Book Chinese Migrants Abroad Cultural Educational And Social Dimensions Of The Chinese Diaspora

Download or read book Chinese Migrants Abroad Cultural Educational And Social Dimensions Of The Chinese Diaspora written by Michael W Charney and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast-paced economic growth in Southeast Asia from the late 1960s until the mid-1990s brought increased attention to the overseas Chinese as an economically successful diaspora and their role in this economic growth. Events that followed, such as the transfer of Hong Kong and Macau to the People's Republic of China, the election of a non-KMT government in Taiwan, the Asian economic crisis and the plight of overseas Chinese in Indonesia as a result, and the durability of the Singapore economy during this same crisis, have helped to sustain this attention. The study of the overseas Chinese has by now become a global enterprise, raising new theoretical problems and empirical challenges. New case studies of overseas Chinese, such as those on communities in North America, Cuba, India, and South Africa, continually unveil different perspectives. New kinds of transnational connectivities linking Chinese communities are also being identified. It is now possible to make broader generalizations of a Chinese diaspora, on a global basis. Further, the intensifying study of the overseas Chinese has stimulated renewed intellectual vigor in other areas of research. The transnational and transregional activities of overseas Chinese, for example, pose serious challenges to analytical concepts of regional divides such as that between East and Southeast Asia.Despite the increased attention, new data, and the changing theoretical paradigms, basic questions concerning the overseas Chinese remain. The papers in this volume seek to understand the overseas Chinese migrants not just in terms of the overall Chinese diaspora per se, but also local Chinese migrants adapting to local societies, in different national contexts.

Book Getting By

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald M. Nonini
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2015-08-11
  • ISBN : 0801456215
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Getting By written by Donald M. Nonini and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do class, ethnicity, gender, and politics interact? In what ways do they constitute everyday life among ethnic minorities? In "Getting By," Donald M. Nonini draws on three decades of research in the region of Penang state in northern West Malaysia, mainly in the city of Bukit Mertajam, to provide an ethnographic and historical account of the cultural politics of class conflict and state formation among Malaysians of Chinese descent. Countering triumphalist accounts of the capitalist Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, Nonini shows that the Chinese of Penang (as elsewhere) are riven by deep class divisions and that class issues and identities are omnipresent in everyday life. Nor are the common features of "Chinese culture" in Malaysia manifestations of some unchanging cultural essence. Rather, his long immersion in the city shows, they are the results of an interaction between Chinese-Malaysian practices in daily life and the processes of state formation—in particular, the ways in which Kuala Lumpur has defined different categories of citizens. Nonini's ethnography is based on semistructured interviews; participant observation of events, informal gatherings, and meetings; a commercial census; intensive reading of Chinese-language and English-language newspapers; the study of local Chinese-language sources; contemporary government archives; and numerous exchanges with residents.

Book Moving Forward on God s Highway

Download or read book Moving Forward on God s Highway written by Willenham Castilla and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the grace of God and His singular purpose for everyone's life. Using his life as an example, the author signals how we are born into certain families, have certain unique talents, have various life experiences, learn important life lessons, get off track and have to be bounced around a bit, and perhaps have to hit a horrible bottom before we surrender to this ordained purpose from our Creator. The book is colorful, fast moving, and covers a multitude of areas including alcoholism, the 12 step program, psychology and the field of mental health, theology, New Age journeys, custody battles, male-female relations, many travel and adventure experiences, and various other topics as sampled by the author. Mostly, the book is about the futility of our personal resources in serving our God ordained purpose without a surrender to this power greater than ourselves and the grace that follows.
