Book Consolidated Gold Fields in Australia

Download or read book Consolidated Gold Fields in Australia written by Robert Porter and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consolidated Gold Fields was a major British mining house founded by Cecil Rhodes in 1892. Diversifying from its South African gold interests, the company invested widely during the following century. This included investments in the Western Australian gold sector from the 1920s and exploration and mining activities elsewhere in Australia and the Territory of New Guinea. In the 1960s, Consolidated Gold Fields Australia (CGFA) was formed. CGFA had ambitious plans and the financial backing from London to establish itself as one of the main diversified mining companies in Australia. Investments were held in the historic Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, in Renison, and it was one of the first groups to develop iron ore deposits in the Pilbara of Western Australia. It also acquired a major interest in mineral sands. While the London-based Consolidated Gold Fields ceased to exist in 1989, taken over and dismembered by renowned corporate raider Hanson Plc, its Australian subsidiary, renamed Renison Goldfields Consolidated (RGC), continued for another nine years as a diversified mining group before it suffered its own corporate demise, facilitated by Hanson. CGFA and RGC were important participants in Australia¿s post¿World War?II mining sector. This book is a history of a once great British mining-finance house and its investments in Australia. Consolidated Gold Fields had a rich and broad history in Australia; its ultimate fate did not demonstrate its potential as an Australian mining company.

Book excerpt: "Shortly after the turn of the century discoveries by a Shoshone prospector in the barren central Nevada deserts ignited the last great goldrush on the Western mining frontier. Prospectors, miners, stock promoters, gamblers, camp followers, roughs, lawmen, and anarchists, among others, converged upon this unlikely plot of sand and joshua trees from every corner of the earth. The saga that ensued is first-rate. It tells the story of ordinary people - their everyday lives, hopes, loves, and dilemmas - as well as the fates of the newly crowned nabobs, who could wager a fortune on the turn of a roulette wheel." ""Hell-roaring Goldfield" passed through the same stages of boom, industrialization, and decline as its mining-camp predecessors, but with some significant differences. Greed knew no bounds, waves of epidemic disease and violent death swept the city, mining stock speculation reached new heights, and the tycoon who rose to the top - the ruthless ex-gambler George Wingfield - dominated Nevada for years to come. In other ways as well, the last boomtown cast a long shadow over the future. Goldfield played a key role in the nineteenth-century mining boom that reversed twenty years of depression and decline in a severely depopulated state and assured the triumph of mining camp ideology over other value systems. Along with its careless bravado, that ideology meant unfettered individualism and the primacy of materialism over moral values. It meant a restless search for excitement in the saloons, forerunners of today's casinos and second only to the mines in economic importance. Above all, it meant getting rich and getting out, leaving others to pay the price."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book The Lena Goldfields Massacre and the Crisis of the Late Tsarist State

Download or read book The Lena Goldfields Massacre and the Crisis of the Late Tsarist State written by Michael Melancon and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912 a thin line of Russian soldiers, confronted by a large crowd of gold miners on strike for several weeks, reacted with fear and anger. At their officers’ orders, they opened fire, shooting five hundred unarmed protestors. The event reverberated across Russia. The Lena goldfields massacre can be viewed from several distinct viewpoints, each presenting a contrasting story. Author Michael Melancon avoids prematurely picking a “right” way of looking at the massacre. Instead, he explores all aspects of the incident, from the despair of the miners at the poor conditions they faced, to the calculations and priorities of the mining entrepreneurs and state officials, and even the rationale of the soldiers who pulled the triggers. The Lena Goldfields Massacre and the Crisis of the Late Tsarist State will appeal to anyone interested in labor relations, in revolutionary movements, and in transitions associated with modernization. Its comparative framework will be helpful for generalists and Europeanists. It will also provide food for thought for those who seek a carefully researched examination of Russian society during the early twentieth century.
