Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gospel Pioneering: Reminiscences of Early Congregationalism in California, 1833-1920 There is one trait Of Doctor Pond which has especially endeared him to many of us, and that is his catholicity and charity of spirit. In the midst of changing conditions and conceptons he has been deeply concerned lest, in the present-day emphasis upon the social gospel, the power of Christ to transform the in dividual should be lost to sight. Yet he has never refused a generous hearing to the honest convictions of another. He has stood resolutely for freedom of thought and utterance, however much the views ex pressed might differ from his own. And when he has stated his own position it has always been in terms as tolerant and full of love as of clarity and force. In this he has shown the mind of Christ. Book Pioneering Spirituality

Download or read book Pioneering Spirituality written by Cathy Ross and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneering ministry sounds like something you do, something active, even something driven. However, prayer and contemplation are at its heart, paying attention to God, to the world and to oneself - a kind of being that goes hand in hand with doing. Pioneering requires a spirituality that will fuel a life lived beyond the borders of the church. In this collection, a range of practitioners explore the inner and outer dimensions of pioneering spirituality. Offering many proven and innovative ideas, they explore what resources, fuels and sustains a life of pioneering mission. What is the spirituality in the UK's wider culture and how do we connect with it appropriately? How might spiritual treasures such as the Eucharist, prayer, pilgrimage, spiritual direction and community rhythms of life be expressed to those with whom pioneers share life? And how might communities of disciples grow and be formed in this pioneering spirituality?

Book Dan Taylor 1738 1816 Baptist Leader and Pioneering Evangelical

Download or read book Dan Taylor 1738 1816 Baptist Leader and Pioneering Evangelical written by Richard T. Pollard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Taylor was a leading English eighteenth-century General Baptist minister and founder of the New Connexion of General Baptists--a revival movement. This book provides considerable new light on the theological thinking of this important evangelical figure. The major themes examined are Taylor's spiritual formation; soteriology; understanding of the atonement; beliefs regarding the means and process of conversion; ecclesiology; approach to baptism, the Lord's Supper, and worship; and missiology. The nature of Taylor's evangelicalism--its central characteristics, underlying tendencies, evidence of the shaping influence of certain Enlightenment values, and ways that it was outworked--reflect that which was distinct about evangelicalism as a movement emerging from the eighteenth-century Evangelical Revival. It is thus especially relevant to recent debates regarding the origins of evangelicalism. Taylor's evangelicalism was particularly marked by its pioneering nature. His propensity for innovation serves as a unifying theme throughout the book, with many of its accompanying patterns of thinking and practical expressions demonstrating that which was distinct about evangelicalism in the eighteenth century.

Days of crisis and turmoil demand a people who are plugged into Heaven's activity. Old operating systems that built empires in the name of Christianity, but created shallow, compromising disciples, are crumbling under the weight of global instability. In the midst of a season of great personal challenge and persecution, author, church leader, and prophet Jeremiah Johnson received fresh blueprints and new prophetic strategies on how to navigate the days of challenge and opportunity ahead. Prophetic Pioneering is a call for you to be part of the radical Jesus People remnant that is arising in this critical hour! This invitation is not exclusive to pastors and ministry leaders; the call to see the coming move of God and build in accordance with the activity of Heaven, is just as relevant in the marketplace as it to the minister. Get ready to: Be a part of the New Jesus People Movement. Pick up the history-making Intercession mantle of prayer general, Rees Howells. Discern how prophets, apostles, evangelists, pastors, and teachers supernaturally reveal different aspects of Jesus. Become a prophetic reformer who changes culture and makes history. Catch a glimpse of the unexpected move of God through the "Queen of Sheba Prophecy." The hour is urgent, dark, and late... but the opportunity to be carriers of prophetic solutions has never been greater. Will you take your place as a prophetic pioneer?

CHAPTER XI THE PACIFIC THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY Its present title is "The Pacific School of Religion," and its resources are sufficient to support a large and very able faculty. It is, like all other educational institutions, in need of more funds and probably always will be as its undertakings increase. And the same spirit which moved us at the outset to propose a Union Seminary sustained by all sorts of truly Christian people, has now, while it is amply endowed and owing no man anything but love, declared the school to be undenominational, and has invited to its Faculty good and able men from among the Baptists, Disciples, and Methodists, and has even elected representatives of these denominations as members of its Board of Trustees. As far back as i858, at the second meeting of our General Association (the previous meetings for fellowship, of which several had been held, not being regarded as large enough to bear a name so dignified), a committee, of which Rev. E. S. Lacy was the chairman, presented a vigorous report on the education of young men for the ministry, the first sentence of which gives the germanent idea of the whole: "The distance stretching between us and the theological institutions of the East renders it necessary that we take measures for rearing a ministry of our own." The measures, however, suggested for meeting this necessity, did not include a seminary all our own. I find in the minutes of the annual meetings of i859 and i860 intense expressions concerning the woeful lack of both churches and pastors in our State, but no action proposed with reference to supplying the need, except by appealing to young men in Eastern seminaries. But the suggestion in Mr. Lacy's report of i858 was like a seed germinating in our hearts, ...

Download or read book The Unfolding Gospel written by John P. Bowen and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many congregations and their leaders are discouraged about the future of the church. John Bowen's conviction is that the solution is to be found not in new programs or strategies but in a recovery of theological vision--that of Jesus and his gospel, which transforms every aspect of life. This vision restores hope in the only way realistically possible._ Words like mission, discipleship, church, evangelism, renewal, and church planting are used like billiard balls--all rolling around a single table, unconnected and bouncing randomly off one another. This book pulls these ideas together into a coherent and organic whole. The gospel is the hermeneutical key for understanding each of these topics and what draws them together. Thus, chapter 1 is an exposition of the gospel (God's determination to make all things new through Jesus Christ). Chapter 2 discusses discipleship (we only understand discipleship in light of the gospel), and chapter 3 covers church (we only understand church if we understand discipleship). Chapter 4 considers culture as the arena in which the gospel is lived and talked about, and chapter 5 builds on that with a discussion of translation, not only as a missional necessity but as a ministry which itself incarnates the nature of the gospel. The remaining chapters (on evangelism, the future of "inherited churches," church planting, and leadership) demonstrate how the gospel is the integration point for all._ The author's hope is that church leaders--evangelical and mainline, young and old, emerging and traditional, present and future--will have a transformative "Aha!" moment as this gospel hypothesis unfolds._
