Book Malta Origins of Mediterranean Civilization

Download or read book Malta Origins of Mediterranean Civilization written by Luigi Maria Ugolini and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini (1895 - 1936) visited Malta on several occasions between 1924 and 1935 to study the megalithic monuments of the archipelago. An able photographer and acute observer, in the course of his work Ugolini gathered together a large number of photographs, illustrations, notes, and reports dedicated to the prehistoric temples and the archaeological objects found within. The Italian scholar wanted to prove in an unequivocal manner the neolithic date of the megalithic temples of Malta and to assert the important role that Malta had in giving birth to Mediterranean civilization ('ex Medio lux'). The work of Ugolini was interrupted by his sudden death that occurred just before the publication of the series of volumes ('Malta Antica') which he had planned. The main theories of the Italian archaeologist were put forth in 1934 in the volume Malta. Origine della civiltà mediterranea. The monograph represents a seminal part of Ugolini's archaeological thought and is a necessary premise to the final publication of his precious archive. Held in Rome at the Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico 'Luigi Pigorini', the archive has been re-discovered thanks to a collaborative Italo-Maltese project and will be published shortly by Midsea Books. The text of Malta. Origine della civiltà mediterranea is here being re-published together with an English translation and is preceded by an comprehensive introduction that allows the reader to place Ugolini's work in the context of the tormented political scenario of the time. Published with the support of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry for Culture, Malta.

Book Warm Temperate Deciduous Forests around the Northern Hemisphere

Download or read book Warm Temperate Deciduous Forests around the Northern Hemisphere written by Elgene O. Box and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warm-temperate deciduous forests are "southern", mainly oak-dominated deciduous forests, as found over the warmer southern parts of the temperate deciduous forest regions of East Asia, Europe and eastern North America. Climatic analysis has shown that these forests extend from typical temperate climates to well into the warm-temperate zone, in areas where winters are a bit too cold for the ‘zonal’ evergreen broad-leaved forests normally expected in that climatic zone. This book is the first to recognize and describe these southern deciduous forests as an alternative to the evergreen forests of the warm-temperate zone. This warm-temperate zone will become more important under global warming, since it represents the contested transition between deciduous and evergreen forests and between tropical and temperate floristic elements. This book is dedicated to the memory of Tatsuō Kira, the imaginative Japanese ecologist who first noticed and described this general zonation exception and who proposed the name warm-temperate deciduous forest.

Book The Hospitallers the Mediterranean and Europe

Download or read book The Hospitallers the Mediterranean and Europe written by Nikolas Jaspert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern study of the Hospitallers, of other military-religious orders, and of their activities both in the Mediterranean and in Europe has been deeply influenced by the work of Anthony Luttrell. To mark his 75th birthday in October 2007 twenty-three colleagues from ten different countries have contributed to this volume. The first section focuses on the crusading period in the Holy Land, considering the Hospital in Jerusalem, relations with the Assassins, finances, indulgences, transportation and the careers of the brothers and knights. The second and third sections move to the later Middle Ages, when the Hospitallers had their centre on Rhodes, and military and charitable activities in the East had to be supported with men and money from the West. The papers in the second section consider the Hospitallers on Rhodes, relations between Rhodes and the West and plans for crusades, while the third section includes papers on the Hospitallers in the Iberian Peninsula and in Hungary, the territorial administration of the Order of Montesa in Valencia, a plan to transfer the headquarters of the Teutonic Order from Prussia to Frisia, and a Hospitaller reconsideration of warfare and learning on the eve of the council of Trent. The final paper proposes new definitions and guidelines for future work on the military-religious orders. The authors include both well-known experts and younger scholars who promise to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Luttrell and to continue research into the Hospitallers and their fellow orders, these peculiar European communities avant la lettre.

Book The Royal Society and the Discovery of the Two Sicilies

Download or read book The Royal Society and the Discovery of the Two Sicilies written by Manuela D’Amore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates a lesser-known aspect of the British history of travel in the Enlightenment: that of the Royal Society’s special contribution to the “discovery” of the south of Italy in the age of the Grand Tour. By exploring primary source journal entries of philosophy and travel, the book provides evidence of how the Society helped raise the Fellows’ curiosity about the Mediterranean and encouraged travel to the region by promoting cultural events there and establishing fruitful relations with major Italian academic institutions. They were especially devoted to revealing the natural and artistic riches of the Bourbon Kingdom from 1738 to 1780, during which the Roman city of Herculaneum was discovered and Vesuvius and Etna were actively eruptive. Through these examples, the book draws attention to the role that the Royal Society played in establishing cultural networks in Italy and beyond. Tracing a complex path starting in Restoration times, this new insight into discourse on learned travel contributes to a more challenging vision of Anglo-Italian relations in the Enlightenment.
