Book Differentiation at Work K 5

Download or read book Differentiation at Work K 5 written by Lane Narvaez and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2010-04-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on research and the authors' experiences over the past seven years at one elementary school, Differentiation at Work, K-5 describes what schoolwide differentiation looks like in real classrooms. Lane Narvaez and Kay R. Brimijoin go beyond the "easy" definition of differentiation and describe why administrators and teachers need to receive training and ongoing support in order to achieve differentiated instruction that is responsive to students' readiness, learning styles, and interests. Their model is based on several core elements, including student feedback, the use of anchor activities, peer (teacher) collaboration, pre-assessment, and curriculum alignment. The book includes sample lesson designs that include supplemental materials, and lessons are categorized by readiness, interest, and learning style differentiation. The authors also address the topic of management and share a set of tools that have proven highly effective for facilitating and enhancing differentiation. Finally, they discuss the challenge of sustaining second order change, the role parents play in nurturing and sustaining such change, and the future possibilities for any school involved in a similar journey.

Book The Causes of High and Low Reading Achievement

Download or read book The Causes of High and Low Reading Achievement written by Ronald P. Carver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes all of the important factors that cause some students to have low reading achievement and others to have high reading achievement. It concentrates on the main factors that influence how much a student gains in reading achievement during a year of school, or a calendar year. An attempt is made to answer the following questions: what can educators do to increase reading achievement, and what is beyond their influence? The author is directly concerned with achievement associated with normal or typical reading. The focus of the book is on things teachers can do during an entire school year that are likely to improve the reading level and reading rate of students, which in turn, will increase their reading achievement. This effort to specify the most important causes of high and low reading achievement represents an integration of two disciplines of scientific psychology--experimental psychology and psychometrics. A glossary at the end of the book contains definitions of terms and concepts. Helpful appendices explain rauding theory, the three laws of rauding theory, and the equations that can be used to predict the accuracy of reading comprehension, provide conversions among units of rauding rate, and list the numbered equations presented in the book.

Download or read book Overcoming the Odds written by Jennie E. Brand and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, millions of high school students consider whether to continue their schooling and attend and complete college. Despite evidence showing that a college degree yields far-reaching benefits, critics of higher education increasingly argue that college “does not pay off” and some students - namely, disadvantaged prospective college goers - would be better served by forgoing higher education. But debates about the value of college often fail to carefully consider what is required to speak knowledgeably about the benefits –what a person’s life might look like had they not completed college, or their college counterfactual. In Overcoming the Odds sociologist Jennie E. Brand reveals the benefits of completing college by comparing life outcomes of college graduates with their college counterfactuals. Drawing on two cohorts of nationally representative data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics National Longitudinal Surveys program, Brand uses matching and machine learning methods to estimate the effects of college completion across students with varying likelihoods of completing four-year degrees. To illustrate her findings, Brand describes outcomes using matched vignettes of college and non-college graduates. Brand shows that four-year college completion enables graduates to increase wages and household income, while also circumventing unemployment, low-wage work, job instability, poverty, and social assistance. Completing college also increases civic engagement. Most of these benefits are larger for disadvantaged than for more advantaged students, rendering arguments that college has limited benefits for unlikely graduates as flawed. Brand concludes that greater long-term earnings, and less job instability and unemployment, and thus more tax revenue, less reliance on public assistance, and high levels of volunteering indicate that public investment in higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds yields far-reaching collective benefits. She asserts that it is better for our society when more people complete college. Overcoming the Odds is an innovative and enlightening exploration of how college can transform lives.

Book excerpt: This volume examines how oral and written language function in school learning , and how oral texts can be successfully inter-connected to the written texts that are used on a daily basis in schools. Rather than argue for the prominence of one over the other, the goal is to help the reader gain a rich understanding of how both might work together to create a new discourse that ultimately creates new knowledge. Talking Texts: Provides historical background for the study of talk and text Presents examples of children’s and adolescents’ natural conversations as analyzed by linguists Addresses talk as it interfaces with domains of knowledge taught in schools to show how talk is related to and may be influenced by the structure, language, and activities of a specific discipline. Bringing together seminal lines of research to create a cohesive picture of discourse issues germane to classrooms and other learning settings, this volume is an essential resource for researchers, graduate students, classroom teachers, and curriculum specialists across the fields of discourse studies, literacy and English education, composition studies, language development, sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics.

Book Indirect and Direct Aggression

Download or read book Indirect and Direct Aggression written by Karin Österman and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indirect and Direct Aggression consists of 24 chapters written by distinguished scholars within the field of aggression research, covering indirect aggression, bullying in schools, adult bullying, and societal and biological aspects of aggression. Indirect aggression is the most typical form of aggression used by women in most cultures. It is an aggressive strategy that is carried out by means of social manipulation that enables the perpetrator to go unnoticed and thereby escape retaliation. Knowledge about indirect aggression and its mechanisms is crucial for all anti-bullying efforts, among children and adults alike. Although briefly covered in early research on human aggression, the study of indirect aggression originates, beginning from the mid-1980s, from a research group in Finland, lead by Professor Kaj Björkqvist of Åbo Akademi University. The book can be used as a textbook at university level.
