Triumphant.” - The New York Times When Ruth Sterling was a teenager, she slipped away one night, desperate to escape an abusive home and a troubling boyfriend. Pregnant, alone, and prepared to do anything to survive, she eventually makes a life for herself—and soon, for her newborn daughter Catherine. For more than twenty years, Ruth has lived quietly and has provided for her daughter. But she is always ready to run at a moment’s notice, and never allows either of them to put down roots too deeply. Now, Catherine is grown and craves a life for herself. This is something her mother will do anything to prevent—but for what reasons? It has always been just the two of them against the world. But how well do they really know each other? When Ruth’s deeply held quest to keep Catherine by her side reveals cracks in her carefully constructed world, both mother and daughter begin a dance of deception. They both have secrets. But which one of them carries the real darkness inside? Propulsive, brilliantly layered, and a true shocker, Gone Tonight is an emotionally thrilling powerhouse of a novel about the things we do for love, and what we’re capable of when pushed to the limit.

Download or read book Three Shattered Souls written by James Wilde and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes fathers should not be awarded custody of their own children. Especially, when there's an ulterior motive. "Three Shattered Souls" is a memoir of how a father gained custody of his three young children and tricked his new wife into raising them. She outwardly rejected his kids, putting them through cruel mental and physical anguish for years. This is a gripping account of the abuse they were forced to endure under the brutal hands of their stepmother. Sometimes it's better for children to live with their unfit birth mother. Especially, if this book exemplifies the alternative.
Download or read book Tandem Lives written by Henrietta Baker Embree and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mythology of the frontier Texas woman portrays her as fiercely independent, strong willed, and adventurous. This eye-opening book, however, offers a far more complex and intimate version of women's cultural experiences in mid-nineteenth-century Texas by publishing, for the first time, the diaries of Henrietta Baker Embree and Tennessee Keys Embree. Henrietta and Tennessee were the sequential wives of Dr. John W. Embree of Belton, Texas, a physician, slaveholder, farmer, merchant, and man of mercurial temperament. Their diaries reveal the social and personal challenges women experienced in a region beset first by the Civil War and then by Reconstruction and offer insights into the two women's struggles to survive as battered wives in a society that offered little support-and less chance of escape-for women bound by nineteenth-century ideas about gender roles. In the preface and other editorial matter that accompany the two diaries, Amy L. Wink draws on extensive primary research to fill in the blanks of Henrietta's and Tennessee's lives and place them in historical context. The diaries themselves richly illuminate how these women coped with such issues as domestic violence, childrearing, faith, frailty, and mortality. Most significantly, they show how Henrietta and Tennessee-and, by extension, countless other women like them-used their writing to construct their sense of personal identity and thereby to empower themselves in the face of debilitating external forces. An important contribution to the fields of history, women's studies, psychology, and literature, Tandem Lives reveals anew the rich insights offered by the autobiographical writings of ordinary women. Amy L. Wink, PhD is an adjunct professor at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas and also works with clients as a writing coach and mentor. She is the author of She Left Nothing In Particular: The Autobiographical Legacy of Nineteenth-Century Women's Diaries and has written for InsideHigherEd.com and other publications. Download or read book Ku Klux Klan Sheet Music written by Danny O. Crew and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ku Klux Klan has received much attention for its violent activities, but comparatively little research has been done on its musical legacy. The printed music that still exists is spread throughout the nation in both public and private collections. This work presents, chronologically, the music associated with the Klan from 1867 to 2002, thus enabling readers to sense the arguments and attitudes of the Klan as they developed and changed over time. Because of the relative scarcity of Klan-related music, non-Klan music that mentions the word "Klan" is included. These obscure references help place the Klan in a larger social perspective and are very important in documenting anti-Klan musical reaction. In instances where a song merely mentions the Klan, usually in only one verse or in the chorus, then only that verse containing the Klan reference, plus appropriate context, is included. The catalogue also includes Klan-related music that does not have lyrics, such as marches, waltzes, two-steps, and several Klan-related pieces that were published in Europe. Sheet music was virtually nonexistent after the 1930s, so in order to capture a feeling of Klan-related music today, a limited discography of Klan-related recordings from 1920 to 2002 is also included.
