Book excerpt: Grace Harlowe With the American Army on the Rhine is the sixth and final entry in the hard-to-find Grace Harlowe Overseas series originally published in 1920. These books continue the adventures of the heroine of the High School Girls series and the College Girls series published from 1910 to 1917. In this entry, the armistice has been signed and the Great War has ended, but there are spies among the American Third Army troops marching to the Rhine. Grace Harlowe, once an ambulance driver on the Western Front, is now an army welfare worker and immediately runs afoul of her new supervisor. She also has her suspicions about the surrendering Hun, and soon finds herself on the wrong side of the Rhine in enemy territory. "Many war books fail to interest girl readers because they do not describe the Great War from a girl's point of view. But it is quite certain that every healthy girl reader will be enthused with the description of the Great War . . . These books give intimate descriptions of conditions found in France by the many young American girls and women who were there to serve their country by aiding the American fighting forces." --"War Books for Girls," Primary Education, June 1920. The Grace Harlowe Overseas series: 1. Grace Harlowe Overseas 2. Grace Harlowe With the Red Cross in France 3. Grace Harlowe With the Marines at Chateau Thierry 4. Grace Harlowe With the U.S. Troops in the Argonne 5. Grace Harlowe With the Yankee Shock Boys at St. Quentin 6. Grace Harlowe With the American Army on the Rhine

Book excerpt: In 'Grace Harlowe with the American Army on the Rhine' by Josephine Chase, readers are transported into the world of Grace Harlowe, a young woman who finds herself in the midst of World War I as part of the American Army on the Rhine. The book is written in a clear and engaging style, offering a mix of adventure, romance, and historical context. Chase skillfully weaves together a gripping narrative with vivid descriptions of the wartime setting, making the reader feel as if they are right alongside Grace in her experiences. This book is a prime example of early 20th-century American literature, showcasing themes of patriotism, courage, and the impact of war on individuals. Grace Harlowe serves as a strong female protagonist, defying gender norms of her time and embodying the spirit of resilience. Josephine Chase's personal experiences as a nurse during World War I likely influenced her writing, adding depth and authenticity to the story. I highly recommend 'Grace Harlowe with the American Army on the Rhine' to readers interested in historical fiction, female protagonists, and compelling wartime narratives.

Book Girls to the Rescue

Download or read book Girls to the Rescue written by Emily Hamilton-Honey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, as young men journeyed overseas to battle, American women maintained the home front by knitting, fundraising, and conserving supplies. These became daily chores for young girls, but many longed to be part of a larger, more glorious war effort--and some were. A new genre of young adult books entered the market, written specifically with the young girls of the war period in mind and demonstrating the wartime activities of women and girls all over the world. Through fiction, girls could catch spies, cross battlefields, man machine guns, and blow up bridges. These adventurous heroines were contemporary feminist role models, creating avenues of leadership for women and inspiring individualism and self-discovery. The work presented here analyzes the powerful messages in such literature, how it created awareness and grappled with the engagement of real girls in the United States and Allied war effort, and how it reflects their contemporaries' awareness of girls' importance.

Book British and American School Stories 1910 1960

Download or read book British and American School Stories 1910 1960 written by Nancy G. Rosoff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-25 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines school and college fiction for girls in Britain and the United States, written in the first half of the twentieth century, to explore the formation and ideologies of feminine identity. Nancy G. Rosoff and Stephanie Spencer develop a transnational framework that recognises how both constructed and essential femininities transcend national boundaries. The book discusses the significance and performance of female friendship across time and place, which is central to the development of the genre, and how it functioned as an important means of informal education. Stories by Jessie Graham Flower, Pauline Lester, Alice Ross Colver, Elinor Brent-Dyer, and Dorita Fairlie Bruce are set within their historical context and then used to explore aspects of sociability, authority, responsibility, domesticity, and possibility. The distinctiveness of this book stems from the historical analysis of these sources, which have so far primarily been treated by literary scholars within their national context. Winner of the History of Education Society Anne Bloomfield Prize for the best book on history of education published in English 2017-19

Book Turning the Pages of American Girlhood

Download or read book Turning the Pages of American Girlhood written by Emily Hamilton-Honey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternating chapters of historical background and literary analysis, this study argues that postbellum series books inspired young women by illustrating the ways in which girls could participate in social change, whether through church societies, benevolent organizations, educational institutions or political groups. By 1900, however, the socialization of series heroines had shifted to the consumer marketplace, where girls could develop personality and taste through their purchases. Both models had benefits: Religious faith and political activism gave young women moral power within their communities; consuming gave them opportunities to indulge individual desires and often to socialize in public without adult oversight. This work adds to the existing scholarship on girls' culture not only by examining the beginnings of series fiction for girls and the models of womanhood it presented but also by tracing the shifting social ideologies of girlhood throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
