Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now at least 250,000 strong, the Dutch in greater Chicago have lived for 150 years "below the radar screens" of historians and the general public. Here their story is told for the first time. In Dutch Chicago Robert Swierenga offers a colorful, comprehensive history of the Dutch Americans who have made their home in the Windy City since the mid-1800s. The original Chicago Dutch were a polyglot lot from all social strata, regions, and religions of the Netherlands. Three-quarters were Calvinists; the rest included Catholics, Lutherans, Unitarians, Socialists, Jews, and the nominally churched. Whereas these latter Dutch groups assimilated into the American culture around them, the Dutch Reformed settled into a few distinct enclaves -- the Old West Side, Englewood, and Roseland and South Holland -- where they stuck together, building an institutional infrastructure of churches, schools, societies, and shops that enabled them to live from cradle to grave within their own communities. Focusing largely but not exclusively on the Reformed group of Dutch folks in Chicago, Swierenga recounts how their strong entrepreneurial spirit and isolationist streak played out over time. Mostly of rural origins in the northern Netherlands, these Hollanders in Chicago liked to work with horses and go into business for themselves. Picking up ashes and garbage, jobs that Americans despised, spelled opportunity for the Dutch, and they came to monopolize the garbage industry. Their independence in business reflected the privacy they craved in their religious and educational life. Church services held in the Dutch language kept outsiders at bay, as did a comprehensive system of private elementary and secondary schools intended to inculcate youngsters with the Dutch Reformed theological and cultural heritage. Not until the world wars did the forces of Americanization finally break down the walls, and the Dutch passed into the mainstream. Only in their churches today, now entirely English speaking, does the Dutch cultural memory still linger. Dutch Chicago is the first serious work on its subject, and it promises to be the definitive history. Swierenga's lively narrative, replete with historical detail and anecdotes, is accompanied by more than 250 photographs and illustrations. Valuable appendixes list Dutch-owned garbage and cartage companies in greater Chicago since 1880 as well as Reformed churches and schools. This book will be enjoyed by readers with Dutch roots as well as by anyone interested in America's rich ethnic diversity.

Book History and Legacy of the Suffragette Fellowship

Download or read book History and Legacy of the Suffragette Fellowship written by Eileen Luscombe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History and Legacy of the Suffragette Fellowship provides a biographical account of the scope and depth of the memory work of the now-forgotten commemorative group the Suffragette Fellowship, active from the 1920s to the 1970s. The Suffragette Fellowship comprised members from the militant suffrage groups known as the Women’s Social and Political Union, the Women’s Freedom League, and the Actress Franchise League. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the Fellowship’s attempts to form and sustain a collective Suffragette identity across four decades of activity. It considers the legacy of contested histories attached to militant campaigning that pressured Fellowship leaders to take control of the public memory of suffrage history. With close attention given to a neglected piece of feminist history, this book highlights the cultural and political impacts that the Fellowship enacted in their memory of the women’s suffrage movement. Richly illustrated with images of members, artefacts, and publications, this extensive study of the Suffragette Fellowship adds to transnational suffrage histories in the United Kingdom and Australia and will be of interest to scholars in memory studies and women’s history.

Book Jewish Community of Syracuse

Download or read book Jewish Community of Syracuse written by Barbara Sheklin Davis and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While New York City became home for most of the Jewish immigrants who crossed the Atlantic, others journeyed farther, seeking freedom and fortune. The city of Syracuse, easily reached by the Erie Canal, became the next port of call for some. It offered opportunities, open roads, and a small but ever-growing Jewish community. This history traces the development of the Jewish community of the Salt City from its beginnings in the early 18th century, when a handful of peddlers gathered weekly to share a Shabbat meal, to a much larger community that numbered 11,000-12,000 at its peak a century later. The Syracuse Jewish community is a microcosm of the history of Jews in America and is both distinctive and iconic in nature.

Book Tribute to a Common Man

Download or read book Tribute to a Common Man written by C. Steven Roaf and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-04-08 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it truly possible for a man to live an entire life and then leave this earthly existence with no mark? The story of the purposeful life of a common man begins with an unwed mother in Victorian-era New England and her illegitimate son. This boy of humble beginnings eventually grew to be a manneither famous nor wealthybut one who left a lasting legacy that still inspires others today, even some twenty-five years after his death. C. Steven Roaf s grandfather could be gruff or comicaloccasionally possessing the anger of a raging bull and often relying on an impish smile to reveal his mischievous intentions. Like many others who have lived unnoticed by much of the world, Chester Warren Roaf unknowingly influenced his grandson as a second father, companion, and hero. Beginning with his genealogy and continuing with anecdotes, Roaf offers a glimpse into the valuable life lessons that still ring true while exploring traditional values seemingly rare in todays society. Tribute to a Common Man not only shares the inspiration behind a touching bond between a grandfather and grandson, but also serves as a memorial to a life more full of love than fame.
