Book International Handbook of Educational Policy

Download or read book International Handbook of Educational Policy written by Nina Bascia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-14 with total page 1129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nina Bascia, Alister Cumming, Amanda Datnow, Kenneth Leithwood and David Livingstone This Handbook presents contemporary and emergent trends in educational policy research, in over ?fty chapters written by nearly ninety leading researchers from a number of countries. It is organized into ?ve broad sections which capture many of the current dominant educational policy foci and at the same time situate current understandings historically, in terms of both how they are conceptualized and in terms of past policy practice. The chapters themselves are empirically grounded, providing illustrations of the conceptual implications c- tained within them as well as allowing for comparisons across them. The se- re?exivity within chapters with respect to jurisdictional particularities and c- trasts allows readers to consider not only a range of approaches to policy analysis but also the ways in which policies and policy ideas play out in di?erent times and places. The sections move from a focus on prevailing policy tendencies through increasingly critical and ‘‘outsider’’ perspectives on policy. They address, in turn, the contemporary strategic emphasis on large-scale reform; substantive emphases at several levels – on leadership and governance, improving teacher quality and conceptualizing learning in various domains around the notion of literacies and concluding, ?nally, with a contrasting topic, workplace learning, which has had less policy attention and thus allows readers to consider both the advantages and disadvantages of learning and teaching under the bright gaze of policy.

Book Comparative Higher Education Politics

Download or read book Comparative Higher Education Politics written by Jens Jungblut and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of the state of the art of research on the politics of higher education policy in Canada, the US, and Western Europe. Each thematic chapter combines an extensive literature review with original empirical work that further advances our understanding of policymaking dynamics in higher education. The book covers five key aspects of policymaking, namely the politics of governance as well as funding reforms, the role of interest groups, policy diffusion, and policy framing. These aspects are explored using a unique comparative design that combines comparisons within as well as between regions, and among the five key aspects of policymaking. The conceptual framework is anchored in approaches from institutional theory, namely sociological and historical institutionalism. “This rare book coherently focuses on the same critical challenges that higher education faces in a changing global and national environment. These include vital governance and finance issues and how these are framed and contested by different organizations and interest groups as well as state actors. Within a broad institutionalist framework that reflects the tensions between historical university and national legacies on the one hand and regional and global influences on the other, the authors focus on policymaking in Western Europe, Canada, and the US. This is an engaging and creative endeavor, a must-read for scholars and policymakers alike.” Francisco O. Ramirez, Graduate School of Education Stanford University “This is a real achievement that will contribute to the development of research in politics of higher education policy, finance, and economic development. It is timely in an era when higher learning is increasingly salient to national policy, interest groups, and supranational bodies such as the EU. The focus on Canada, the US, and Europe frames a comparative approach to a competitive higher educational policy arena that has not received systematic study." Sheila Slaughter, Louise McBee Institute of Higher Education, University of Georgia “This fills a gaping hole in research on the politics of higher education. In bringing together research perspectives from governance studies with comparative public policy as well as scholars from Europe and Northern America, this volume will serve as an important reference point for a rapidly growing research field. The exceptionally high quality of editorship is documented by the fact that the chapters are convincingly subsumed under five sub-themes. In short: A must-read for any researcher and student interested in understanding the political foundations of higher education.” Marius R. Busemeyer, Department of Politics and Public Administration, University of Konstanz

Download or read book Change and Legitimation written by Anett Schenk and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education has become a mega-topic in both political and scientific debate. Developments in systems of higher education and changes in the governance of this field have been discussed in the literature. Such changes are brought about by collective actors within institutional settings. The present volume directs attention at Social Democratic governments in Sweden and in Germany, specifically in North-Rhine Westphalia in the latter case, and at the policies of higher education they have enacted from the mid-1960s to the year 2000. The empirical basis for this study is a qualitative analysis of such policy documents as inaugural speeches, governmental bills and recommendations of expert groups. The focus of the policies has shifted during the decades that were analysed from an input- to an output-orientation and from addressing issues of class to addressing those of gender segregation. These shifts are discussed against the background of a governmentís need for legitimation and the impact of intermediate actors on policy development.

Book Public Vices Private Virtues Assessing the Effects of Marketization in Higher Education

Download or read book Public Vices Private Virtues Assessing the Effects of Marketization in Higher Education written by Pedro N. Teixeira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen the strengthening of a discourse that emphasises the virtues of markets, competition and private initiative, vis-à-vis the vices of public intervention in higher education. This volume presents a timely reflection about the effects this increasing marketization has been producing in many higher education systems worldwide. The various chapters of this volume analyse the impact of markets at the system level, with significant attention being devoted to the changes in modes of regulation, the strengthening of aspects such as privatization and inter-institutional competition in higher education systems, and the closer interaction between higher education and its economic environment. Several of the contributors devote attention as well to the implications of market forces for institutional change, notably regarding issues such as mission, organizational structure and governance and the way marketization is affecting the internal distribution of power and the definition of priorities. Finally, the volume includes several chapters focusing on the different markets of higher education, such as the academic labour market, undergraduate and postgraduate education, and research markets. Altogether these chapters provide important insights concerning the many national and institutional contexts in which the marketization of higher education has been taking place around the world.

Book Higher Education Policy An International Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Higher Education Policy An International Comparative Perspective written by F. Kaiser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous changes are affecting the structure and funding of higher education in many countries. This volume attempts to identify and analyze the principles, structural features and modes of work of the different higher education policies operating in eleven countries, as well as their commonalities and differences in the light of both general international trends and country-specific factors. In order to gather the relevant information for the project, national correspondents were provided with an overarching framework to guide them in their work and to ensure maximum comparability of the resulting reports. Each country report is broken down into four sections: the structure and goals of higher education systems; authority in the system; higher education policy; and the impact of each on institutional governance and management. The final chapter draws together the general trends which have emerged: a move towards less state control; a strengthening of institutional autonomy and increased governance; competition between institutions; privatization of funding; greater market orientation and growing institutional accountability for quality and service.
