Book The Government and Politics of France

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government and Politics of France has been the leading textbook on French politics for over a generation, and continues to provide students with a comprehensive and incisive introduction to the intricacies of French politics and government. This edition updates every chapter, with the addition of a new chapter on France and Europe. Recent events necessitate a new edition, particularly the 2002 elections and the growing interpenetration of France and the EU in student programmes, as well as in the real world. Whether covering the shifting balance within France's two-headed executive, the paradoxes of the French party politics, the power and fragmentation of France's administration, the growing assertiveness of French local government, or the newly visible world of the judiciary, The Government and Politics of France has always sought to confront established paradigms with the complex and untidy reality of French politics at the grass roots.

Book The Impact of the Fifth Republic on France

Download or read book The Impact of the Fifth Republic on France written by William G. Andrews and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1984-06-30 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French have searched for five generations through five republics and several other regimes for a stable political system. The Fifth Republic, born in 1958, seems to be succeeding where many others have failed. What are the reasons and conditions for the French consensus on a system of government for the first time since the ancien regime? The first twenty years of the Fifth Republic encompass four presidential elections, alternating political control of the National Assembly, and years of rapid economic growth and contraction. Thus a variety of events now allow an evaluation of the efficacy of the Fifth Republic. The chapters of this book examine: the governmental framework and various political groups that have vied for control of it; industrial development and modernization; education and culture; and foreign policy. Containing both favorable and critical assessments, the book provides a comprehensive balance sheet on the Fifth Republic and the influence of Charles DeGaulle.

Book Government and Politics of France

Download or read book Government and Politics of France written by Edward McChesney Sait and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government and Politics of France Of all the great powers engaged in the late war, the Republic of France had to sustain the heaviest burden. Her richest territories were occupied by the invader; unparalleled sacrifices were imposed upon the whole people. The government, though formerly much criticized by foreign observers and by Frenchmen themselves, passed through the ordeal triumphantly; and students of government are manifesting a new interest in this parliamentary system, with its highly centralized administrative organization, which has proved so capable of adjusting itself to grave emergencies. This volume by Professor Sait is the only work in English that describes the structure and practical working of the French government of today; for the textbooks hitherto used in our colleges were published a quarter of a century ago and have not been adequately revised. Much has happened in that quarter of a century. In certain directions French institutions have been profoundly modified, even transformed. For example, the party system, with its annual delegate conventions and its hierarchy of committees, has gradually taken form in the past fifteen or twenty years. Book The Birth of Judicial Politics in France

Download or read book The Birth of Judicial Politics in France written by Alec Stone Sweet and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Constitutional Council, a quasi-judicial body created at the dawn of the Fifth Republic, functioned in relative obscurity for almost two decades until its emergence in the 1980s as a pivotal actor in the French policymaking process. Alec Stone focuses on how this once docile institution, through its practice of constitutional review, has become a meaningfully autonomous actor in the French political system. After examining the formal prohibition against judicial review in France, Stone illustrates how politicians and the Council have collaborated over the course of the last decade, often unintentionally and in the service of contradictory agendas, to significantly enhance Council's power. While the Council came to function as a third house of Parliament, the legislative work of the government and Parliament was meaningfully "juridicized." Through a discussion of broad theoretical issues, Stone then expands the scope of his analysis to the politics of constitutional review in Germany, Spain, and Austria.
