity, privacy, deception and truth- and explores what it might be like to live in an increasingly digital world.
