Book Small Arms Crime and Conflict

Download or read book Small Arms Crime and Conflict written by Owen Greene and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the use of small arms in violence and attempts by the state to govern the use and acquisition of these weapons. It is likely that hundreds of thousands of people are killed every year as a result of armed violence – in contexts ranging from war zones to domestic violence. This edited volume examines why these deaths occur, the role of guns and other weapons, and how governance can be used to reduce and prevent those deaths. Drawing on a variety of disciplines, ranging from anthropology through economics to peace and security studies, the book’s main concern throughout is that of human security – the causes and means of prevention of armed violence. The first part of the book concerns warfare, the second armed violence and crime, and the last governance of arms and their (mis)-use. The concluding chapter builds on the contributors’ key findings and suggests priorities for future research, with the aim of forming a coherent narrative which examines what we know, why armed violence occurs, and what can be done to reduce it. This book will be of much interest to students of small arms, security studies, global governance, peace and conflict studies, and IR.

Download or read book The Right to Bear Arms written by Stephen P. Halbrook and published by Bombardier Books. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized the individual right to keep and bear arms, but courts in states that have extreme gun control restrictions apply tests that balance the right away. This book demonstrates that the right peaceably to carry firearms is a fundamental right recognized by the text of the Second Amendment and is part of our American history and tradition. Halbrook’s scholarly work is an exhaustive historical treatment of the fundamental, individual right to carry firearms outside of the home. Halbrook traces this right from its origins in England through American colonial times, the American Revolution, the Constitution’s ratification debates, and then through the antebellum and post-bellum periods, including the history surrounding the enactment of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This book is another important contribution by Halbrook to the scholarship concerning the text, history and tradition of the Second Amendment’s right to bear and carry arms.

Book Governance and the Three Arms of Government in Sierra Leone

Download or read book Governance and the Three Arms of Government in Sierra Leone written by Abubakar Hassan Kargbo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book titled Governance and the Three Arms of Government in Sierra Leone seeks to critically analyse the three arms of government in Sierra Leone in terms of their adherence to democratic principles and best international practices since independence. The challenges governance institution have been facing are discussed and recommendation made . The book also emphasized that despite the fact that the three arms of government inherited by the state of Sierra Leone at independence, it could be argued that the state of Sierra Leone has enormous tasks to perform in all the facets of the body politic; especially in the area of putting the necessary structures and institutions not only to complement the three organs but to promote better governance of the state of Sierra Leone. . Perhaps any government of Sierra Leone cannot only rely on the fact that it was democratically elected but has to deliver services efficiently and effectively to the public. It is argued therefore that for this all important reason it is not only incumbent on government to put in place the necessary institutions and structures but also the formulation of policies that will help facilitate the governance process. These institutions and structures when established and policies implemented against the backdrop of adequate resources will contribute positively to laying down the foundation of democratic good governance in the country. It contains three main chapters on legislative, executive and judicial arms of government and a conclusion.

Book Norm Dynamics in Multilateral Arms Control

Download or read book Norm Dynamics in Multilateral Arms Control written by Harald Müller and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprehensively covers a range of issues related to dynamic norm change in the current major international arms control regimes related to nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons; small arms and light weapons; cluster munitions; and antipersonnel mines. Arms control policies of all of the key established and rising state actors are considered, as well as those of nonaligned countries, nongovernmental organizations, and international governing bodies. Recent studies on multilateral arms control tend to focus mostly on "structure," by which opportunities and constraints for action are created. This volume pays equal attention to "agency," through which opportunities and constraints to produce change or maintain the status quo are handled. In addition-and in greater depth than in recent studies-the volume acknowledges the force of moral and ethical impulses (alongside such factors as political, legal, and technological change) in the evolution of arms control norms. The volume begins with a look at the structure of regimes, at the conflicts residing in these structures, and at the dynamic processes in which these conflicts are worked out. The impact of extrinsic factors on norm dynamics is considered next, including technological change and shifts in attitudes and power structures. Essays on the role of agency in driving norm change conclude the volume, with a particular focus on norm entrepreneurship and the importance of acknowledging the competing justice claims surrounding norm-change efforts. Book Standards for Internal Control in the Federal Government

