Book excerpt: The material incorporated in this study was originally meant to be presented to Columbia University in fulfilment of the last requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. As the work progressed, however, and by the time the first painful fifty pages had been put on paper and tom up again, I became more and more aware that I had emerged out of the initial period of reading and study with convictions and aspirations which it would be difficult tot clothe in the sober garments of modesty and reserve rightly prescribed for a University thesis. Soon after the last words of the manuscript were written (March 1934) it furthermore became clear that owing to the pressure of other work, presentation in thesis form would mean indefinite delay, delay which would almost certainly render a complete revision inevitable. These considerations have led me to the decision to send out my brazen unkempt first-born under his own flag, to meet what ever fate he deserves. In so doing I have one great regret. Time, that relentless foe of the writer on current events, has not allowed me to weave into the text all of the wise and helpful suggestions which my academical sponsor, Professor H. Parker Willis, with his generous understanding of a young writer's problems and ambitions, has so kindly offered. Had I been able to do so, this little book would have presented a far more polished aspect.

Yet, while it is extraordinarily important and widespread, the golden rule is often dismissed by scholars as a vague proverb that quickly leads to absurdities when one attempts to formulate it in clear terms. In this book, Harry J. Gensler defends the golden rule and addresses all of the major philosophic objections, pointing out several common misunderstanding and misapplications. Gensler first discusses golden-rule reasoning and how to avoid the main pitfalls. He then relates the golden rule to world religions and history, and to areas like moral education, egoism, evolution, society, racism, business, and medicine. The book ends with a discussion of theoretical issues (like whether all morality reduces to the golden rule, which the author argues against). Ethics and the Golden Rule offers two introductory chapters, the first is simpler and the second more technical; a reader may start with either or both. One can then read any combination of further chapters, in any order, depending on one's interests; but Chapters 13 and 14 are technical and assume one has read Chapter 2. This is "a golden-rule book for everyone," accessible to a wide readership.

This volume explores the resources of this rich philosophical tradition. Thirteen original essays, framed by the editors' introduction, critically examine the four core theses of moral rationalism: (i) the psychological thesis that reason is the source of moral judgment, (ii) the metaphysical thesis that moral requirements are constituted by the deliverances of practical reason, (iii) the epistemological thesis that moral requirements are knowable a priori, and (iv) the normative thesis that moral requirements entail valid reasons for action. The five essays in Part I ('Normativity') offer contemporary defences or reconstructions of Kant's attempt to ground the normative thesis, that moral requirements entail valid reasons for action, in the nature of practical reason and practical rationality. The four essays in Part II ('Epistemology & Meaning') consider the viability of claims to a priori moral knowledge. The authors of all four essays are sympathetic to a realist moral metaphysics, and thus forgo the straightforward constructivist road to apriority. The four essays in Part III ('Psychology') each grapple with the implications for rationalism of the role of emotions and unconscious processes in moral judgement and action. Together the essays demonstrate that moral rationalism identifies not a single philosophical position but rather a family of philosophical positions, which resemble traditional rationalism, as exemplified by Kant, to varying degrees.
