Tout cela demande une grande rigueur de m'thode, beaucoup de cri tique, de nettet' d'esprit et de bon sens, un sentiment tr's fin de la langue qu'on 'tudie, je dirais m'me beaucoup de got, si ce terme n''tait pas peut - 'tre trop, ambitieux en pareille mati're. C'est grce ces qualit's que la grammaire latine de M. Madvig, par exemple, quoique ce ne soit qu'un livre 'l'mentaire, est un guide presque toujours sr et un mod'le imiter; c'est l'absence des m'mes qualit's qui fait que tant d'autres travaux, m'ritoires par la peine qui y a 't' d'pens'e, ne sont pas aussi utiles qu'ils le pourraient 'tre, parce qu'ils.sont faits avec peu de critique et qu'on ne s'y peut fier qu' demi.
