Herrnstein and Charles Murray's incendiary bestseller, The Bell Curve. The editors have gathered together both the best of recent reviews and essays, and salient documents drawn from the curious history of this heated debate. The Bell Curve Debate captures the fervor, anger, and scope of an almost unprecedented national argument over the very idea of democracy and the possibility of a tolerant, multiracial America. It is an essential companion and answer to The Bell Curve, and provides scholarship and polemic from every point of view. It is a must-read for the informed citizen in search of all the views fit to print.

Book excerpt: Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy, authors of The Jesus Mysteries and Jesus and the Lost Goddess, return with a powerful indictment of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic fundamentalism and a passionate reinterpretation of Gnostic spirituality. According to Freke and Gandy, religiously inspired acts of violence, such as the attacks on 9/11, are nothing new. They are the continuation of a long and bloody history of brutality caused by mistaking bizarre old books for the Word of God. The time has come to end religious intolerance and wake up to oneness by rediscovering the Gnostic way of transforming oneself and the world. Freke and Gandy's Incendiary New Book Is a Wake-Up Call to the World What if the Old Testament is a work of fiction, Jesus never existed, and Muhammad was a mobster? What if the Bible and the Qur’an are works of political propaganda created by Taliban-like fundamentalists to justify the sort of religious violence we are witnessing in the world today? What if there is a big idea that could free us from the us-versus-them world created by religion and make it possible for us to truly love our neighbors—and even our enemies? What if it is possible to awaken to a profound state of oneness and love, which the Gnostic Christians symbolized by the enigmatic figure of the laughing Jesus? Discover for Yourself Why the Gnostic Jesus Laughs

This book recounts her historical view of the people, their lives and illnesses, the beauty and ferocity of the local environment and great difficulties being the sole doctor practising in all weathers and harsh conditions. Her material possessions only had value to serve the purpose for which they were intended. She devoted her life to the treatment and well being of the patient."Outpost" exposes her great sense of compassion and strength of character in pursuing her own life on her terms. Book excerpt: The Himalayas have captivated the imagination and interest of humankind for centuries. The more we explore, the more we learn. India's rich history, society, and culture, are deeply influenced by the world's tallest mountain range. After all, before modern travel, the Himalayas were the most important gateway to India, for people, goods and ideas. This rare and invaluable record of the youngest mountain range in the world is back in print after a century. The extensively detailed information on every district, food habits, customs, influences, as well as the people and their vocations will provide a new perspective to a whole new generation of young readers. The aim of this publication is to make Atkinson's rich data accessible once again to researchers so that we can continue to refer to this rich source of information in our continued work to conserve the rich natural resources and ecological heritage of the Himalayas which stand frighteningly threatened by fast paced and largely unplanned development.
