For more than twenty centuries, grammar has been the cornerstone of humanist education, and has been transmitted continuously, albeit in changing - chronologically, geographically, politically, and institutionally - contexts. The papers in this volume document the transmission, adaptation and re-elaboration of grammar, since Antiquity, by focusing on its foundational concepts and techniques. The vectors of these processes of transmission and adaptation are texts, and behind these texts, we can reconstruct networks of interaction: between teachers and students, between scholars and models of description, and - as the overarching dynamics - the dialogue between the members of the "virtual community" interested in the study of language. Book excerpt: The Physiologus, an early Christian writing in Greek (ca. 200 A.D.), consists of cameo stories about the nature of animals, with a religious interpretation of their peculiarities. It was widespread during the Middle Ages in various languages. The study of more than forty manuscripts of the Armenian Physiologus reveals its main recension (ms M2101 and others), translated during the first half of the fifth century, and two subsequent recensions. The translation is close to the eleventh century Greek Codex Mosquensis (Synodal Library 432). The Physiologus had widespread influence in both eastern and western writings, and the Armenian version is one of the oldest and most faithful witnesses. In addition, the "revised diplomatic edition" of the parallel Greek and Armenian texts based on the mentioned manuscripts, regards variant readings which bring the two texts close to each other, helping to reconstruct their archetype.

Aramaic, a subfamily of Semitic, is closely related to Hebrew and the other Canaanite languages; together, the two subfamilies of Aramaic and Canaanite constitute the northwest branch of the Semitic phylum. In this study, Joseph L. Malone focuses on thirteen dialects of Aramaic, chosen from a candidate list of approximately twice that number. The specific varieties of Aramaic examined here are chosen to provide an optimal chronological and geographical range. In a similar vein, the finite verb serves as the subject of this study, based on the assumption that a thorough treatment of the verb will asymptomatically involve most of the patterns and processes that hold for the grammar as a whole. The tools of this study are drawn from standard generative linguistics, though care is taken to explicate these in more traditional terms where it is deemed necessary. This book is essential reading for linguists who study the Semitic language families, and in particular those interested in Northwest Semitic languages.
