Download or read book Gold Prices and Wages Routledge Revivals written by J. A. Hobson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-02 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1913, this Routledge Revivals title reissues J. A. Hobson’s seminal analysis of the causal link between the rise in gold prices and the increase in wages and consumer buying power in the early years of the Twentieth Century. Contrary to the assertions of some notable contemporary economists and businessmen, Hobson contended that the relationship between gold prices and wages (and the resulting social unrest across much of Europe) was in fact much more complex than it initially appeared and that there were significantly more important factors in the rise of contemporary wealth, such as the rapid enlargement of state enterprise and joint stock companies; a wide extension of banking and general financial apparatus; and the opening of profitable fields of investment for the development of underdeveloped countries, which helped raise the rate of interest and profits.
Download or read book J A Hobson written by Michael Schneider and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic theories of the English economist and social scientist J.A. Hobson (1858-1940) were pioneering for their time. This book critically analyses his theories and shows that many of them have contemporary relevance. Hobson is best known by today's economists for his underconsumption theory, which was recognised by Keynes as an important forerunner of The General Theory. Hobson's underconsumption theory is modelled and compared with the economic growth theories of Harrod and Domar. Also included are accounts of Hobson's theories in the areas of welfare economics, income distribution and prices, money and credit, and international economics. The book also outlines Hobson's theory of imperialism, which was addressed to an audience far wider than that of economists, and gained him international fame.

Book excerpt: John Atkinson Hobson (1858 - 1940) was an English social scientist and economist most famous for his work on imperialism-which notably had an influence on Vladimir Lenin-as well as his theory of underconsumption. His early work also questioned the classical theory of rent and predicted the Neoclassical "marginal productivity" theory of distribution. First published in 1913, Hobson's treatise "Gold, Prices and Wages" is a fascinating exploration of economics that examines the role of gold and its relationship the contemporary rising price of commodities. Contents include: "The Rise of Prices", "The Price Problem. Quantity of Money", "Fold and Prices", "The Basis of Credit", "Retardation of the Supply of Goods", "The Distribution of Wealth", and "The Theory of Money and Prices". Download or read book Classical Theories of Money Output and Inflation written by Roy Green and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the conventional view that monetarism is a necessary part of classical economics and shows, in an historical account of monetary controversy, that the framework upon which classical analysis is based suggests an alternative account of the inflationary process. A corollary of the argument is that the monetarist approach is a logically necessary component of neoclassical analysis and that any attempt to criticise that approach in a fundamental way must involve an explicit rejection of the conceptual structure of neoclassical economics.
