Download or read book MG Century written by David Knowles and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate and explore 100 years of MG cars with this impressive volume featuring expert commentary, historical images, period ads, and contemporary photography. For many car enthusiasts, MG is synonymous with “sports car.” It is often credited with igniting a passion for European cars in postwar America at a time when roads were otherwise filled with the lumbering output of Detroit. In MG’s native England, the company’s cars filled roles from family transport to competition driving. MG, as we think of it today, began in the 1920s, but its roots go back even further with a young William Morris. Initially working in the booming bicycle trade, he eventually branched into motorcycle and car repair with the fledgling Morris Garage (hence, MG) in 1907. By the mid 1920s, the successful Morris Garages was in a position to begin manufacture of its own cars under the MG name. MG grew significantly in the years before World War II, building and racing its classic Midgets and Magnettes. World War II provided challenging times for the company as it did for the UK and much of the world. In the postwar period, a focus on sales outside England, and particularly in the United States, both defined MG’s product line and ensured its success. Legendary cars followed, including MG TC, TD, and TF followed by thoroughly modern MGA, MGB, MGB GT, and Midget. Magnettes and the 1100 offered options for those wanting sedans and more practical cars. MG ownership moved through a number of UK companies in the postwar period as well as ownership by BMW and today’s SAIC, a Chinese-based company through which it operates as MG Motor. Highlights along the way included the MGB GT V8, MG Metro Group B rally car, and MGF. Based on its latest state-of-the-art EV platform, MG will soon launch an all-new roadster coming full circle over its century in business. Authored by marque expert David Knowles, The MG Century: 100 Years of Safety Fast! is a fitting celebration of one of the automotive world’s oldest and most beloved brands—and a must-have for every car enthusiast.

Book excerpt: Get the behind the scenes view of arguably the most iconic automotive movie car and scene in history. Ask any automotive enthusiast what his or her favorite chase scene to appear in a movie is, and the majority will respond with "Bullitt." It has made the top 5 in every list covering the best automotive chase scenes in history. But the appeal isn’t just about the chase scene. Shot entirely on location in picturesque San Francisco in 1968, the movie not only features the historic chase scene but also many outdoor scenes filled with cars and architecture of the period that are filmed in crisp clear color. The movie was the fifth-highest-grossing film for 1968, it was well received by critics, and the chase scene won Franks P. Keller an Oscar for editing. In Bullitt: The Cars and People Behind Steve McQueen, you will get the complete behind the scenes picture of how all the action was coordinated and filmed. Included are the ideas behind the making of the movie, an interview with Director Peter Yates, production stills, and the planning for the scene. Also covered is the cast, the building of the cars used in the film, and the how and why the stunts were choreographed and filmed. To round out the story, an examination of what happened to the cars is included as well as coverage of the multiple Bullitt Edition cars released by Ford after the film, including the latest 2019 edition. While several books have been published about Steve McQueen, the "King of Cool," never before has there been a thorough examination of this specific film and these specific cars. This edition is a welcome addition to the library of any McQueen, Mustang, or automotive film history fan.

Book Cobra

    Book Details:
  • Author : Trevor Legate
  • Publisher : Motorbooks
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 0760324239
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Cobra written by Trevor Legate and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2006 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the complex saga of a sports car that was created in the early 1960s as a result of an unlikely collaboration between a plain-talking ex-racing driver from Texas and a conservative British automobile manufacturer, funded by one of the giants of the industry, the Ford Motor Company. Carroll Shelby, AC Cars, and Ford came together to create a car called the Cobra, based on the AC Ace roadster that had been in production since 1954. When the Shelby Cobra was created, it was far from state-of-the-art, but the use of a new series of Ford V8 engines saw the lightweight car annihilate the Chevrolet Corvette in American sports car racing. By adding aerodynamic bodywork, the Daytona Cobra Coupe arrived in Europe to contest the FIA World Championship and took victory in the GT category in 1965, making Shelby American the first (and only) USA-based manufacturer to achieve this feat. In order to capitalize on this success, even greater power was required and the car was developed to take a huge 7-liter engine that proved to be a triumph of horsepower over handling - thus the 427 Cobra became an overnight legend, establishing new performance records and creating a reputation for being more than a little tricky to drive. The era of the Cobra was brief - production ended at Shelby American during 1966 and at AC Cars in 1968 where they built their own final version, the AC289 Sports. Just over 1000 Cobras were built during that time but the final cars proved difficult to sell, their vintage qualities deterring potential owners. Carroll Shelby closed his company and went to Africa while AC developed other models, but the Cobra was not quite finished yet. Within a matter of a few years, a new market for the car was created as the demand for affordable kit cars grew. The most popular model by far was the Cobra and many thousands were built, with the result that both AC Cars and Carroll Shelby put their own versions back into production. And then the arguments really started... If it was an improbable car over forty years ago, it is even more implausible today, but the remarkable Cobra, in one form or another, is still with us. It may be dead, but it just won't lie down!

Book excerpt: Miles C. Collier asks: should we really let go of the vast amounts of collective knowledge that resides in automobiles? If not, how can we hold on to it? ●Archaeology isn't just about digging in grubby trenches. It is a way of thinking about the past and applying our imagination to the future. Miles C. Collier's remarkable analysis applies this thought process to cars. ●Miles C. Collier brings an archaeological point of view to the pithy matter of deciding how we understand and treat our automobiles, and how we pass this knowledge to generations to come. ●This book combines scholarship, pertinent anecdotes, style, and experience to provide a stimulating account of why we should all be archaeologists now.

Book Goodwood Remembered

Download or read book Goodwood Remembered written by Peter Redman and published by IM Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goodwood Remembered is a unique collection of previously unpublished photographs, sketches and recollections of Peter Redman, an enthusiastic spectator. As well as over 150 of his photographs from the late 1940s and 1950s, Peter Redman has included more than 50 sketches of cars and drivers of the period and 13 of his cartoons that help bring motor racing at Goodwood between 1948 and 1960 to life. The book is full of interesting snippets. Bernie Ecclestone’s second place in a 500 cc race, and World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio nursing an “off-song” Cooper-Bristol into sixth place in a Formula Libre race, are just two examples. It is a fascinating insight into the range of racing cars and drivers at Goodwood in that period: from World Champions such as Fangio, Farina and Hawthorn to handicap races for lady drivers. Goodwood Remembered will be of great interest to anyone who remembers those times and for the huge number who follow historic motor racing or want to know more of the roots of modern motor sport.
