Not only does it expose the hardships of this pioneering life, but also the mistreatment of animals and people that was accepted as necessary and unavoidable. It also shows that in terms of greed and corruption, nothing much has changed.
Download or read book Klondike written by Pierre Berton and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the building of the railroad and the settlement of the plains, the North West was opening up. The Klondike stampede was a wild interlude in the epic story of western development, and here are its dramatic tales of hardship, heroism, and villainy. We meet Soapy Smith, dictator of Skagway; Swiftwater Bill Gates, who bathed in champagne; Silent Sam Bonnifield, who lost and won back a hotel in a poker game; and Roddy Connors, who danced away a fortune at a dollar a dance. We meet dance-hall queens, paupers turned millionaires, missionaries and entrepreneurs, and legendary Mounties such as Sam Steele, the Lion of the Yukon. Pierre Berton's riveting account reveals to us the spectacle of the Chilkoot Pass, and the terrors of lesser-known trails through the swamps of British Columbia, across the glaciers of souther Alaska, and up the icy streams of the Mackenzie Mountains. It contrasts the lawless frontier life on the American side of the border to the relative safety of Dawson City. Winner of the Governor General's award for non-fiction, Klondike is authentic history and grand entertainment, and a must-read for anyone interested in the Canadian frontier.

Book excerpt: This encyclopedia provides detailed information about the historical, cultural, social, religious, economic, and scientific significance of gold, across the globe and throughout history. Gold has been an intrinsic part of human culture and society throughout the world, both in ancient times and in the modern era. This precious metal has also played a central role in economics and politics throughout history. In fact, the value of gold remains a topic of debate amid the current upheavals of economic conditions and attendant reevaluations of modern financial principles. Gold: A Cultural Encyclopedia consists of more than 130 entries that encompass every aspect of gold, ranging from the ancient metallurgical arts to contemporary economies. The connections between these interdisciplinary subjects are explored and analyzed to highlight the many ways humankind's fascination with gold reflects historical, cultural, economic, and geographic developments. While the majority of the works related to gold focus on economic theory, this text goes beyond that to take a more sociocultural approach to the subject.

But times are tough and getting worse. The possibility of discovering riches, however slim, is hard to resist. The trip from Seattle to the Yukon is torturous and filled with dangers. Blinding snowstorms, a hazardous mountain range and raging rapids stand between the prospectors and their chance to hit "paydirt." And of the 30 000 who do make it all the way to Dawson, only a small percentage will ever strike gold. Even so, Roy is determined to come back a rich man. And Tim, a budding writer, is looking to find the story of a lifetime. Their year in the gold fields is filled with exhausting travel, backbreaking work and bitter feuding. As the two brothers face increasing tensions and hardships, even all the gold in the world may not be enough to save their family. Book jacket.
Download or read book The Klondike Fever written by Pierre Berton and published by Martino Fine Books. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2010 Reprint of 1958 edition. This thrilling story of the Klondike Gold Rush is at once first-rate history and first-rate entertainment. Some of the anecdotes of the last great gold rush have been told by others, but Pierre Berton is the first to distill the Klondike experience into a single, complete, coherent and immensely dramatic narrative. He spent 12 years in Dawson City researching the work. The entire tale has an epic ring, as much because of its splendid folly as because of its color and motion. The full story has never been told before, nor has it been told in this dramatic way.

Download or read book The Gold Crusades written by Douglas Fetherling and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-12-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the hordes of starry-eyed 'argonauts' who flocked to the California gold rush of 1849 was an Australian named Edward Hargraves. He left America empty-handed, only to find gold in his own backyard. The result was the great Australian rush of the 1850s, which also attracted participants from around the world. A South African named P.J. Marais was one of them. Marais too returned home in defeat – only to set in motion the diamond and gold rushes that transformed southern Africa. And so it went. Most previous historians of the gold rushes have tended to view them as acts of spontaneous nationalism. Each country likes to see its own gold rush as the one that either shaped those that followed or epitomized all the rest. In The Gold Crusades: A Social History of Gold Rushes, 1849-1929, Douglas Fetherling takes a different approach. Fetherling argues that the gold rushes in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa shared the same causes and results, the same characters and characteristics. He posits that they were in fact a single discontinuous event, an expression of the British imperial experience and nineteenth-century liberalism. He does so with dash and style and with a sharp eye for the telling anecdote, the out-of-the-way document, and the bold connection between seemingly unrelated disciplines. Originally published by Macmillan of Canada, 1988.

As you'll likely be competing with other prospectors, knowledge will give you the edge, and Gold Panner's Manual goes through all the necessary (and fascinating) background on gold's formation to support your understanding of the likeliest places nuggets or flakes will have surfaced or settled. Basque describes the ins and outs of the equipment you need, the tell-tale signs of gold and how to stake a claim. Find out how to spot a placer site and size up a valley for the best spot to start panning. First printed in 1974, Gold Panner's Manual remains a strong seller.
