Book excerpt: A kidnapping in the depths of the Colombian jungle. A genie with an agenda. And a rescue mission gone awry. Grace has used two of her three wishes from an ancient genie she stumbled across in an antique shop. Despite these "wishes," her life hasn’t turned out as planned. Now, she's casting her final wish—an adventure to surpass all her adventures and help her forget the loss she's suffered. But there's a reason people say 'be careful what you wish for.’ Constance is a ghost who's been portraying a genie and "granting wishes" for millennia. But her ability to see the future and gain a favorable outcome has brought heartbreaking results for Grace. Determined to bring Grace both an adventure and a second chance at happiness, Constance leads Grace into the bowels of the Colombian jungle. And into danger the genie hadn’t predicted. Wade was photographing the Amazon rainforest in hopes of using them to boost awareness about the fires, when en route back home, a Colombian detour lands him in the pit of guerrilla fighters who intend to squeeze ransom money out of him. The rescue attempt by Grace and her genie sidekick falters, leaving Wade to wonder who’s rescuing whom and if they’ll escape the jungle alive. From award-winning author CB Samet comes a delightful series of stand-alone novellas rich with romantic suspense, a touch of the supernatural, and a heart-warming happily-ever-afters. The Romancing the Spirit Series are clean romance tales that can be enjoyed in any order. *** “Completely entertaining, action-packed, and humor expertly infused into the short but wonderful read.” — Bookbub Reviewer “I have read all of the books in this series and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them and this one is no exception. At [the] heart all of these books are romantic suspense stories but there is always a paranormal twist that makes them a great fun read.” —Bookbub Reviewer “I thought Gracelynn and Wade's story was a hoot. It had action, adventure, and a "genie".... The story was a bit different in a good way and widely entertaining and easy to get sucked into to see how it would end. Loved the mix of romance and paranormal.” —Bookbub Reviewers

Book The Twittering Machine

Download or read book The Twittering Machine written by Richard Seymour and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant probe into the political and psychological effects of our changing relationship with social media Former social media executives tell us that the system is an addiction-machine. We are users, waiting for our next hit as we like, comment and share. We write to the machine as individuals, but it responds by aggregating our fantasies, desires and frailties into data, and returning them to us as a commodity experience. The Twittering Machine is an unflinching view into the calamities of digital life: the circus of online trolling, flourishing alt-right subcultures, pervasive corporate surveillance, and the virtual data mines of Facebook and Google where we spend considerable portions of our free time. In this polemical tour de force, Richard Seymour shows how the digital world is changing the ways we speak, write, and think. Through journalism, psychoanalytic reflection and insights from users, developers, security experts and others, Seymour probes the human side of the machine, asking what we’re getting out of it, and what we’re getting into. Social media held out the promise that we could make our own history–to what extent did we choose the nightmare that it has become?

Book Cybercrime and its victims

Download or read book Cybercrime and its victims written by Elena Martellozzo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last twenty years have seen an explosion in the development of information technology, to the point that people spend a major portion of waking life in online spaces. While there are enormous benefits associated with this technology, there are also risks that can affect the most vulnerable in our society but also the most confident. Cybercrime and its victims explores the social construction of violence and victimisation in online spaces and brings together scholars from many areas of inquiry, including criminology, sociology, and cultural, media, and gender studies. The book is organised thematically into five parts. Part one addresses some broad conceptual and theoretical issues. Part two is concerned with issues relating to sexual violence, abuse, and exploitation, as well as to sexual expression online. Part three addresses issues related to race and culture. Part four addresses concerns around cyberbullying and online suicide, grouped together as ‘social violence’. The final part argues that victims of cybercrime are, in general, neglected and not receiving the recognition and support they need and deserve. It concludes that in the volatile and complex world of cyberspace continued awareness-raising is essential for bringing attention to the plight of victims. It also argues that there needs to be more support of all kinds for victims, as well as an increase in the exposure and punishment of perpetrators. Drawing on a range of pressing contemporary issues such as online grooming, sexting, cyber-hate, cyber-bulling and online radicalization, this book examines how cyberspace makes us more vulnerable to crime and violence, how it gives rise to new forms of surveillance and social control and how cybercrime can be prevented.
