Book excerpt: On any given night, more than half a million Americans and Canadians find themselves sleeping on the streets, in shelters, cars, and other places not meant for human habitation. Yet as this crisis continues to grow, it remains one of the least talked about—especially in churches. Even where compassion and empathy exist, the complexities around homelessness can make us feel stuck, overwhelmed, or numb to the existence of unhoused people in our cities and neighborhoods. Reporting back from his work in homeless services, minister and advocate Kevin Nye introduces readers to the Christ he’s met in tents, shelters, and drop-in centers. He demystifies homelessness by journeying into complex issues like affordable housing, mental illness, addiction, and more, while reimagining our theological approach to these matters and educating us on how they intersect with homelessness. This thorough and intimate book shows us that from the margins, Jesus has something to teach us all about grace—something that could change the landscape of homelessness entirely if we’re ready to hear it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades or so have seen a marked resurgence of interest in natural law thought, a movement in which Russell Hittinger has been a major figure. The First Grace: Rediscovering the Natural Law in a Post-Christian World reveals the power and subtlety of Hittinger's philosophical work and cultural criticism. Whether discussing the nature of liberalism, the constitutional and moral problems posed by judicial usurpation, or the dangers of technology, Hittinger convincingly demonstrates that in our post-Christian world it is more crucial than ever that we recover older, wiser notions of the concepts of freedom and law - and that we see that to place these two concepts in opposition is to misunderstand both profoundly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No matter what you are going through, brethren keep trusting God and run away from any fast lane that the devil may open for anyone that is desperate and vulnerable. Whenever you are desperate, you become vulnerable to the devil and his agents. They can lure you into all manner of evil means of getting what you think you want but they are not what you need. Desperation is not always godly, it is filled with foolishness because, in desperation, you cannot think straight. So, whatever God did not give us when we are going through challenges in life are not what we needed. One thing is sure, at whatever time we are in any challenge in life, God is with us and He wants us to stand strong and stand in righteousness. We cannot fight or face any challenge with evil or ungodly means. The best way for God's children to fight any challenge is godliness and confidence in Christ Jesus. His grace is sufficient indeed. I trust that the messages in this book will go along to add value to your Christian faith.

Book God s Grace for Graham

Download or read book God s Grace for Graham written by Mary Ferguson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mother's heart races so quickly, she feels as if it could jump right out of her chest. A few scant moments earlier, she had been completely at peace with God. It only took a sudden phone call that particular Sunday evening to shatter her peacetime. Her son, Graham, had been in a horrific automobile accident. EMS suspected multiple brain injuries. This high school senior, known for his friendliness, popularity and activities in his church, faced a dim future. Her son's coma lasted for weeks, with Mom by his side as much as allowed. The doctors had warned that her son's life was not looking hopeful. One day, Graham's mother noticed his toes were moving. The physicians said it was an involuntary move and it meant nothing, but don't ever tell a parent her child doesn't know what he is doing. After some time, it was obvious, he did understand. God can take us from our lowest point to our highest, and He certainly has done that for Graham and his family and friends. He was told to go home and watch television and not worry about continuing his education. These words were just what he needed to be determined to finish school. This story includes his trials and triumphs through education and family tragedies. His life is an inspiration to those who feel God has forgotten them or life has beaten them down. God is good all the time./p>

Book Grace Saves All

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

  • ISBN : 1532650884
  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Grace Saves All written by David Artman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace is amazing. About this all Christians agree. Yet nearly all forms of Christianity put significant limits on grace. Those forms of Christianity which proclaim grace alone actually saves typically don’t believe God gives grace to everyone; while those forms of Christianity which proclaim God gives grace to everyone typically don’t believe grace alone actually saves. Must grace either be that which saves alone but doesn’t go to all, or that which goes to all but doesn’t save alone? In Grace Saves All, David Artman argues that grace saves alone and goes to all. This inclusive approach to Christianity is variously called universal reconciliation, universal salvation, or perhaps most accurately, Christian universalism. He contends that the inclusive/Christian universalist approach is necessary because it offers the only Christian theology which successfully defends the goodness of God. For it logically follows that if God is all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful, then God must also be all-saving. Often dismissed as a modern feel-good theology, Christian universalism is an ancient, orthodox, and biblical theology which was expounded by early Christians and early church fathers. Artman brings much deserved attention to this wonderful spirituality.

Book Comic Grace

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Combs
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2013-07-26
  • ISBN : 1443850993
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Comic Grace written by James Combs and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comic Grace is Comb’s third book on the movies for Cambridge Scholars Publishing. These books hardly form a trilogy, but they do express a pragmatic interest of the author; namely, the aspects of movies that we have not adequately studied. More specifically, the first, Movie Time, examines the inadequately understood temporal appearance of movies, in movies set in the past, the present, and the future, attempting to make sense of such questions as to why certain past periods still fascinate, how an emergent present is accompanied by cinematic treatment, and what kind of futures we like to speculate about by watching alternative futures on film. This temporal interest was complemented in the second book, Wit’s End by examination of qualitative interest, discussing how and why certain movies come to be regarded and remembered by the movie culture as great and memorable. Even though there is obviously no unanimous agreement on which movies are “canonical”, there is enough consensus among those who study and value films for us to constitute inquiry into why some films are thought great. This third book in this sustained inquiry poses the question of not only why we think some movie comedies are great, but also what is unique and enduring in the legacy of comedy on film. The book looks at comedy with humane interest, entertaining the proposition that comedy may well be motion picture’s greatest achievement. If so, then it behooves inquirers to understand what movie audiences enjoy and cherish about movie comedy, and what it is about the film medium that so adequately communicates the comedic across such vast audiences and why they never tire of certain kinds of comedy. These interests will inspire students of the remarkable medium of film to inquire further into not only these questions, but also others that they find interesting and illuminating about the film experience.
