I gathered people of all ages and walks of life from various small churches, large cathedrals, local organizations, one-on-one solicitation, or anyone who answered an advertisement. With the producer, administration, and a director in place, the last requirement was performers who had a positive mind-set, a humble spirit, and some indication of raw talent. Download or read book Blessed written by Kate Bowler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have millions of American Christians come to measure spiritual progress in terms of their financial status and physical well-being? How has the movement variously called Word of Faith, Health and Wealth, Name It and Claim It, or simply prosperity gospel come to dominate much of our contemporary religious landscape? Kate Bowler's Blessed is the first book to fully explore the origins, unifying themes, and major figures of a burgeoning movement that now claims millions of followers in America. Bowler traces the roots of the prosperity gospel: from the touring mesmerists, metaphysical sages, pentecostal healers, business oracles, and princely prophets of the early 20th century; through mid-century positive thinkers like Norman Vincent Peale and revivalists like Oral Roberts and Kenneth Hagin; to today's hugely successful prosperity preachers. Bowler focuses on such contemporary figures as Creflo Dollar, pastor of Atlanta's 30,000-member World Changers Church International; Joel Osteen, known as "the smiling preacher," with a weekly audience of seven million; T. D. Jakes, named by Time magazine one of America's most influential new religious leaders; Joyce Meyer, evangelist and women's empowerment guru; and many others. At almost any moment, day or night, the American public can tune in to these preachers-on TV, radio, podcasts, and in their megachurches-to hear the message that God desires to bless them with wealth and health. Bowler offers an interpretive framework for scholars and general readers alike to understand the diverse expressions of Christian abundance as a cohesive movement bound by shared understandings and common goals.

Book Jesus on Stage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Oakeshott
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2019-12-27
  • ISBN : 1728397375
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Jesus on Stage written by Philip Oakeshott and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus on Stage argues that the Gospel of John is, in its present form, an ancient historical novel, but that the evangelist’s first version was his own draft for a Greek play. The development of Greek drama at Athens is briefly described, with new suggestions on some details, and the continuing influence of the great Greek tragedians in the 1st Century AD is shown. Then the internal evidence in the gospel which points to an earlier draft play is marshalled: not merely dramatic scenes, some of which echo Sophocles, but speeches only appropriate to the stage, puzzling features which make sense if they were devised with theatrical presentation in mind, others which suggest the chorus of a play; and a drastic reshaping of the Synoptic storyline to centre the whole work on Jerusalem, with a Jesus who resembles the hero of a play. All this has later been expanded to form a novel, including incidents in the ‘mystery and suspense’ tradition beloved by ancient novelists. But the book is not only for scholars; anyone re-examining John’s gospel from this standpoint will find new depths in the evangelist’s seldom historical but deeply spiritual creation.

Book The Gospel at Colonus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lee Breuer
  • Publisher : Theatre Communications Grou
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 9780930452940
  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book The Gospel at Colonus written by Lee Breuer and published by Theatre Communications Grou. This book was released on 1989 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I've been in a lot of shows in my life, and I've thought a lot of 'em were pretty good, but this is a masterpiece." -Morgan Freeman "An ancient drama explodes into a hand-clapping, soul-stirring gospel musical." -Chicago Tribune "One of the most marvelous shows the decade... Colonus is a triumph of reconciliation, bringing together black and white, pagan and Christian, ancient and modern in a sunburst of joy that seems to touch the secret heart of civilization itself." -Jack Kroll, Newsweek Writing at the end of his own long life, in Oedipus at Colonus Sophocles depicted his doomed hero's final hours; at the moment of his death the aged Oedipus is free at last. Envisioning this rarely performed meditation on mortality as a rousing service in a black church, Lee Breuer has created a remarkable text based on Robert Fitzgerald's splendid translation. Rearranging, simplifying, cutting here and enhancing there, Breuer has above all honored the spirit and the poetry of Sophocles's lovely work, giving it a new life in this time and place. Inspired by the joyous faith at the heart of African-American Christianity, Breuer and composer Bob Telson have turned a momentary wish of Sophocles' chorus into a central desire of Oedipus himself. "I wish the wind would lift me," he sings, "so I could look with the eyes of the angels." The fundamental action of The Gospel of Colonus is to "lift him up" - at the hour of Oedipus' death to celebrate his life, to journey through grief to triumphal resurrection. "Man," says lead actor Morgan Freeman, "this is what theatre is all about." Lee Breuer is a founding member of the acclaimed avant-garde company Mabou Mines. He has written and directed many groundbreaking works for theatre including a trilogy of "Animations," A Prelude to Death in Venice and Haji. Sister Suzie Cinema, a cinema collection of his poems and performances, was previously published by TCG. Bob Telson's recent projects include collaborating with Breuer on The Warrior Ant and composing the score for the film Bagdad Café.

Book Varieties of Jesus Mythicism

Download or read book Varieties of Jesus Mythicism written by John W. Loftus and published by Ockham Publishing Group. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 1072 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people on the planet, the existence of Jesus is a given: “Of course he did!” They take it for granted that he existed simply because it reaffirms their faith. But to the rest of us who don't believe in a supernatural Jesus, the question of the historicity of Jesus is not simple. There are thousands of different ideas about to what extent the Jesus tales were based on a real man, or men, or woman... Did Jesus even exist, and if not, what best explains the rise of such a character in the New Testament? That is where John W. Loftus and Robert M. Price come in. Each with decades of experience in the fields of theology and Christian history, Loftus and Price have compiled essays from some of the top authorities on Jesus mythicism to establish the world's first academic catalogue of mythicist beliefs. Experts who provided chapters include David Fitzgerald, Joseph Atwill, Michael Lockwood, and more! The question is no longer simply, "Did Jesus even exist?" In this compilation, you'll find yourself questioning everything about the Christ story and how it truly began.

Download or read book Playing God written by Henry Carl Bial and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical texts have inspired more than 100 Broadway plays and musicals, ranging from early spectacles like Ben-Hur (1899) to more familiar works such as Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. What happens when a culture’s most sacred text enters its most commercial performance venue? Playing God focuses on eleven successful productions, as well as a few notable flops that highlight the difficulties in adapting the Old and New Testaments for the stage. The book is informed by both performance studies and theater history, combining analysis of play scripts with archival research into the actual circumstances of production and reception. Biblical plays, Henry Bial argues, balance religious and commercial considerations through a complex blend of spectacle, authenticity, sincerity, and irony. Though there is no magic formula for a successful adaptation, these four analytical lenses help explain why some biblical plays thrive while others have not.

Book Trains Jesus and Murder

Download or read book Trains Jesus and Murder written by Richard Beck and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Saints and sinners, all jumbled up together." That's the genius of Johnny Cash, and that's what the gospel is ultimately all about. Johnny Cash sang about and for people on the margins. He famously played concerts in prisons, where he sang both murder ballads and gospel tunes in the same set. It's this juxtaposition between light and dark, writes Richard Beck, that makes Cash one of the most authentic theologians in memory. In Trains, Jesus, and Murder, Beck explores the theology of Johnny Cash by investigating a dozen of Cash's songs. In reflecting on Cash's lyrics, and the passion with which he sang them, we gain a deeper understanding of the enduring faith of the Man in Black.
