Book The Oxford Handbook of Professional Service Firms

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Professional Service Firms written by Laura Empson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades the Professional Service Firm (PSF) sector has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing, profitable, and significant in the global economy. In 2013 the accountancy, management consulting, legal, and architectural sectors alone generated revenues of US$ 1.6 trillion and employed 14 million people. PSFs play an important role in developing human capital, creating innovative business services, reshaping government institutions, establishing and interpreting the rules of financial markets, and setting legal, accounting and other professional standards. The study of PSFs can offer insights into the contemporary challenges facing organizations within the knowledge economy, and deepen understanding of more conventional organizations. Despite their significance, however, PSFs have until recently remained very much in the shadows of organizational and management research. The Oxford Handbook of Professional Service Firms marks the coming of age of PSF scholarship with a comprehensive and integrative exploration of current research and thinking on PSFs, featuring contributions from internationally renowned scholars in the fields of organizational and management studies. It is divided into three distinct sections - the professions, the firms, and the professionals that work within them - and covers subjects from governance and leadership to regulation, entrepreneurship, and diversity. Bringing together a broad range of empirical and theoretical perspectives, the Handbook offers many potentially important insights into the contemporary challenges of organizations in the knowledge economy and suggests new lines of inquiry that may shed further light on the activities and performance of PSFs and the professionals who work within them.

Drawing on cases studies from around the world, researchers from different disciplines—including sociology, political science, geography, anthropology, history, and management studies—examine how professional service firms have generated power in the policy-making process. The chapters further investigate the structure and organization of these firms and their relationship with public agencies. They discuss the impact of strategies, techniques and models promoted by these firms on political decision-making. And they analyze how these firms have contributed to the formation of global policy-pipelines, facilitating the quick diffusion of policy ideas across time and space. Book Professional Networks in Transnational Governance

Download or read book Professional Networks in Transnational Governance written by Leonard Seabrooke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who controls how transnational issues are defined and treated? In recent decades professional coordination on a range of issues has been elevated to the transnational level. International organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and firms all make efforts to control these issues. This volume shifts focus away from looking at organizations and zooms in on how professional networks exert control in transnational governance. It contributes to research on professions and expertise, policy entrepreneurship, normative emergence, and change. The book provides a framework for understanding how professionals and organizations interact, and uses it to investigate a range of transnational cases. The volume also deploys a strong emphasis on methodological strategies to reveal who controls transnational issues, including network, sequence, field, and ethnographic approaches. Bringing together scholars from economic sociology, international relations, and organization studies, the book integrates insights from across fields to reveal how professionals obtain and manage control over transnational issues.

Book Managing The Professional Service Firm

Download or read book Managing The Professional Service Firm written by David H. Maister and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional service firms differ from other business enterprises in two distinct ways: first they provide highly customised services thus cannot apply many of the management principles developed for product-based industries. Second, professional services are highly personalised, involving the skills of individuals. Such firms must therefore compete not only for clients but also for talented professionals. Drawing on more than ten years of research and consulting to these unique and creative companies, David Maister explores issues ranging from marketing and business development to multinational strategies, human resources policies to profit improvement, strategic planning to effective leadership. While these issues can be complex, Maister simplifies them by recognising that 'every professional service firm in the world, regardless of size, specific profession, or country of operation, has the same mission statement: outstanding service to clients, satisfying careers for its people and financial success for its owners.'

Book Governance in Professional Service Firms

Download or read book Governance in Professional Service Firms written by Alex Brennwald and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to deliver new insights into the field of governance in professional service firms by bringing together and comparing the latest theoretical as well as practical findings and furthermore to provide recommendations for both practitioners and scholars. In order to achieve this goal, this thesis challenges research with practice to equally reflect both perspectives. The conclusions from this paper are the following: Professional service firms definitely benefit from good governance principles. Properly set up governance principles have the potential to resolve critical agency conflicts within the professional partnership and hereby enhances the firm's performance potential. The chosen legal structure has furthermore the potential to strengthen the partnership principle by adequately reflecting the partnership's norms and vision in the legal form. The reversed KISS principle (Hilb, 2005) provides a situational, strategic, integrated, and controlled approach on governance issues and hereby helps to keep the balance between fostering entrepreneurial behaviour and assessing overall risk exposure what furthermore keeps the partnership principle alive.

Book Leadership in professional service firms The case for change

Download or read book Leadership in professional service firms The case for change written by Katja Fischer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of applied sciences, Cologne, course: Master of Business Administration - Soft Skills and Leadership Methods, language: English, abstract: The following assignment consists of a theoretical overview about leadership and the characteristics of professional service firms as well as an analysis of the existing leadership model in professional service firms and the case for change in this topic. Starting with the general definition of leadership, the assignment shows two different leadership models. On the one hand the assignment illustrates the situational leadership developed by Paul Hersey and Kenneth H. Blanchard and on the other hand the full range of leadership models adapted from Bass & Riggio. In the next part the specific characteristics of professional service firms are illustrated, including the governance form and the knowledge as one primary asset. In this part the first theory-praxis transfer is made through analyzing the current leadership model using the situational leadership as well as the full range of leadership models. The characteristics of professional service firms leads in the next chapter which deals with the existing changes and uncertainty in the market and the facing challenges for professional service firms which need to be managed. In this context of change, challenges and the existing talent war leadership is one of the primary factors for the success of these firms. Therefore the theory-praxis transfer is made through the alignment of the illustrated leadership models and the characteristics of professional service firms in relation to the facing challenges. The alignment shows that the existing business model of professional service firm has to change in different components including the organizational structure as well as the common leadership model. Without changing the approach of leadership or even without any leadership professional service firms will lose their talents, carrying their specific knowledge to competitors. The conclusion closed with a recommendation of a leadership model as well as relevant factors for a successful implementation considering the specific governance form of professional service firms especially the powerful position of partners.