Download or read book Standards for Internal Control in the Federal Government written by United States Government Accountability Office and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-03-24 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policymakers and program managers are continually seeking ways to improve accountability in achieving an entity's mission. A key factor in improving accountability in achieving an entity's mission is to implement an effective internal control system. An effective internal control system helps an entity adapt to shifting environments, evolving demands, changing risks, and new priorities. As programs change and entities strive to improve operational processes and implement new technology, management continually evaluates its internal control system so that it is effective and updated when necessary. Section 3512 (c) and (d) of Title 31 of the United States Code (commonly known as the Federal Managers? Financial Integrity Act (FMFIA)) requires the Comptroller General to issue standards for internal control in the federal government.

Book The Right to Bear Arms in a Modern America

Download or read book The Right to Bear Arms in a Modern America written by Roosevelt Thoreau and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the U.S. Constitution is brilliant, do all of its 18th-Century notions make sense in a modern world? Specifically, should the right to keep and bear arms apply to today's relentlessly violent society where mentally and emotional disturbed individuals make headlines everyday by killing people in mass with high-powered , modernized weaponry? In an objective way, we explore the original application of the Second Amendment, as well as how the United State's courts have defined it through the years. The original Constitution, which 39 state delegates signed on September 17, 1787, after a four-month long Constitutional Convention, made it clear that any newly formed Federal Government of the United State of America would have limited powers. While the original Constitution expressed the notion of limited power within the Federal Government, it provided few specific rights and liberties for the people. Without these individual rights attached to the Constitution, many state delegates believed that a strong Federal Government could potentially abuse its citizens by denying them basic rights. These delegates, called Anti-Federalists, were led by Virginia's Patrick Henry, who did not sign the original Constitution and demanded a Bill of Rights for the people, refusing to support ratification of the document without amendments attached to it. Reluctantly, the Federalists led by Virginia delegate James Madison, the Father of the Constitution, being its primary writer, and New York delegate Alexander Hamilton agreed to the amendments in order to complete ratification. The Federal Government of the United States under the U.S. Constitution began operation on March 4, 1789, and on September 25, 1789, the first Congress adopted 12 amendments to the Constitution. In 1791, the states ratified 10 of those amendments. Sharing the Second Amendment of the 10 amendments are two ideas that the framers of the Constitution constructed to align with one another, although the specific reason for the alignment is not altogether clear in the eyes of many. The ambiguity of their relationship to one another has created division in the years since ratification. Additionally, the American populace has tested both ideas as separate entities through the years because of the amendments simple phrasing and lack of elaboration. Therefore, interpretations of the amendment are vast, and its place within the context of today's society adds to the complexity of the 27 words that make up Amendment II, which read:"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms and was adopted on December 15, 1791, as part of the first ten amendments contained in the Bill of Rights. The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that the right belongs to individuals, while also ruling that the right is not unlimited and does not prohibit all regulation of either firearms or similar devices. State and local governments are limited to the same extent as the federal government from infringing this right per the incorporation of the Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment was based partially on the right to keep and bear arms in English common law and was influenced by the English Bill of Rights of 1689. Sir William Blackstone described this right as an auxiliary right, supporting the natural rights of self-defense, resistance to oppression, and the civic duty to act in concert in defense of the state. In the twenty-first century, the amendment has been subjected to renewed academic inquiry and judicial interest, and debate between various organizations regarding gun control and gun rights is a daily part of American society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excerpt from the “masterful, timely, data-driven” study of the gun control debate examines the potential of stronger purchasing laws (Choice). As the debate on gun control continues, evidence-based research is needed to answer a crucial question: How do we reduce gun violence? One of the biggest gun policy reforms under consideration is the regulation of firearm sales and stopping the diversion of guns to criminals. This selection from the major anthology of studies Reducing Gun Violence in America presents compelling evidence that stronger purchasing laws and better enforcement of these laws result in lower gun violence. Additional material for this edition includes an introduction by Michael R. Bloomberg and Consensus Recommendations for Reforms to Federal Gun Policies from the Johns Hopkins University.
