Book Grace Overwhelming

Download or read book Grace Overwhelming written by Anne Dunan-Page and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded the 2007 National Research Prize SAES/AEFA. This study is a reappraisal of John Bunyan in the light of the dissenting religious culture of the late-seventeenth century. Charges of schism and fanaticism were repeatedly levelled against Bunyan, both from within the dissenting community and without, but far from being chastened by these accusations, Bunyan responded with a religious discourse marked by a rhetoric of excess. The focus of this book is therefore upon Bunyan's overwhelming spiritual experiences, especially the representation of torment, in his literary and polemical works. The believers' suffering was an obsessive concern of dissenting ministers, even to the point where their writings are often remembered today for little else. Hitherto, most scholars have termed all the mental states that they invoke 'despair', but this simplifies the experiences at issue. A wealth of contemporary material helps to restore the nuances of seventeenth-century physical and spiritual conditions, from enthusiasm to melancholy and madness; from fear to desertion and sloth. These chapters explore fresh ways in which this subtle typology of torment and its extreme manifestations form the core of the literary expression of Restoration dissent, challenging Bunyan to represent spiritual equilibrium as the ultimate quest of the earthly pilgrimage.

Book Overcoming the Overwhelming

Download or read book Overcoming the Overwhelming written by C. D. Hildebrand and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many challenges we face in life that have simple solutions. Others might take a greater effort, but eventually, we are successful. However, sometimes we experience difficulties that seem beyond our own abilities to overcome. After perhaps years of trying to improve without making any permanent progress, it is easy to feel discouraged and overwhelmed. It is perplexing to us when we observe that in other areas of our lives we are living victoriously. We might be doing very well in business and relationships and appear to everyone that we "have it all together." Yet, in other facets of our lives, we are still experiencing frustration and defeat. As the title of the book implies, in order to overcome the overwhelming, we must have faith in God, but how do we find new faith-a faith that will finally help us move "this" mountain? Jesus said that knowing the truth will set us free. So, first of all, we need to discover what the truth is, especially as it pertains to our overwhelming circumstance. Next, we need to face head-on any thought that is negating the truth or causing us to doubt God's goodness and His loving grace toward us. Then, we simply allow ourselves to believe that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do, not allowing anything to prevent us from receiving what He has provided. Set before you in this book is a 40-Day feast of truth that is shared with the objective of setting you free to believe fully in God's kind intentions toward us and receive the victory Jesus won for us. I hope you will be inspired to take this journey toward rediscovering faith in God so that you will finally overcome the overwhelming. Sincerely in Christ, C. D. Hildebrand"

Book Baptist Women s Writings in Revolutionary Culture 1640 1680

Download or read book Baptist Women s Writings in Revolutionary Culture 1640 1680 written by Rachel Adcock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although literary-historical studies have often focused on the range of dissenting religious groups and writers that flourished during the English Revolution, they have rarely had much to say about seventeenth-century Baptists, or, indeed, Baptist women. Baptist Women’s Writings in Revolutionary Culture, 1640-1680 fills that gap, exploring how female Baptists played a crucial role in the group’s formation and growth during the 1640s and 50s, by their active participation in religious and political debate, and their desire to evangelise their followers. The study significantly challenges the idea that women, as members of these congregations, were unable to write with any kind of textual authority because they were often prevented from speaking aloud in church meetings. On the contrary, Adcock shows that Baptist women found their way into print to debate points of church organisation and doctrine, to defend themselves and their congregations, to evangelise others by example and by teaching, and to prophesy, and discusses the rhetorical tactics they utilised in order to demonstrate the value of women’s contributions. In the course of the study, Adcock considers and analyses the writings of little-studied Baptist women, Deborah Huish, Katherine Sutton, and Jane Turner, as well as separatist writers Sara Jones, Susanna Parr, and Anne Venn. She also makes due connection to the more familiar work of Agnes Beaumont, Anna Trapnel, and Anne Wentworth, enabling a reassessment of the significance of those writings by placing them in this wider context. Writings by these female Baptists attracted serious attention, and, as Adcock discusses, some even found a trans-national audience.

Book Having Faith in the Face of Uncertainty

Download or read book Having Faith in the Face of Uncertainty written by Nicholas A. Meade and published by Nicholas A. Meade Ministries. This book was released on 2016-07 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever struggled to hold on to your faith in the midst of uncertain times? Have you wondered if you would lose hope all because you could not see what awaited you on horizon? You are not alone. Life's circumstances have a way of challenging the integrity of our faith. Looking back often strengthens our faith as we remember that we have overcome these seasons of uncertainty. This book, Having Faith in the Face of Uncertainty looks back on the author's period of uncertainty surrounding the premature birth of his son. He reflects on the journey and its uncertainty. In doing so he points out God's work in the process and how he endured in spite of this uncertainty. The purpose of this book is to provide hope for all those who feel their faith slipping away because of the unknown and to encourage others to tell similar stories. Like the author, we all have our faith challenged by uncertain times on occasion but the good news is our faith can survive. "Having Faith in the Face of Uncertainty is a wonderful account of how we can become overconfident in ones’ own faith only for God to expose areas in our lives in need of nourishment, but it also is valuable in exposing the treasure of self-reflection and seeing God’s hand at work when initially it seemed invisible. The human condition is unique to every individual but encouragement can always be drawn from becoming aware of the mental and physical struggles we face. This individual account my husband experienced is a true gem for people of faith, and hopefully it will inspire you to tell your story." -from the foreword by Tanesha R. Meade

Book The Quest for Plausible Christian Discourse in a World of Pluralities

Download or read book The Quest for Plausible Christian Discourse in a World of Pluralities written by Younhee Kim and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines David Tracy's well-known methodology of fundamental theology, namely his revisionist model as developed in his Blessed Rage for Order (1975), together with his methodological shifts through the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. It explores how successful he has been in constructing a methodology for the public theological discourse that he deems so necessary. More particularly, this book asks how serviceable this methodology is for articulating Christian discourse in an intelligible and public way in the contemporary context of religious plurality.

Book The Religious Culture of the Huguenots 1660 1750

Download or read book The Religious Culture of the Huguenots 1660 1750 written by Anne Dunan-Page and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed a revival of interest in the history of the Huguenots, and new research has increased our understanding of their role in shaping the early-modern world. Yet while much has been written about the Huguenots during the sixteenth-century wars of religion, much less is known about their history in the following centuries. The ten essays in this collection provide the first broad overview of Huguenot religious culture from the Restoration of Charles II to the outbreak of the French Revolution. Dealing primarily with the experiences of Huguenots in England and Ireland, the volume explores issues of conformity and nonconformity, the perceptions of 'refuge', and Huguenot attitudes towards education, social reform and religious tolerance. Taken together they offer the most comprehensive and up-to-date survey of Huguenot religious identity in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
